Description

Mitutoyo 500-195-30 Advanced Onsite Sensor Absolute Scale Digital Caliper, 0-4" Range, Stainless Steel The Mitutoyo ABSOLUTE 500 series caliper with exclusive AOS sensor technology is a Digimatic caliper that is made of durable hardened stainless steel and uses Mitutoyo’s ABSOLUTE linear encoder technology, which allows you to “set and forget” the origin and measure in awkward or difficult locations. This series also utilizes the patented Advanced Onsite Sensor (AOS) offering improved measurement dependability by increasing resistance to harsh workshop conditions. The New electromagnetic inductive (AOS) sensor has improved resistance to environmental conditions such as dirt, oil and water that can cause false readings. This new feature will improve quality control and productivity in your workplace. This digital caliper has LCD readout and function control buttons on the caliper face, including Origin to set and retain the original measuring point, and Zero/ABS (Absolute Scale) to zero-set the LCD display. It uses the metric measuring system. Although identical to dial and vernier calipers in its ability to make precise measurements, the digital caliper also has an LCD, which clearly shows values and increases reading reliability over the other types, and reflects all ABSOLUTE system activities. The Absolute Scale (ABS) function tracks the origin point you set, even after shutoff. Once on again, the caliper can immediately start measuring, without zero resetting or concern of over speed errors. The LCD can be "zeroed out" before making and comparing incremental measurements without having to subtract the first measurement from the second. The calipers use the ABSOLUTE electrostatic capacitance linear encoder which helps prevent over speed errors. They measure outer diameter (OD), inner diameter (ID), depth, and step, where the butt end of the fixed jaw measures one end of a work piece before its upper/lower or inner/outer "steps" are measured. LCD Resolution is 0.01mm. Also included are origin-setting, zero- setting, and on/off automatic shutoff function buttons. A Digital LCD Data Reading Hold function is available with the optional Data Hold Unit (sold separately). An alarm alerts the user to low voltage and scale contamination and counting value composition errors. A rolling thumb wheel makes fine adjustments and a thumb screw locks the scale’s position. Response speed is unlimited. Each caliper includes, and is powered by, one SR44 silver oxide cell battery that lasts approximately 3.5 years with continuous normal use. Calipers measure the distance between two opposing sides of an object. They make inside, outside, depth, or step measurements, according to their type. Calipers are commonly used in architecture, metalworking, mechanical engineering, and machining. The simplest calipers have two legs to mark the two points and require a ruler to take the measurement. More complex calipers use two sets of jaws instead of legs and have up to two graduated scales. Vernier, dial, and digital calipers give direct and accurate readings and are functionally identical, having a calibrated scale with a fixed jaw, and another jaw with a movable pointer that slides along the scale. The vernier caliper has a scale sliding parallel to the main scale for an additional, fractional reading to improve measurement precision. The dial caliper has a circular dial with a pointer on a toothed gear rack replacing the second vernier scale. As with the vernier, this second measurement is added to the reading from the main scale to obtain the result. The digital caliper takes a differential by zeroing the display at any point along the slide, with an LCD that displays a single value in English and/or metric units. Mitutoyo manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology equipment, and systems. The company was founded in Tokyo in 1934 and formed Mitutoyo America Corporation in 1963, which is headquartered in Aurora, IL. • Mitutoyo makes quality goods.....and good tools always pay for the professional
Style: 500-195-30 Digital
Photo is of my newest Mitutoyo 4" caliper next to my "old" 6" dial caliper--both in front of my 1934 built Gerstner machinest's chest. I purchased the 6" dial Mitutoyo caliper in 1983 in order to take a few machine shop classes at the local vocational school. I was also working with many engines and decided I just had to have a dial caliper. For almost 40 years that caliper has been my go to measuring tool in the machine shop and on an engine bench. Additionally, it has been a constant travel companion always in my briefcase and logging more than 1.5 million air miles. Recently I have been doing more work with my small machine tools (Sherline Mill, Taig Lathe, Grizzly Micro Lathe). I figured it was time to have a caliper both in the travel bag and near the machine tools. After 4 decades of use, I had no reason to select anything other than another Mitutoyo. There are lots of cheaper items (usually China sourced) and some more expensive (Starrett "real" product). But Mitutoyo still offers a quality (this one is Japan built) product at a reasonable price. Plus, I expected that the fit, feel, finish and accuracy would be on par with the 6" inch. I could not find a 4" dial and as a crusty old guy was reluctant to go digital. But, I finally decided to pull the trigger on this one. Thoughts" Unit is smooooootttttthhh. Just like it had been used for years and kept well adjusted and oil. Not loose, no burrs ro tight spots just that right feel and smoothness. If you use a measuring tool a lot, you just have the expectation of that feel to help ensure your accuracy is spot on. This on is, out of the box on par with any I have used. It is balanced better than I expected. I wanted a 4" due to the tight spaces and small stuff I encounter with my tiny machine tools. I was however, concerned that it would not "lay in the hand" like the 6". The materials and weight make that a non-issue. I was making some flats on motor armature shafts yesterday and the 4" was perfect for my feel and use. The digital calibration, brightness of LCD, ease of changing battery are all appropriate. In fact I found no dislikes in the form fit or function. I could do without the yellow stripe, but that is just an opinion rather than a function item. Accuracy was spot on as I measured a few test blocks. Comparing measurements of my armatures with both indicators yielded less than .001" difference. The readout was instantaneous and stable. I was a bit surprised at how quickly I adjusted to just reading rather than counting on the dial. In short I am pleased with the purchase. I was prepared to not like the length (balance) and feel and be aggravated by the digital readout. In turn, those are the best part of the unit. Now if the digital holds up like the dial, I (or my heirs) will be using this 50 years from now. Great feathers---great feel---perfect for application---long life. Those are the reasons a pro buys quality. A note on the photo. I purchased the Gerstner chest at an auction. A small rock quarry was being sold after the owner's death. His machine shop was amazing. All line-shaft driven tools in well used, but immaculate condition. Saddly, most were bought by scrappers. I bought the chest that still had a few tools in it. A few years later, I had Gerstner do new felt, chrome work and leatherette at their plant in Dayton, O. I left the wood as is. They dated it (numbers and marks on drawer bottoms) as 1934 production. Proud to say it has been used as a working chest ever since..first with the rock quarry and then with me. Not many years until it will have been in use 100 years, further proof that quality tools well used will pay. Knowing this chest now holds a "state of the art" digital caliper as it nears 100 years of service makes me feel more of a "steward" rather than "owner". Perhaps not part of the review, this does reflect my view of a life-time of working to build and use skills while appreciated what good tools can me. ... show more

  • Genuine. However shipped to me in an envelope!

Genuine. However shipped to me in an envelope! It arrived undamaged, and passed recalibration. Amazon, your packaging is no way to handle a costly precision instrument. My immediate need precluded return, but if happens on my next mitutoyo order, back it goes.

  • Get the 6-inch Model, Not the 4-inch
Style: 500-195-30 Digital
I saw that Mitutoyo offered this 4-inch caliper. Great! I only measure a couple of inches or less, right? This will be perfect, and more compact. And this Mitutoyo simply has to be more accurate and consistent than the digital calipers I get at the local Chinese tool importer for $19. I wasn't wrong: the Mitutoyo is a thing of beauty. However, picking up the 4-in model, opening its jaws to two inches and holding it, one realizes the bar at the end now digs into the heel of my hand. And believe me, the edges are machined perfectly square. Sharp, actually. The 6-inch model would hang off my hand. The 4-inch model is, ouch. But I'll survive. What I like about this Mitutoya is that it never forgets where it is. I always get the feeling with cheap digital calipers that I need to re-zero them every time or the reading will be off. Not so with this Mitutoyo. (I actually went back to analog dial calipers simply because they are consistent.) There is a reason most vernier calipers open to 6 inches, however: that length is just right for holding in your hand for most measurements. Nonetheless, this Mitutoya -- even the 4-inch model -- is wonderful. Reads to four places. ... show more

The caliper is genuine Mitutoyo. Smooth, well machined, accurate. Serial number is matching the one on the inspection certificate. SR44 battery included. Only complain is the gigantic 6" case (and the outer package says Dial Caliper) I got the item delivered to Poland, EU in 9 working days from the US.
