  • Well written, easy to understand and thorough.
I purchased this book because the manuals that come with cameras usually skip over details that are nice to know. The first book I purchased from this author was for my D800e..... It was excellent, this version for the D850 didn't disappoint.

  • Best D850 book out there!
I've purchased a few of books about the Nikon D850. This is by far the best of the bunch! The author makes it VERY easy to follow! The book mirrors the D850 menu structure! So, you can easily follow along. The author gives practical suggestions for settings based on his experience, and offers suggestions based on the types of use one might have. I found it very easy to follow. I purchased David Busch's book took, also from the same publisher. He jumps around quite a bit, and it was hard to follow. The only small gripe I have with Mastering the Nikon D850 is that the author incorrectly states that 2700-3000 Kelvin light is "blue" and 5600-9000 Kelvin light is "red." This couldn't be farther from the truth! He has these two color temperatures reversed. Perhaps the Nikon White Balance pushes more blue into the 2700K range and more red into the 9000K range, but the color temperature of light in the 2700-3200K range is 'warm' while light in the 4300-10000K range is "cool." (I've been a cinematographer for over 30 years, and these are the principals in which we use to light scenes every day! Science is science.) If you're looking for a great guide to help you LEARN how to use a Nikon D850 to the best of its ability, this is it! ... show more

  • Best book for anyone looking for an alternative to the manual....
I originally pre-ordered this book in paperback but was pleasantly surprised to find that it was available in Kindle and so ordered an immediate download the other day and determined to read the book over the last many hours. It is recommended to read the book with camera in hand and I will do that next over the coming week. And read it again after that. As I have done with several previous ‘Mastering....’ books by this very knowledgeable and capable author with several decades of experience. I spent a lot of time reading and rereading his book on the D500 last winter and again in the Spring. The D500, to me, is the companion camera to the D850. And so while waiting for this book on the D850 I felt the D500 book a good resource for the D850 as well. The thing I like about these books are, not just the tips thruout by someone who has been shooting professionally for decades, but also his personal ‘Settings Recommendations’ after each section. I look forward to those things while reading each section. I also like the technical explanations set aside here and there in the book for those like myself who choose to get a little deeper in the subject matter. The camera is a technical marvel but the book explains it all very well from start to finish. Much better than the manual and more concise as well as interesting. It’s got a personal touch to it also. I think the authors books, especially this one, are perfect for anyone who really wants to know their camera inside and out. Now like I said, I read this over a couple of days - with 5 hours sleep in between. Reading his other books, and especially ‘Mastering the D500, made it easier because I knew what to expect and I’m very familiar with the material and the D850 camera which I’ve had since last December. So also I’ve been looking forward to this book since last December and to get around the wait I read the D500 backwards and forwards since then with the D850 in mind. So the very helpful tips by a professional with decades of experience, his ‘Settings Recommendations’, technical data placed throughout the book for those like me with an interest (which are easily skipped over if you’re not inclined), well thought out chapters with careful explanations for everything, camera diagrams, step by step ways to adjust settings.........make this the only book you need to understand this wonderful camera. ... show more

  • Yes, you need this book.
I'm planning to purchase a used D850 and needed a good manual because this will be the most complicated camera for me yet. I'm not going to bad-mouth the popular competing manual, but this is by contrast well-organized and so far has not left me poring through an incomplete index in search of answers to questions that should have been answered in the text. • A must for any serious D850 owner. Very thorough. Goes well with the manual.
The Nikon D850 is a very complicated camera. I decided it had significant enough changes to my D800E and D810 to warrant thoughtful study. 250 pages into this book, I have already gained a deeper understanding of updated functions I never took the time to master on previous 800-series models; such as proper application of user banks and bracketing modes. The settings explanations and recommendations alone are worth the price of admission vs. only reading the manual. The author expertly explains time-saving menu navigation techniques that I now use on-site. Highly recommended... ... show more

  • Excellent Guide to Learning What Your D850 Can Do
I loved this book. I got it when I first received my D850 and made myself read through the book in order to set it up before using it. I’ve had trouble in the past with understanding my D800 and what the settings do. The confusion sometimes caused me to miss shots or take poor shots. I didn’t want to deal with the same confusion with the D850. The book helped me gain a good grasp of the camera’s capabilities and how and when best to use them. If you’re looking for a book to teach you to be a better photographer, this isn’t it. If you truly want to understand your D850, this is the only book worth buying. I loved how the book describes each setting, talks about how the setting can be used in taking photos, and gives you suggestions on the best way to configure the setting. I found the author’s configuration suggestions very helpful. The book is long but very skimm’able. You can easily skip sections you already understand well and concentrate on sections you don’t know as well. I highly recommend this book especially if you just purchased your D850. ... show more
