    • Great for a treasure hunt
I bought this chest for a treasure hunt for my son's 7th birthday party. I spent hours on-line trying to find a square chest, since his party was a Minecraft themed party rather than a pirate theme. I could not find anything truly square that would do the job. I saw this when searching for wooden chests. I deliberated about buying it because it was hard to tell on-line how much treasure it would actually hold. There were conflicting reviews, some reviewers thought is was larger than they expected and some thought it was smaller. I needed it to hold several treasures (enough for up to 20 kids). When it arrived I was pleased that is was larger than I was expecting it to be and that my treasures easily fit into this chest. I filled it with many mardi gras necklaces, gold coins, jeweled rings, and large jewels (red for redstone, emerald, diamond, etc for the Minecraft elements). I also found some small novelty treasure chests that were just large enough to hold a Hershey's chocolate nugget (iron ore for Minecraft) and I put 20 of them in this treasure chest as well. My one word of advice if you are having a treasure hunt. Make a small treasure bag for each kid and put them in the treasure chest and then, if needed, sprinkle a few loose treasures on the top for effect. I did not do that and left all the treasures "loose" in the chest. When the kids finally found this chest at our treasure hunt, they went wild, with "treasure" flying every where and it was hard to be sure every kid got at least one of every type of item in the chest. This treasure chest would hold 20 small bags (like the small red bag that comes with the chest or a sandwich bag that is maybe 1/3 to 1/2 half full) filled with a couple of mardi gras necklaces, rings, jewels, coins, and small candies. The chest itself seemed well made to me, as have other Melissa and Doug products we have purchased. The chest was even dropped on the ground from standing height and it is still intact. My kids haven't used the other things much that came with the chest although they would be great accessories for a Halloween pirate costume. The bandana is a little on the large side but I think it would work fine for using it as a head covering. The coins are not really "gold" in color, so if you want gold-colored coins, you'll need to purchase them separately. ... show more

When I ordered this playset, I was expecting the same kind of cheaply made things you would expect to find at a dollar store- I was purchasing primarily for the chest, as it's hard to find a pirate chest, even for play, that's the right size and inexpensive. I was pleasantly surprised! The box is real wood and painted with detail. The skull latch is plastic, but the fake jewel eyes appear to glow in the right lighting. It does have a decently sized secret compartment at the bottom- one of the wood planks pulls away to reveal additional storage about one inch deep. It's not terribly well hidden, the plank has a notch that lets you know it pulls away, but that does make it easier to use - it is, after all, a playset. In addition, the bandana is a large size, enough that I could use it as a small pirate flag. The eyepatch is cloth, with elastic and velcro clasp, to fit any size head. And the plastic coins are thick, good quality, and detailed- and come in a soft cloth bag that is very pleasing to the touch. Also, something they fail to mention, but it a nice detail- the cardboard wrapping the box when it arrives, has a treasure map on the bottom that you could cut out and play with- it's just cardboard, so not the quality of the other items, but could still be used for fun for a while. It has been a very long time since I have seen toys made of this quality, and I think if you were to find this same playset at a store such as Walmart or Target, they would be charging at least ten dollars more.     • Great product for kids
We've had this treasure chest for about a month now and I've been very happy with it. I'm a little surprised people complain about the construction because I feel it's pretty robust relative to most other toys these day. It's real wood, which is rare and generally a solid product. The lock/skull needs to twist to open the chest, which I thought was clever. This keeps it locked when new kids come to the house. ....how to open the chest is a secret. Overall the chest looks good. Paint job is decent. Could be better if being picky, but it's just fine for kids. It's not too heavy. I had a treasure chest the same size as this one when I was a kid. Yes, it was more robust, but weighted a LOT more. You didn't carry it around the house. Hence, I like this one is lighter. Love the feature of a hidden/secret compartment in the bottom. I just adds another element of mystery. The coins are just okay, but serve their purpose. I wish they were gold in color. I just ordered some gold coins ($2 on Amazon), but haven't received them yet. The pirate patch that comes with this doesn't get used at all. My son doesn't like it (too tight) and it doesn't fit our heads. It's not adjustable, other than the limited range of the elastic band. The flag is fun to have. We drape it over a pillow on the couch to designate "the pirate ship". We found buying pirate hats was a waste. They're just not functional enough to be used. They last about 2 minutes because they fall off or spin on your head. But buying the foam swords is recommended. They're great for playing around the house without anyone getting hurt. I don't recall the details, but you could buy a pack of 6 foam swords for like $10 on Amazon. ... show more
