Description
The Insulating Fire Brick (IFB) is a type of soft brick made of refractory ceramic material, a blend of alumina and silica, that can withstand extremely high temperature applications and has a low thermal conductivity. This IFB is an excellent insulator and reflects heat well. Insulating Refractory Fire Bricks are light in weight and can be easily cut by handheld hack saw or any other hand tool like chisel or drill. They are ideal for creating custom shapes and cavities. IMPORTANT: Do not confuse this lightweight Insulating Fire Brick (IFB) with the dense Firebrick. Hard Firebricks are much heavier, harder and difficult to shape. Insulating Fire Bricks are softer, much better insulators, and easier to shape. For example a 2300F rated IFB weights only 2 lbs. The same size hard firebrick weights more than 7 lbs. Important Safety Information DANGER All Insulating Fire Bricks have a hazard communication warning label and prop 65 warning for airborne fiber inhalation. Please consult the Safety Data Sheet for more information. HAZARD STATEMENT This product contains crystalline silica, which if inhaled in the form of quartz or cristobalite over a prolonged and repeated period is known to cause cancer. This product does not present a hazard if dust is not created during handling. PRECAUTIONARY STATEMENT Avoid creating airborne dust. Avoid creating airborne dust, by only using hand tools. Frequently clean the work area with HEPA filtered vacuum or wet sweeping to minimize the accumulation of dust. Do not use compressed air for clean-up. Individuals should wear gloves, goggles and an approved respirator if dust is present. SAFETY DATA SHEET Upon request we can provide the full SDS sheet for these products. Soft Brick with Porous Structure Great insulator and very light weightMade of refractory ceramic material. A blend of alumina, silica and some calcium oxidePerfect balance of low density and homogeneous porosity.Easy to shape, cut, and carve with common wood working tools Read more Withstands High Temperature - Great Insulator The IFB insulating refractory bricks are rated for high temperature uses. The light weight fire brick application is broad, mainly as insulator in industrial and hobby kilns, forges, furnaces heated by electric spiral elements or gas burners for hot face lining or outer heat insulation. See the temperature ratings and comparison table further below for specific models. Read more Insulating Fire Brick Applications Soldering Surface for Jewelry Maker: You can easily solder jewelry on this fire brick. You may drill little holes in the brick to keep your jewelry in place while soldering. The fire brick allows you to solder more quickly and efficiently because you can concentrate the heat where you want it. PMC+ and PMC3 Metal Clay Firing: Jewelry makers can use this fire brick as a safe surface for firing metal clay with a butane torch. Kiln for Pottery Making: This insulating firebrick is also great to build larger kilns for pottery makers. If you have a missing or defective kiln brick, you found the perfect replacement brick to fix your oven. Build a Mini Forge: The Lynn Manufacturing Insulating Firebrick is perfect to build a mini forge for knife making. There are many tutorials online on how to use fire bricks to build a mini forge. Read more Structural density is in direct correlation with how brittle or soft the brick is. A 2300 F rated IFB is much softer and brittle than a 3000 F IFB, but the insulation is much better on the 2300 F rated brick. The insulation value after all comes from the porosity in the material. You can see the small voids in the detail pictures. Please choose your brick according to the properties for your desired application.
