I always wanted a tatami room and recently decided to convert the “living room” of my tiny studio into one. These mats arrived quickly and in perfect condition. At first they will have a strong hay odor but that fades and becomes very subtle over time. Certainly better than the chemical odor of carpeting. I put this on my floor in my studio since we were doing some construction in my main room and didn't plan to have a bed for a little while. This worked quite well since the floor is made out of tile and it was quite cold and rough. Its surprising how well this works, though mind you its not a full bed. I haven't pulled out the twin futon mat to try it yet but did use this mat to practice yoga and it was awesome. It's firm yet has a slight give, less than my TheraBand puffy mat and just enough to be on my knees without pain and strain. Almost wish I'd gotten a larger size, as I could spread the yoga blocks on it better and I also think the twin futon mattress is actually a little larger than this mat so it could've done with a platform. I got this to use for meditation and exercise. It is a great size, comfortable and easy to store away. The description says it is 100% rush grass and talks about the tradition and how natural it is but if you look in the area above "About this item", it lists fill material as foam. For $60 you may want to look elsewhere because it is very misleading and if you were looking for all the great things it claims then you will be very disappointed. I am okay with the fact it isn't 100% rush grass as it claims because it works well for what I wanted it for. ... show more

I plan to use these tatami mats in my exercise room. These mats are well-made and attractive. They are made with grass and have a distinct grassy smell, even after they have been unboxed for several days. My wife says they smell like seaweed to her. The surface of the mat is quite firm. It is somewhat softer than the a wood floor, but I feel I still need a yoga mat to go on top of the tatami to do exercises comfortably. ... show more

Perfect weaving, firm with just enough give to feel like a firm mattress. Very different feeling than any synthetic pad. Very good craftsmanship, perfect weaving, with all the grass strands endings fitted on the inside for a perfectly smooth surface. The bands of green fabric over the edges are well attached and I expect this pad to last for years before any un-weaving may happen.
