Pros- the case was the nicest thing in this purchase lol, the reel was okay. Cons- I hooked a small bluegill and my rod snapped. Ive never seen something of such bad quality in my life the rod is garbage. Don't buy this product.

I am new to flyfishing but know the basics. I was looking for a starter combo and found this. I do have to say the quality appears good and is at a great price point for what is shown online. I placed an order for the 9'; 5 weight combo rod and reel. What I received was a 8' 4"; 3 weight rod and reel combo, which is significantly smaller and lighter than the 9' 5 weight one. Thinking there was a mixup, I ordered a replacement but a few days later got the same kind again. This time I paid attention to the packaging (see photo) and noticed the label is passing the 3 weight as the 5 weight. This was attempt number two and I feel mislead. If you order this, pay close attention to what you get. Some of the other reviews on this breaking could be thinking they have a weight that they don't. ... show more

I have 4 fly setups that are much heavier and much more expensive for salt and bass. I wanted something light and cheap to leave in the truck to fish small ponds for bluegill and the occasional small large mouth on my way home from work. I figured what the heck, this combo costs 1/10th of my 7wt setup. I am honestly super impressed. I figured with the price I was going to get something super flimsy and low quality, but I was pleasantly surprised. Even the line is good. Rod has a nice fast action great finish surprisingly light, and although the reel isn’t the best looking, it does what it needs to do on a 3 wt, which is hold the line. The carry case seems to be made well, and the extra fly box and storage on the carry case makes keeping this setup under the seat of my truck a breeze. For bluegill and crappie this thing has taken the place of my TFO 5wt. Blue gill the size of your hand feels like fighting a 7lb bass on a bait caster. Oh and the free hat they threw in was a nice bonus as well. Thanks yall, I’ll spread the word to my buddies. ... show more

UPDATE: Manufacturer saw my review and volunteered to send a new rod section. New section arrived about 6 weeks after purchase. Now I have a complete rod with functioning guides. I'm upping the rating to 4 stars as this is a good starter combo and certainly worth the money spent. The rod is a nice configuration, 4 piece travel rod is ideal for taking on a plane. The reel is adequate and comes pre-spooked with floating line and a tapered leader. The problem for me is the first guide. The ceramic ring (or whatever material it is) is gone and the guide has a sharp inner surface so if I use it as is, the fly line will be ruined in no time. I’m not sure I have time to return it before my fishing trip… so I may be stuck. I’d give this rod high marks if not fir thy e defective guide. Nice weight, casts well. But… broken guide. ... show more

I should have avoided buying this due to the fact that it is made in China. Maybe it was just a dud, but the reel is pure junk. Even before using it on the water, I was suspicious of it. Came overloaded with line. Retrieve was silent but clunky and seemed slightly wobbled. Drag appeared to be fine, but had very limited fine tuning. Balance with rod was sub-par, but figured it was workable. On the water, the retrieve was bad from the beginning and just got worse. It was “seated” in place properly and there were no obstructions but it still had a disjointed wobble to the retrieve. Used a hand retrieve when landing a fish, but reeling in to load up line again was annoying and frustrating with the wobble. After 2 hours on the river, I kept the rod and tossed out the Chinese made junk. Just poor quality. MaximumCatch should abandon using Chinese manufacturing— you get what you pay for. It’s resting in a trash bin. Wish I saved it to return for my money back… my mistake. Found a Waterworks (made in USA) reel on Craigslist for $40 and I can already tell it is built to last more than 2 hours. Lesson: Don’t buy Chinese-made products if you can avoid it. ... show more

The media could not be loaded. I had bought this outfit to start fishing bluegill, smallmouth, and trout in western PA. When I had received the order from Amazon I was impressed with the look and feel of the rod and reel. And had caught some small bluegill and crappy at a nearby pond. My second outing was a trout stream where I managed to land a nice rainbow on this outfit. After that trip it all went down hill. The rod tip broke after 2 hours of fishing with this rod. On my third trip out at a smaller trout stream after 5 casts the reel started to fall apart from the drag and the bearings began to unseat and fall out of the reel. This outfit has been a major disappointment. I have managed to catch more fish on a borrowed cortland outfit from Walmart that a friend had lent me that cost half the price. The fly box and rod case are nice but I could get the same or better quality products at Walmart or Dunhams for less then $90. ... show more
