I got this hat to keep the sun off the back of my neck. It works great for that. It is plenty long in back. It also keeps me cool, especially if a breeze is blowing. I haven't gotten it wet yet to test that feature. But, I was amazed at how much cooler and comfortable this hat made me feel as compared to my regular ball cap. It does stay on my head, even though I feel like the flying nun because the brim picks up the wind, too. It also does a great job of keeping the sun out of my eyes. I like that I can take it off, and let it hang from my neck by its cord. It washes great in the washer in a garment bag, and I hang it to dry. Love that it has not been treated with chemicals. This is a great hat, but, like so many things these days, I feel it is overpriced. ... show more

This hat offers great protection from the harmful rays of the sun. The fit is slightly loose but doesn’t hinder anything and the cape in the back protects your ears and neck. The tan color doesn’t heat up quickly and sweat is trapped easily on the sweat band. Great for outside yard work or hiking. The material does make blood difficult to remove. ... show more

After working in the sun for 4 hours, I realized that I needed more than just a baseball cap for protection. After a quick search, I quickly decided on this sun hat by Mission. I’ve had other cooling products by them in the past and they worked perfectly. This hat works as advertised, cooling, comfortable and keeps the sun off your neck and face. Excellent for working in the garden or wearing to an outdoor sporting event. Wet it, squeeze the excess water out, put it on and feel cool and comfortable. I will warn you, use the neck strap in windy conditions because while the back flap and large brim protect from the sun? It can also catch the wind and take off like the Flying Nun. I do a lot of backcountry camping. This style of hat with the flappy back is great because it doesn't run into the backpack. My go-to hat is Sunday Afternoons Ultra Adventure Storm Hat and I bought this one to try a cheaper alternative on a recent canoeing trip. Upsides: very comfortable on my big head, the brim is an inch deeper than Storm hat, and the back flap has more coverage and doesn't inflate in wind. The brim is also stiffer and doesn't flip up in a heavy wind like the Storm Hat. Downsides (relative to the Storm Hat): It's heavier and warmer. Collects more heat. It doesn't dry nearly as fast as the storm hat. That one is mostly nylon with plastic in the bill. This feels more like cloth. The brim doesn't bend, so I can't really flatten the hat in half without distorting it. Doesn't pack as well. The flap in the back feels like a tongue. It also tends to catch on my shirt when I turn my head, so I'm constantly readjusting it. The inner forehead liner tends to flip down when you pull the hat off, so you need to reposition when you put it back on. This was a fun experiment, but I'm relegating it to gardening. The Storm Hat is stupidly expensive for a hat and there are probably some Amazon alternatives that'll get you most of the way there. This one, I think, is better for casual use. This is a great hat for working outside! Simply wet it with water and/or place it in the refrigerator or in ice for a few minutes, wring out, and wear it! You can re-wet it as you continue to work. The hat cools you as the water evaporates and the hat dries out. A wide brim and flap over the back of the neck keep you from sunburn and also keeps you cool by providing ample shade over exposed body parts. We can do yardwork in 100+ degree weather and stay fairly cool while it's wet! Is it windy where you are? An adjustable chin strap allows you to keep it on your head no matter how strong the breeze. Lightweight nylon-like material with a thicker headband that can hold water. Great for yardwork, hiking in the heat or at the beach! ... show more

Mission Cool products are awesome. This hat protects me from the sun better than any hat I have owned. Wide, stiff brim that doesn't sag when you get the hat wet. The brim does not absorb water. When you get hot, get it wet and it keeps you cool for about an hour. I also have the Boonie hat which stays damp longer and is cooler and stays cooler longer. I have used the Boonie in 90 degrees plus weather walking a golf course and it makes it way more comfortable. The brim doesn't stay stiff when wet but stiff enough to keep the sun off. But the brim absorbs water and when you get hot you can pull the brim down over your eyes and neck to cool you off. The Sun defender is new to me and I have not yet used it in the 90 degree plus heat. I don't expect it to be as cool as the Boonie but with the stiff brim it will protect my face better.
