  • Bare-Bones, but Beautiful Blu-Ray Transfer, and No Switching Discs!
The Hobbit Trilogy and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy [Blu-ray ] This set is absolutely fantastic. It's a simple, yet elegant set for fans of the theatrical editions of the films. For those that may not know, there are two editions of each film: the theatrical edition, and the extended edition. The theatrical edition is what you watched in the theater. The extended edition contains many more scenes that originally didn't make the final cut, but were added in later to expand the storytelling. This set contains the theatrical editions. The extended editions are great and all, but they run for a very long time (up to 3+ hours). Not all of us have the stamina to watch a movie that goes on for 4 hours. Besides, the theatrical editions are great already. Additionally, the extended editions are so long that they actually require you to switch discs to continue watching the movie. When I was a kid, I remember my parents having Titanic on VHS. The movie was so long, it had to be put on two VHS tapes, and you had to switch tapes during the middle of the film. That's the same case for the extended editions of Lord of the Rings for both DVD and Blu-ray. Even though Blu-ray discs hold a lot of memory, the extended editions take up so much that they had to place the films on two discs each. You don't have to worry about that with the theatrical editions. The entire theatrical edition fits on a single disc, so no having to get up and switch discs. In my opinion, this makes for a better viewing experience. As for the packaging, it comes in an elegantly designed cardboard sleeve. The cover art is attractive and features several of the most well-liked characters of the films. The films themselves are placed inside a blu-ray case. The great thing is that they're not stacked on top of each other. Instead, each disc has its own space; they're placed on "plastic pages", so to speak. However, do know that this set does not contain all the special features that the extended editions do. This set is more "bare-bones", so to speak. You get basic features like subtitles, but nothing like a making-of documentary or behind-the-scenes clips. This is really intended moreso for people who just want the films. If you're fine with that, and you don't need all that extra stuff, this set is perfect. ... show more

  • Every disc played perfectly.
First Hobbit movie was good. The 2nd Hobbit movie grandsons (ages 13 and 14) found the dragon's constant bragging and bravado display boring. They did not finish the movie and also found the 3rd Hobbit movie a little boring. They loved all 3 of the Lord of the Rings movies.

  • They're still (7/6/21) mixing in extras DVD disks unplayable in the USA with this Blu-ray boxed set.
Just received the six movie, (3 Hobbit & 3 Lord of the Rings) Extended Editions, Blu-ray, set sometimes referred to as a "Middle Earth" set. I played all disks enough to see if they worked. What's good - the Blu-ray disks of all six movies do play on my USA player. Blu-ray disks with the extra features for the Hobbit movies also play. I watched each disk a little and picture quality is noticeably better than DVD versions. While shipped in only a bubble wrap bag, I didn't noticed any flaws in the box containing the set. The bad news, mentioned in earlier reviews, none of the extra features DVD's for the Lord of the Rings trilogy would play. I haven't seen this mentioned in reviews dated after mid or late 2020, so I thought maybe they'd resolved this. They didn't. A couple of quirks with sound and sub-titles. I have tinnitus (ringing in the ears) from the military and other jobs. If the music and sound effects volume goes past a certain level the ringing gets much worse. All the Blu-ray movies and Hobbit Blu-ray extra disks have an option for sub-titles. However, I couldn't make the sub-titles work on one disk of the Hobbit extras. Strangely, sound level on the Two Towers Blu-ray movie disks was noticeably lower than the other two Lord of the Rings movies. Simply turning up the volume overcame this. You decide if this set is worth your time and money. I don't often watch extras but these movies are classic and perhaps I'll want to. Think I have some of the Lord of the Rings extras on an older DVD set so I'll keep these Blu-ray movies, but won't give 4 or 5 stars for what is a non-premium boxed set with deficiencies. An aside to movie makers - It's estimated a third of the US adult population suffers from tinnitus. We're not the only customers who'd like to control voice dialog volume separately from music and sound effects. Also, quit screwing people around with regional limitations on content disks. ... show more

  • Great box set, can’t pass up the price!!!
So I just received this in the mail today. And it wasn’t until after I started writing my review, that I saw the other reviews, stating it was in the European format for the special features. I was really bummed out and thought I might have to return it. But after I pulled out the first three disks on “the hobbit, an unexpected journey”, all of the special features play on my American Blu-ray player. So maybe they changed the format lately, or I got the American version I guess. Anyways, I am throughly thrilled with this box set. My only complaint is that it was sent in a typical Amazon prime padded sleeve, and the edges of the box were a little smashed. It is nothing serious, just my OCD in wanting a perfect package. All videos play, and they are in amazing Blu-ray clarity. The booklet that comes with the box set gives you the list of each disks’ docs, and the many hours of extras, verging on excessive. For a true Tolkien/LOTR/Hobbit fan, this is a must have. For $100 you can’t pass this up!!! ... show more
