  • 285 miles and didn't move an inch
Style: 50015 12V LED Towing Lights with Magneti...
APPLICATION I installed these lights on a Valley Industries tow hitch cargo basket, for use on my 2007 Jeep Wrangler Sahara with factory tow package and aftermarket Mopar Offroad Steel Bumper (it’s old, and different from the one they now sell under that moniker). I am the original owner of this vehicle, which has about 120,000 miles on it. FIRST IMPRESSIONS Lights present exactly as described. They seem to be of reasonable quality and the magnet seems strong. The brightness of the lights seems good. The wiring provided seems adequate to the purpose. They did cheap out a bit by requiring wiring to go from one light to another, rather than just mirroring the wiring to both lights. This may have an adverse effect on some applications. RELATED ITEMS I am using this receiver hitch with the following related items: Valley Industries Hitch cargo basket similar to: https://a.co/d/j7Iz3cu Yakima EXO Top Shelf (37 lbs): https://a.co/d/1bVlGhm Yakima EXO SwingBase (64 lbs): https://a.co/d/8VxoDC7 MODIFICATIONS Before trying to install these lights, I made a few modifications to suit my purposes. First, I modified each light to have a “pig tail” with a standard 4-way flat trailer connector on it. This way, the lights are easily and completely removable from whatever I want to put them on, and I don’t need wires running from one light to another. This was all important because I planned to use them on a hitch cargo rack, which is removable and a lot smaller than a trailer. I can easily take the lights off before removing the rack, and also use them on something else needed. The modification was easy to do – just remove the two screws on the bottom of the light to reveal the wiring, clip the wires and crimp on a pig tail. I should this in a photo. Then all you have to two is run the wiring to where you plan to put the lights, with a matching 4-way flat connector on the end, and connect them. I used the wiring they give you with the lights for that purpose. Second, because of all the review stating the magnets are not too strong and people have issues with the lights coming off while going down the road, I wanted some “fall protection”. So I installed an eyebolt in each light. It’s held on with a nylock lock nut, and the entire bolt can spin freely without it coming off. Using a heavy duty zip tie, I can secure the light to the cargo rack. If the light comes off, it will just hang in the air, rather than hitting the road and getting all busted up. I show how this works in one of my photos. INSTRUCTIONS I didn’t use the instructions, as I have installed lights many times and know what I’m doing. I can’t review these instructions for that reason. MY PERSONAL INSTALL EXPERIENCE This was an easy install, despite my additional modifications to the lights. I decided to install the lights “horizontally” rather than “vertically”. This meant that the magnets would have to work even harder, since they are subject to sheer forces from bouncing around and such. That doesn’t happen in a vertical installation, where the magnets are “face down” on some surface and supported by that surface. I was very pleased with my install design choice of allowing me to remove the lights easily, without worrying about the wiring. Just disconnect the 4-way flat at each light, cut the zip ties I added for additional security, and off they go. Easy peasy. PERFORMANCE REVIEW After all that work, I was ready to try it out on my road trip! It was about 285 miles total. I was not disappointed. Because of all the reviews indicating lights fall off, I was extra paranoid. I checked on the lights often. I had no issues. I went over big speed bumps, nasty rough Pennsylvania roads and even bumpy and rough Forest Service trails, all with no issues. At all! I mean, not even one millimeter! I wonder if the people complaining about the lights falling off were actually sticking them to plastic instead of metal. I DO show a light hanging in the air from the zip tie in one photo. It didn’t come off by itself, I just wanted to show the “zip tie feature” I came up with. As it turns out, in the configuration I was using, it IS easy to knock the light off by running into it while walking around the vehicle. I did this a number of times while loading the cargo rack. The zip tie keeps it from hitting the ground. So I would recommend doing this even though I had no issues with the lights coming off while actually driving around. OVERALL No complaints. I’m glad I bought them. No issues with the lights coming off while driving, the magnets worked great. ... show more

  • Works great!
Style: 80778 Magnetic Towing Light Kit
I used this on the back of a car while pulling it with a uhaul across the country. It worked great and lasted the entire journey. Be sure to secure the wires as they will rub on the car, causing light scratches that will need to be buffed out. They do what they are made to do and worth the money after one trip even. ... show more

  • Don't depend on magnets, lenses fall off- still cheap alternative when modified
Style: 80778 Magnetic Towing Light Kit
This is not a poorly designed product for what you get at the price. If you have a solid steal frame to attach it to and you don't go long or bumpy distances this would be perfect. But I have aluminum fender covers that I had to bolt on metal plates which did offer enough ballast or magnetic base for the lights. They flew off after the first bump going less than 20 mph! Also the lens kept coming off which was good because I had to switch the yellow to the red because either my wiring is wrong or there's is backward. Simple fix I just used some clear Post office tape to ensure they stay on. I eventually took off the magnets ( which are very nice as a pick up tool) and bolted the housing to a board that I strapped to the boat. This is still cheaper and more reliable then having something on the trailer which will submerge. They say that the ones that go under water when you back up are water proof but fail after awhile and this is a lot cheaper. The wires are pretty good and long. So it is a inexpensive set up but you got to make a mod if you want to depend on the system. I cant say that this is a cheaply made product either. However the lights do stick up like lollipop targets and may break easily with this bolt on modification( but they may also break if they fall off the trailer going 50 mph too-- which is highly likely). I use the board that I attached to the lights to strap down the bolts so it is not that big of an inconvenience and I can use it on any other trailer so I don't have to worry about the number one problem with my trailers-- the lights-- especially the nightmarish grounds! ... show more

  • Perfect fit, durability, WEAK MAGNETS
Style: 80778 Magnetic Towing Light Kit
These magnetic attached lights are perfect for my ATV/Utility trailer. Easy on/off access. The lights fit. The issue is that now that I've actually used them I'm afraid that they maybe to EASY OFF. The magnetic bottoms aren't as strong as I expected. Oh well, time will tell.

  • Reasonable for the Price, However...
Style: 80778 Magnetic Towing Light Kit
First thing to consider after looking at the price, is it's made in China. The quality of the wiring could be much better. The wire gauge is approximately 20 AWG; it's certainly less than 18 AWG. The electrical connections are poorly spliced. They are not water proof and one even had bare copper hanging out without insulation! The splice boxes do not have seals where the wires enter to connect to the lights and splicing. If you plan to use these with water craft, I would not let them enter water under any circumstances. Also note that the wires have only a single layer of insulation. I wrapped mine with a combination of electrical tape and spiral wrap. If you are handy enough, you can fix some of the problems I just mentioned. The lights do work, and the magnets work great. Just know what the short comings are. ... show more
