One of my favorite travel purchases in decades, no joke. I've gone through so many various "weekender" bags, and I've really liked and continue to use at least one of them for shorter trips, but none are as functional as these Matein bags. They open like luggage, hold a ton, compress well, are durable, versatile and look just like a regular 'ol, nondescript backpack so that when traveling on budget airlines that are picky about the size of a personal item, they don't attract attention (provided you don't get them in the louder colors) so that you can skate by the gate agents, even if the bags are a bit too big or overstuffed. We were able to take a 2-week trip through Spain with enough clothing and shoes to take us from 50-something degree, rainy weather (read: bulky, warm clothes and shoes) to mid-70s weather, each armed with a 20" hard-sided carry-on, plus this bag. No checked bags and lost luggage for this couple, no siree! A couple things that other similar bags offer that I sort of wish this bag did: a charging port and a cup holder. But the charging port is just one more thing that has the potential to fail and become useless, so it's not a huge loss for me. Neither is the lack of cupholder, as it would hinder the ability to use the compression straps on the sides of the bag, so I understand the design choice. After purchasing my original bag in black, I purchased a couple other similar bags that did offer these features to compare, and kept going back to the Matein for weight, style, comfort and functionality. Again, I preferred it so much that I bought a second one in blue for the hubs. If something were to happen to this bag, I would 1000% replace it with the same brand. I cannot recommend it enough, and honestly try to find reasons to get away more (hah) so that I can use this bag because it's so thrilling to me to be able to pack it to the brim and still feel comfortable carrying it on my back. ... show more

This backpack has a great dynamic build quality. The weight of it is nice because it is light. Zipper quality is good and the size is perfect. It is versatile for travel needs, fits in the overhead plane compartment and does well when traveling by other means. So happy I found it.

The Great: You’re basically beating the airlines at their own game. Why? Because if you pack this thing well, it’s basically a carry-on that fits under the seat. It might be considered a bit small to be the customary carry-on in most parts of the world. I live in Southeast Asia and it’s ALL about weight. Budget airlines with silly rules. Nine times out of ten, if you’re at the gate with a rolling carry-on, you’re going to get targeted for weight (carry on AND personal item can only weigh 7kg or 15 pounds). Scales are everywhere and it’s a gamble every time. You’re likely going to get pressured to check the bag because of the age-old excuse of being “overbooked with a full flight.” The first picture shows the two bags we purchased. My husband’s blue bag slid his in under the seat sideways (but you can see it eats up the entire space.) I slid mine in bottom first and still had a size-able slot on the side to either stretch my feet or to put a small crossbody pouch. Not really knowing how much space I’d have on this first use, the third pic shows the little pouch I used. Next flight I’m going to bring a small crossbody. This bag also gives you the ability to navigate around the unfortunate seat that has the utility box (charging outlet electrical?). Pictures 2 and 3 show the nice ability to use the 4 clips on the sides of the bag to compress the bag itself and the pics also show you that you don’t have to join the general panic to get in line just to fight for overhead space - it’s one of the best parts of this bag. Sitting and enjoying my coffee and reading and waiting for the line to go down. The Good: I really like the simple design. Would it be better if it had a water bottle slot on the side? Yeah. It’d also be nice with a few more mesh pockets inside but these are in no way deal breakers. The Time Will Tell: Aside from my favorite aspect of this bag being the beating the overhead space fight and feeling immune to public panic to board the plane early… the other features that I love and drew me to the bag were the fact that this can double as a tote bag. That you can tuck the backpack straps, zipped up and hidden away, to avoid all the straps and buckles flying around, and getting them grimy on an airplane floor. Sometimes I just don’t want to do the backpack thing. But time will tell on the durability aspect of the tote feature. The handles just don’t feel very sturdy for long periods of use. My black bag arrived with a box cutter slice by the top handle (as other reviewers have experienced). I’m willing to just hand stitch it and hope it doesn’t get bigger. I’m all in with this bag… and hoping we have these for years to come. ... show more
