Clear glass edge to edge, easy to get focused on, just the right weight, body is easily gripped without the sticky rubbery feel. Other than the optical properties, I like the gray color of the Maven, it stands out from other binoculars with their usual green or blacks. The field of view at 314ft is reasonable for the price compared to NIKON Monarch 5 at 288ft, NIKON Prostaff 7s at 325ft, NIKON Monarch 7 at 351ft, MEOPTA Optica at 315ft and MEOPTA Meopro at 351ft. The MAVEN C1 10x42 I received is marked Japan, other units I have seen purchased by friends are marked Philippines. ========================================================================== Comparison between MEOPTA MeoPro 10x42 HD and MAVEN C1 10x42 ED: MEOPTA MeoPro Positives: 1. Clear and brighter glass. It is hard to quantify these parameter without comparing them to another binocular of similar class and price range, so I chose the MAVEN C1 10x42 ED to compare the MEOPTA with and I can say that the MEOPTA has a slight edge on the Maven. 2. Field of view is a bit wider than the MAVEN. 3. Body hinge is tight enough to hold its position, same tightness as the Maven. 4. Focusing knob is tight enough and make focusing fast. It is a bit less tight in comparison with the MAVEN. Both are good and acceptable, it is just a question of personal preference. 5. The MEOPTA Meopro 10x42 HD I received is marked ‘Assembled in Czech’. The MAVEN C1 10x42 ED is marked ‘Japan’. Other Maven C1 I have seen are marked ‘Philippines. MEOPTA MeoPro Cons: 1. Eye placement with the MEOPTA is very critical, one needs to position the eyes right at the center of the ocular lens, otherwise, it is easy to lose the image. It is like looking through a small long tube (say a straw), you can only see through when the tube is perfectly aligned with your eyes. It can be improved by adjusting the rubber eyecups by at least one position away from the ocular lens but this narrows down the field of view.. The MAVEN C1 10x42 is more forgiving with eye placement, I never have to tilt and move the binocular to hunt for the image. 2. There appears to be a lack of focus at about 5 o’clock position and about 2/3rd from center to edge of the glass. It seems to be right where the two circles of the left and right lens intersect. It is noticeable when looking through the center but when you shift your eyes to the blur area, it becomes clear. I have not seen any complaints of similar nature so I am not sure if it is inherent to the MEOPTA or if it is my eyes. I have not noticed this problem with the Maven. 3. The rubber armor of the MEOPTA has a more sticky feel than the MAVEN. 4. MEOPTA's tube diameter is smaller than the MAVEN's and it is less comfortable holding it for viewing. This will be especially true if the viewer has large hands. However, without direct comparison with the MAVEN, I guess the size and comfort level of the MEOPTA is good enough – it is a matter of personal preference. 5. The MEOPTA rubber eyecups have only 3 positions whereas the MAVEN has 4. 6. Most vendor websites including Amazon and OpticsPlanet state that the MEOPTA's body is made of Magnesium Alloy. However, the brochure that came with the binocular states that the body is made of Aircraft Grade Aluminum Alloy. ... show more

    • Excellent quality for a low price!

I have used a pair of excellent Leica Trinovid 10x42 BA binoculars on natural history-related trips all over the world since the early 1990's. However, they are very heavy (890g) so on outings where I think I won't be seeing anything very exciting I usually leave them behind - and sometimes regret it! After a gruelling 2 hour walk up steep hills through hot, humid rainforest, to see Wilson's Bird of Paradise on a recent trip to the Raja Ampat Islands in Indonesia, I decided I must try to find a lighter pair of bins. I actually already have a much lighter pair (300g) of Nikon HG L DCF 10x25 (=Premier LX L), but they are ironically TOO light and I can't hold them steady enough.. Anyway, when I got back to the UK I did a lot of research on the Web. I was looking for a relatively inexpensive and light pair with great optical quality, and in the end I purchased the Maven C1 10x42 as they had excellent reviews and weigh almost 200g less than my Leicas. I have now compared them to my Leicas, and to my eyes their sharpness and ability to resolve detail in low light are indistinguishable. The Maven's FOV is less, but the close focusing distance is much better. Their weight is just right for me to be able to hold them pretty steady. And not only are they very, very good value given their optical quality and durable build, but they have a phenomenal lifetime no-fault warranty. Because of their unusual business model of selling direct to the customer, Maven binoculars are about 50% the cost of what you would be charged for the same item in a shop. I ordered my pair from Maven in the USA via Amazon and received them in the UK only 6 days later. I will certainly be taking them on my next trip and leaving my Leicas behind… ... show more

    • $600 BINOCULARS IN DISGUISE

In the last five years, despite the fact that I take very good care of my equipment, I have had three pairs of the $100-$150 binoculars break and none of them were covered by warranty. I am not an optics connoisseur but was hoping that, if I stepped up to $500-$700 range I would be able to get a more durable and reliable set of binoculars with a strong honest warranty. I went to Cabelas and Scheels and looked at Nikon 7, Vortex Viper HD, Zeiss Conquest, Cabelas HD, and Bushnell Legend binoculars. While they all seemed to be nice binoculars, I may have expected a little to much from the Zeiss since they were $1000 and I could not tell any difference between them the Vortex or the Nikons. Also the Vortex had a great no fault lifetime warranty. In the past I've had some negative experiences with Nikon and their warranties, even though the salesman said that Nikon has improved their warranty to compete with companies like Vortex I decided to give them a pass. I ended up going home to research the Viper HD and in the process found reviews on Maven optics. I read some reviews and watched Youtube videos and decided to order the 10x42 C.1 and return them if I didn't like them. Once I got them, I went back to Cabelas and asked if I could see how much better the Vortex Viper HD was in comparison. The Vortex did have a locking diopter ring which I liked, but otherwise could see absolutely no difference. Maven also offers the same type of no fault lifetime warranty that Vortex offers. I purchased these Maven binoculars during a holiday sale and paid $297 and the Vortex were $600 so I decided the locking diopter ring was not worth $300 and ended up keeping the Maven C.1. I am amazed with these binoculars and a little disappointed I waited so long to get a quality set of binoculars. I wish there was a way to show what I see through these binos. They are very crisp and clear. When looking at pine boughs, I am able to see individual pine needles. I wear glasses and the eye relief allows a full field of view with no black edges. In low light (legal shooting light) they work very well. I do have a pair of old, heavy Minolta porro prism 50mm that may be brighter but the clarity of the Mavens makes up for any advantage the Minoltas might have. The overall build seems to be very strong and the diopter ring is stiff enough so that once I got it adjusted, I haven't had to touch it. I was a little concerned the 10 power might be too strong for woods use but the close focus, adequate field of view, and great resolution make these a perfect all around binocular for me. Finally, these binoculars weigh 24.5oz and some people might find these 10 power binoculars a little light and have difficulty holding them steady. In that case, he or she may prefer the 8x42 model. Either way, if you want $325-$350 binoculars that are comparable to $500-$700 binoculars I highly recommend the Maven C.1. When it comes to high quality optics that the average person can afford, Maven changed the game. ... show more
