Features

  • LIGHT AND PORTABLE: the Meinl Darbuka (sometimes called Middle-Eastern goblet drum) is easy to carry around and play while delivering a wide tonal range; get crisp "Tek" strokes and resonant "Doum" strokes that cut through easily
  • WHY IT MATTERS: it's perfect for bringing to drum circles, gigs, or classrooms if you don't want to carry heavier, bulkier drums; the variety of tones it produces can support a live acoustic band and are fun to explore playing on your own
  • DRIVING THE SOUND: made with a cast aluminum shell and weather-resistant synthetic head for consistent sharp tone; this combination of materials has a snappy response, even at a lower volume
  • OF NOTE: comes with a tuning key to make quick pitch adjustments; you can also unscrew the tension rods completely to change heads in moments
  • BY THE NUMBERS: the aluminum shell measures 7" W x 12 3/4 H; head measures 6 1/2"
  • THE BOTTOM LINE: this is a solid, dependable, lightweight drum with roots in Middle-Eastern dance music and applications for just about anything from drum circles to acoustic shows to contemporary pop music
  • THE BIG PICTURE: Meinl is a family-owned musical instrument manufacturer and brand established 1951 in Germany; our expert German designers have deep relationships with our builders to ensure you're delivered the absolute finest quality

Description

MEINL darbukas are made in the tradition of the original, esoteric goblet- shaped drums found in music from Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Southern Asia. Our darbukas are constructed from thin shells in various metals, each metal giving the different models their special timbre. The head is secured and tuned with external rings set close to the shell, in the Turkish-style. Light yet powerful, the darbukas have a deep full bass. They are well suited for high-pitched snapping sounds as well as a wide range of articulated "doum" and "tak" strokes.

  • Tiny, but probably the best sub-$20 instrument you can buy!
Size: 5 1/3"
This is a very fun little instrument and is a great value at $20. Short of a kazoo or recorder, I doubt you will find a better quality instrument for this price or under. It is all metal with a taut and quality head that is adjustable. It is small enough to play when lying on the bed or couch passing some time watching TV or listening to music. It also won't upset the neighbors with how loud it is. The dooms are not very bassy because of the size (it is small), however the teks are very good and metallic and it is a great little camping or on-the-go accessory to bring along because it is so small. I am a fan of Hossam Ramzy and his Sabla Tolo albums and figured I would get this as a fun little percussion toy. I liked it so much that I bought the 3020 model. I am a guitar player and rhythm and percussion are not my strong suit, but this little darbuka is easy enough to learn some fun rhythms in just a few hours if you are familiar with how the instrument is supposed to sound and how it is held. ... show more

  • Good Beginner one/youth sized Darbuka
Size: 5 7/8"
I bought this as my first Darbuka, My girlfriend is into Belly Dance and performing so I began studying the music side of the performance. This was a fun little drum to have in our apartment but it is tiny. I would say that this is pretty much for people who have small hands to maybe medium sized hands. Anybody with hands of a person like myself (9 inches from tip of thumb to tip of pinky finger when I stretch my hands out), might have trouble playing this drum easily. So, because of its size I would only recommend this darbuka for youth and adults with medium and smaller hands. With that I still enjoy this drum because it makes a great table piece for my apartment living room. Friends come over and as we hang out and kick it, we play with the drum on and off throughout the night. So for a good price, and the realization that this is not gonna be the one drum you will use professionally, then its a great buy for beginners or just people who enjoy drum music. ... show more

  • Nice drum, well representing the Turkish style
Very happy with this for the price. This drum represents the type well and was made in Turkey (appropriately, as it is the Turkish style). The metal work was smooth all around. As far as I can tell the "dings" that were cited as a complaint in another review are part of the fitting process of the head tensioning device. There were present on my drum, but do not in any way detract. I have some experience as a kit drummer and could easily get both the deep bass "doum" sound and the sharp "tek" sound - the other more sophisticated sounds are beyond my ability - tho I'm guessing the drum would have no problem producing them with more skilled hands. One additional note: Drums of this style have a drum head on the lighter side (compared to African drums); I would thus be reticent to hand this drum to child unsupervised. I did play the drum with an eight year old, who did fine with it under guidance. ... show more

  • Need to file the edges, but awesome otherwise
Size: 7 1/4"
Great little drum! Just be aware it is fragile since it is aluminum. If you sat on the bottom, you are likely to squash it. I would recommend a soft case of some sort. I would give it 5 starts, but the edges are somewhat sharp, so i had to file them down. An easy fix for me, since i had the right tool and it was easy to do. I also bought a cajon castinet made by Meinl and i have to say, i am impressed by the quality so far of Meinl products. ... show more

  • Nice basic Darbuka
Size: 6 1/2"
Know what you're getting. This is a very nice basic aluminum darbuka for the price. It has a higher pitch and a smaller area to hit the Doum sound, but not out of line with other Darbukas. It has a metallic sound, but it's pretty much how other darbukas made of metal sound. Good for kids and getting to know the instrument, then deciding if you'd like to pay 10-20 times the price for a bigger, more professional-sounding instrument. Regarding comments by the other reviewer, I've had no issues tuning. I'm one of the palest people on the planet. No issues with hands turning black - not sure what that's referring to. At the price, I see this is a much better option than the smaller Meinl Darbukas. ... show more

  • Best Cheap Instrument Ever
Size: 5 1/3"
I bought this just because as a drummer, I'm constantly hand-drumming on stuff and thought I might as well keep something around to develop a skill playing rather than just beating on a desk. I still keep it in my living room and just find myself drumming out beats on it while I'm doing other things. I'm planning on using these as a gifts for my friends' kids for birthdays, holidays, etc.. This is the best cheap instrument I could think to give to a kid. Not only is it steel so it will probably last forever (the body, anyways), but the head looks easy enough to change (4 lugs, comes with the wrench), and it's very small. ... show more

  • Perfect for Apartment Living and Camping/traveling
Size: 5 1/3"
This mini darbuka is perfect for my use. I live in an apartment, so a bigger Darbuka would be too loud. Because of the size you wont get a lot of base, but there is enough there to enjoy. I also like the drumb size because I can take it camping, and play to where it wont disturb other campers. If your looking for a small Darbuka that can travel well, take up little space but still have fun with, this will fit the bill. ... show more
