  • Very good book on Machining
I purchased this book and the volume 2 as well. These books go into detail on most of the general purpose manual machines you are likely to encounter, as well as single point tool function and give quite a number of examples. It also gives a good number of charts on cutting speeds as well as correction factors for different depths of cut and feed rates. Gives k values for calculated horsepower required for a given cut. It covers the lathe, milling machine, shaper, planer, layout, surface grinder, cylindrical grinder, tool and cutter grinder and jig borer. As this is an older book, it doesn’t' cover CNC at all and has one chapter on CNCs predecessor, NC. This gives very good coverage of manual machining; I was especially interested in the shaper and planer chapters, as information on these machines is no longer available in modern texts. ... show more

  • this is the one you want for learning or reference
One of the best texts out there for manual machines. Vol 1 is lathes, saws - vol 2 is milling machines shapers and grinders. Excellent learning tool. Not dumbed down like current texts with so much safety procedures you never see how to cut or turn. Complete - usefull as a reference. Has all the machines with all the features you'll find in a hobby or manual shop. Published in 1981 so still relevant. Highly recommende as a buy. ... show more

  • Good book for beginning home machinist.
Nice, well organized book. Machinery described is dated, but then all of the machinery in my home shop is older than I am, so this is not a problem.

  • Good but dated
Overall this is a very good book. This moderately experienced home shop machinist definitely learned from it. I have only read volume 1. The only gripe I have is that despite the copyright date the text and especially the photos are very dated. More 50's and 60's than the 1981 copyright date. That's OK for the most part, but there is no discussion any modern machinery, I think DROs got about two paragraphs. This book is definitely more detailed than Machine Shop Trade Secrets or Machine Shop Essentials and a good addition if you already have these. If you're OK with not having a book on the latest machinery and technology this is a good reference. ... show more

  • Great book seller!
Seller under promised and WAY over delivered. Book was graded as Good to Very Good but it looks like it just came off the printing press! Thank you!

  • Good reference book in the shop
Awesome book. I would recommend to anyone getting into machining and looking for more in-depth subject matter.

  • Excellent Book
This is an excellent book. The engineering, materials, and physics information applicable to running common machining operations is covered. Formulas which explain how to choose what speed to run a tool at are covered. It has helped me correct problems I have had from running metal machining tools at the wrong speed. Be sure to buy both volumes. ... show more

  • Should be one of your first library purchases. No machine shop should be without it.
An invaluable reference for all machinists. Price is also attractive. I would also recommend volume II to make your purchase complete.
