  • Great! Mandy's Best Album of original material!
I don't know exactly how I started to listen to Mandy (I normally listen to Radiohead and Tori Amos). But I think I was drawn to her more than her popular peers (Britney & Christina) because there was a sincerity about her. She's not one to try to take the spotlight by doing some "stunt". Her focus in her career is something to be admired because she realizes that she should be into the music and not getting publicity and sales(even though those things are nice sometimes). That's why she decided (against the label Epic's wishes) to do a cover album of songs that she liked (Coverage). "Coverage" showed to me a maturity that was starting to appear in the album "Mandy Moore". She went from doing something like "So Real" (a debut that Mandy seemingly has decided to ignore, and for good reasons) to doing an album that really relied on the producers to try to seperate Mandy from her bubble-gum pop past. This seemed more like a debut in trying to show the difference between Mandy and her young-pop peers. And I think they succeded. That's why this album is appropriately titled "Mandy Moore". "Saturate Me" was definitely the standout track. The sounds and Mandy's voice flow so well together. "One Sided Love" was also great with a good beat (seemed inspired by pop of the 80's and Middle Eastern music for a rocking blend, I know that sounds corny but it's hard for me to describe but simply the song is wonderful) Mandy has gone a long way from her "Candy" days and is on her way to being seen as a serious vocalist. This album was the start of that. ... show more

  • *Mandy Moore!*
Mandy Moore manages to pack more hooks, melody, beats, clever production flourishes, and fun into its 13 tracks than nearly all of its peers -- remarkably, it's a stronger album, through and through. That doesn't mean that it has singles as strong as those albums; even if the surging "In My Pocket," the faux-sitar spiked "You Remind Me," and hip-hop ballad "Saturate Me" are all fine tunes, meant to be played on the radio. Mandy Moore is such a good record because of consistency. This may not hit tremendous heights, yet everybody involved is working so hard that they've managed to come up with a record that's consistently satisfying. It doesn't stretch the teen pop formula much, just enough to give the record character, and Moore delivers the songs sturdily, never taking the forefront, but blending into the lush, layered production, so the music just rolls forth as a whole. And that whole sounds great -- immaculately crafted, precisely polished, exactly what a teen pop album should be. Of course, it would have been greater if a couple of the songs were genuine knockouts, but usually this genre sacrifices consistency for dizzying peaks and it's refreshing to hear a teen pop record that plays like a record, instead of singles-n-filler. XoXo Alex! :) ... show more

  • A Teen Pop Album With Substance
Mandy Moore's self titled album shows her still being young, while her maturity takes shape. "In My Pocket" is about having fun on a limited budget, while "Split Chick" shows her mischievous, flirty side. The only problem I have (and it's a minor one), is the tacky "vinyl record" sound effect on "From Loving You". As far as I'm concerned, that format needs to die once and for all! ... show more

  • Mandy Moore's second album (with all-new material). Self-titled. Track by track review.
I'm the 300th reviewer! Woohoo! Love Mandy's music, new or old. Anyway... ONE * In My Pocket -> Quirky as hell and a grower. I like the energy though. 4.25 stars. TWO * You Remind Me -> A great, great track. Has a very big hip-hop beat with R&B undertones. A perfect mid-tempo. Should have been the first track. 4.5 stars. THREE * Saturate Me -> Another lovely, relatable mid-tempo that has the beat of "In My Pocket" sort of, minus the guitars and with the R&B influences of "You Remind Me". Better than the former, less impressive than the latter. 4.5 stars. FOUR * One Sided Love -> This track is really abrasive. You're gonna like or hate it. At first I wasn't crazy about it but I like certain parts like the pre-chorus and the beautiful albeit short bridge. Has that middle eastern vibe in production again. 4.25 stars. FIVE * 17 -> I'm really digging the speedy vocal arrangement and thoughtful lyrics to this song. I'm 26 but I'm a sucker for songs that are innocent like this. Love this one. 4.5 stars. SIX * Cry -> The mid-tempo with meaning that we've all pretty much heard before. I liked the lyrics when I first heard it and it holds up these days also. 4.25 stars. SEVEN * Crush -> This was definitely my favorite single. Very catchy yet kinda subtle. Lovely and relateable bridge. However, it wasn't very successful on the charts. Kinda like the other singles. Sad, really. 4.5 stars. EIGHT * It Only Took A Minute -> This mid-tempo almost feels like a ballad. However, all the loud production keeps it from truly being so. It's a great song with decent verses but a simple, easy chorus that will get stuck in your head that you can also sing along to. I think this is my favorite track. 5 stars. NINE * Turn The Clock Around -> Very poppy. One of the only truly upbeat tracks on an otherwise mid-tempo filled album. I love how this track switches things up. Love the bright, life-like chorus. 4.25 stars. TEN * Yo-Yo -> This track is another unique one. It's another mid-tempo with a bursting chorus. It has a nice backbeat but with definite pop overtones. Once again, love the bridge. 4.25 stars. ELEVEN * From Loving You -> This is the average track on the album. It's OK, but the climax is too much. The chorus gets repetitive by the end of the song and you don't really feel that with the other tracks. The only thing that saves it from totally stinking is its space-y production. Sounds great at first, but kinda sucks the life out of the album. In my opinion, the only cheesy track on the album. Sorry, Diane. STAY OFF OF MANDY'S ALBUMS! SHOO!! 3.5 stars. TWELVE * Split Chick -> Like this one too. It's kinda schizophrenic with all its energy. Upbeat. 4 stars. THIRTEEN * When I Talk To You -> A beautiful yet standard-sounding ballad. Co-written by Mandy herself. 4 stars. Mandy Moore hit it out the ballpark with her self-titled sophomore set. I love this album and it will hold a special place in my heart for some time to come. I regret not getting it when it was the thing to listen to! I had the first album though. :) The only track I don't like is "From Loving You". Why Diane Warren had to be included on this album is a headscratcher. She penned another sappy song but this time for Mandy. Some of her ballads work, some don't. This one didn't. The production was nice though and gave me great anticipation for it. It just let me down. Mandy's second best album. Too many mid-tempos, not enough ballads. But most of the tracks are good. 56 ÷ 13 = 4.30 4.3 stars. DOWNLOAD: "It Only Took A Minute" "You Remind Me" "17" & "Saturate Me" HONORABLE MENTION: "Crush" ... show more
