  • Not Snake Oil! Great for X-Box 360 and PS3
Size: 3 ft
The only case I found for keeping it was with my PS3, which did perform as advertised. The main reason I bought this cable was to use with my RGB modded N64 through an OSSC. Using the game shark code, I removed the first pass of antialiasing. Then I hoped upscaling from 480P --> 1080p with the cable and adding AA at the last step would result in a cleaner soft image. It did, but it also stretched the 4:3 content to 16:9 instead of integer scaling, which looks bad. I used HD Retrovision SNES component cables to the OSSC in Line Double mode. Also there was no sound. In Line 3x mode it had the correct aspect ratio, but still no audio, and the screen was peppered with graphical artifacts. It's clear the OSSC has issues with this cable or visa-versa. I would have liked to try it on an UltraHDMI modded N64 with Deblur enabled in addition to the disabled first AA pass. Sadly I'm still waiting on mine. I tried Dreamcast via D-sub 15 to the OSSC. No audio and screen was stretched to 16:9. It did look pretty amazing, if it were not for that aspect ratio. No setting I could find fixed it. The cable must do it on it's own. ***EDIT*** I discovered that the audio issue can be resolved by toggling the audio source in the OSSC menu. It seems to be caused each time the game switches from 480i and 240p, so certain games and consoles will run into issues with this combination (N64 for example). That's very annoying. I don't have this issue with a regular HDMI cable. The 16:9 stretching can be fixed by toggling the TV aspect ratio to normal, which squeezes the picture back to 4:3. However, be aware that not all TVs are flexible in this regard. My VIZIO P-series is on a power trip and stubbornly reminds me "it's already in the best mode", disabling other aspect modes (which is a stone wall slap in the face). A true upscaler like the Micomsoft XRGB mini framemeister has options to crop and scale the image displayed. So I could get around this issue by adding it to the chain. For example, N64--(Component)-->OSSC--(mCable)-->Framemeister--(HDMI)-->TV. Unfortunately, the cost of doing that is prohibitively high with the Framemeister costing over $300, the OSSC over $150, and the mCable around $100. Not to mention that the framemeister is soon to be discontinued, adds about a frame of lag, and is another thing taking up space in my AV setup (not to mention the rats nest of wires). ***EDIT*** There is no point in keeping the cable Just for movies, as there is a cinema version that is less expensive. I am not willing to keep it just for PS3/X-Box 360, which IMO look fine on a 4K TV without this cable. I was under the impression that it would upscale 1080p content to 4k, but it didn't work for me... ***EDIT*** Actually, it does. However, it only does so for 1080p 24Hz content, like movies. I watched a BluRay on my PS3 upscaled to 4K and it does look better than without the mCable. 1080p games don't upscale to 4K because they run at 60 FPS (Hz) and the mCable can't do that. For them it adds nothing to the image. It does upscale 480p/720p --> 1080p, with good, lag free, Anitaliasing. You'll need to change the settings in your PS3/X-BOX 360 to output in 720p instead of 1080p. In the PS3 at least you can change the BluRay video output separate from Games, so both 1080p for games and 4k for BluRay will be handled by the cable. The stretch to 16:9 aspect ratio may be an issue if your TV doesn't allow you to squeeze it back to 4:3, if you plan on using this cable to play SD era games. ***EDIT*** Bottom line: If you want to smooth out jagged lines on 720p era games (PS3/X-Box 360) then this will work great. If you only want to upscale BluRay to 4K for a modest bump up in picture quality, buy the cinima cable. If you own a PS3, get the Gaming edition. If you thought of pairing it with an OSSC to handle retro games, they don't play nice! You may need a frameister to solve aspect ratio issues, it your TV rudely refuses to. ... show more

  • Great cable
Size: 3 ft
I bought this product for my switch dock. Was excited to try and it does look much smoother all around, very nice there. I tested it on warframe just bc it is pretty graphics heavy. I could notice a huge difference on all of the warframes edges, much much smoother. Pokemon Violet looks much better on my mointor as well. I actually have a round hat on now lol, no jagged edges. When i first plugged this into my 4k monitor I had no audio. I checked my switch TV settings and nothing worked. Plugged the USB power source in multiple different spots. Nothing worked. Then I went to my monitor settings and went to HDMI. It was set to 2.1 and I changed it to 2.0 and the audio came blaring through. Weird bc the original switch HMDI cable gave audio on the 2.1 setting. Whatever though, I'm just glad it works well, and I can't wait to pair it with the photofast 4k upscaler. ... show more

  • It does what it claims, which is impressive, but be careful about ultrawide.
Size: 6 ft
tldr; It works well. I was rather surprised when I discovered that it actually did have a visual impact when plugging it into things. Just be careful about ultrawide screens if you use them, and the contrast is real. The long of it: Device of choice being plugged into: I have an alienware 55" 4k monitor that I use as a TV. It has multiple HDMI ports just like your standard TV, but it has a pretty nice OLED screen and lacks all the smart app nonsense that my LG TVs have that I used prior. Device being tested with the cables: Switch: I first got the cable and laughed my way to the back of my screen to plug the mcable into my switch and the screen. I had no faith this would work any better than a regular hdmi cable, and boy was I wrong. I tried several games, from 3D like Kirby and Mario Odyssey to crunchy 2D pixels like Shovelknight and Touhou Luna Nights (and others). The result was largely the same across all games tested. Before the cable, I had to accept that a Switch on a 4k screen wouldn't be perfect, but it did result in some kinda blurry edges and whatnot. That cable has 1000% taken care of that. All games tested yielded impressively sharper images that simply looked cleaner across the board. Naturally, seeing this outrageously positive impact, I needed another cable. PS5: Testing on this console was rather limited. My latest enjoyment has been playing FF14 (mmo) on the console. Due to the nature of the game, I play it what I'd consider fairly regularly- on this screen no less (as compared to my desktop PC). To be honest, the PS5 and a regular everyday hdmi cable made the game more than enjoyable to play already. The PS5 does good work on that front. However, after seeing the cable in-action on the Switch, naturally I was like "dang, how awesome would it be to make them polygons sharper yet?". The very first thing I noticed was how preposterously contrasted everything became. Note: I don't know if this was because I had a crappy cable before, if this cable is defective, or something else. Most all icons on the screen and even the text were insanely bright/dark contrasted, making it difficult to make out most icons and text not the most pleasant to read. After fiddling with the TV knobs a bit, I was able to get it back down to a reasonable level, but contrast is absolutely a power-point for this (for better or for worse). Otherwise, the biggest difference noticed was the fact that it didn't improve the quality of the video by an impactful amount like it did on the Switch. Things look a little sharper I suppose? But the difference is minor at best really. The next test was against good ol' Cyberpunk2077 (ps5 edition). I observed exactly no difference from how it ran before. Perhaps because I hadn't played it as recently as FF14, but it appeared to run just as smoothly, look just as sharp, but still did retain that heavy contrast modification. Lastly, I also use Hulu/Netflix/etc to stream media on my PS5, and also observed no significant difference there- I'm guessing because network conditions probably impact the quality of video that comes to the device (allowing real 4k to potentially be used instead of the cable needing to upscale). Despite the lack of improvement for the PS5 using this seemingly magic cable, I needed yet one more. The Desktop PC: I run a Windows desktop PC that runs AMD for CPU (ryzen 9 7950x) and GPU (radeon rx 6950 xt). It uses a smaller and a different shape monitor than my TV. It is a 21:9, 34", 3440x1440, curved. For the life of me, I could not get the cable to render resolution higher than 1366x760 or something incredible small, and the result obviously is that this is unusable. I am not sure if this cable is defective, but after poring over the amazon q&a for this product, I uncovered two voices, one saying it worked fine for them, another explicitly saying it did not work at all because the cable does not support ultrawide 21:9 ratio'd monitors. I do not know which of these are true, but this has translated to me having to find a new use for this cable (which I have). ... show more

  • Worked Wonderfully until it Failed
Size: 3 ft
The unit worked really well on last-gen games, and even improved streamed movies, it seemed to smooth out the artifaction that naturally occurs due to the image compression. After a year or so of use, the cable failed. It stopped passing through video entirely, not just failing to process the image, but rendering itself useless as even an HDMI cable. Verdict: Paying for improvement, but it is something you will need to buy yearly, or bi-annually. so bear that in mind when purchasing. ... show more
