Top Amazon Reviews

  • Sound and tonal qualities are awesome. A lot of guitar for the price.
Color: Black
The media could not be loaded. Overall, I am very happy with this guitar. I’ll break my review down into a couple of sections but the overwhelming theme is going to be “worth more than I paid”. When I was first asked to review this guitar, I was a little hesitant. I have 10+ years of playing experience, having played in college, and then again for a church later in life. There have been more than a few guitars in those years, and that’s where the comparison starts. I’ve played the entry-level Fender, Yamaha, Washburn, and Jay Turser acoustic guitars over the years and I can honestly say that this Horse brand guitar just plain sounds better than most of those. If you’re a beginning guitar player, go ahead and play the strings that come on the guitar. Learn your chords and a few songs. About the time that you’ve learned your “big 3” chords and 4 songs, it will be time to get new strings. Buy nice strings and have someone help you to string your guitar. The advice given to me by a long time guitar player and instructor is to buy light or extra light coated strings. It just makes the guitar sound better. Having said that, the strings on this guitar are serviceable and they do give a good sound. Now, on to the sections! First Impressions: The guitar arrived very quickly (Amazon Prime rocks!) and I was happy to see that it arrived well packaged and protected in a guitar-specific shipping carton. The guitar case is a padded soft-case, and better than most cases that come with guitars in this price range. The color is attractive and it does have a Horse logo that is not too large or obnoxious. The extras that come with the guitar included an assortment of picks in different colors (medium stiffness, more on that later), a very functional capo, a soft polishing cloth, an extra set of strings, a “mute” for practice time or to help prevent string ringing, a hex key to adjust the neck tension and a small tuner. The tuner works well and is really pretty handy. I found it to be accurate during the tuning of the guitar and wasn’t too difficult to read. Last in the bundle was a brightly colored guitar strap. It’s useable, but I always recommend that a new guitar player find a strap that they like AND is comfortable. The guitar itself was flawless. No dings, no scratches, no issues at all from shipping, storage, manufacturing or packaging. The flat/satin finish is a nice touch and gives a good feel to the guitar. The color on the face is really nice and doesn’t hide the grain of the wood. The woods used in making this guitar all look to be of high quality. No grain defects or anything like that on the face, back, neck, or sides. Guitar Feel: The satin finish on the neck allows for easy hand movement during play. Chord changes were effortless. The frets are all well finished with no sharp edges or loose frets. Believe it or not, at this price level it’s hard to find a guitar that doesn’t have a bad fret or two. The inlays on the fretboard are nice and symmetrical, allowing you to hit the right fret without being visually distracting. There are also cheater dots on the side of the neck (which you also don’t always find on the entry-level guitars). The design around the soundhole is nice and the abalone-like “inlay” has some depth to it. I don’t believe that it’s an actual inlay, but it does have some understated depth and flash. There is a lot of small detail in this guitar as well as attention and accuracy to how it was finished. No crooked lines or splotches in the finish. Everything is straight and symmetrical as it should be. The dark finished tuners are really the icing on the cake. They bring it all together. Guitar Sound: I played with the picks that shipped with the guitar, but I do not like a thick pick. I always get a light (thin) pick when I buy them for myself. If you are a beginner player, do yourself a favor and get some thin picks to start with. You’ll thank me later as they are much more forgiving. This guitar has some good sound in the higher ranges, but it really shines with the deeper bass notes. I was really surprised at the tonal quality of this guitar. It’s not uncommon to buy an entry-level guitar and to get a flat sound. The Horse guitar did not sound flat at all. It had depth and richness that I was not expecting. With a different set of strings, this guitar is going to become my travel/camping/casual strumming guitar. Guitar Quality: Definitely a high-quality guitar. I tuned the guitar upon arrival, pulled the strings, and tuned it again. Then I let it sit for 4 days and checked the tune. There was only 1 minor adjustment needed to bring it back into tune. Only having to touch one tuning knob on a brand new guitar is really unheard of. Overall build quality is great, the wood is high quality, and the tuners are high quality. I like the fact that it comes with two strap pegs. The cutaway section on the guitar is comfortable and lets you play the high end of the neck. I wish that I could have posted a longer video to show how fun it is to play this guitar. My summary: This is a great buy at this price point. If you are looking for a good looking first guitar that also sounds good, then go for it! I cannot stress enough how good this guitar sounds and the quality. Very happy with it. ... show more

  • Looks absolutely incredible, feels great, plays great, and has quality accessories - amazing case!
Color: Brown
I wanted this guitar because it is GORGEOUS and incredibly priced for an acoustic electric. I'm a novice player - I've been playing for years, but very casually and I'll be honest that I have little natural talent, so learning to play is a lot of work for me. For that reason I need A GUITAR THA PLAYS EASY and LOOKS GREAT, and makes me just want to pick it up every day. This guitar totally does that. SUMMARY: This is a BEAUTIFUL INSTRUMENT that plays really nicely in both acoustic and electric modes, and it comes with nice accessories. It's as WELL BUILT as my Lyon, SOUNDS AS GOOD as my wife's Baby Taylor (which you see next to it in one of the pics), and LOOKS BETTER than both. It’s currently my favorite guitar of our six instruments. And I’ve always wanted an acoustic electric, and finding one so good looking at this price – I couldn’t resist. DETAILS: LOOKS. This thing looks amazing. I love the horse theme, so FUN AND HAPPY, which matters to me - I play to be happy. The WOOD IS BEAUTIFUL, with a very interesting grayish brown top stain. The dark almost classic sunburst edges really compliment the mahogany fretboard. And the back of the neck, it says it is okoume Wood... I never heard of that, but I looked it up and it's from Africa, commonly used for its beauty but low price. Love it! It has such a soft grain, looks so smooth. And that SOUNDHOLE ROSETTE - the colors are awesome. The INLAY HORSE HEAD on the 12th fret is such a subtle, classy touch. The only thing I don't love is the white banding around the edge of the top and along the sides but that's just me - it's seems to add a country look that isn't my style, but it's fine and my wife really likes it. The cutaway at the base of the neck gives it a nice look, but I'm not good enough yet to play that high, so for me it is all aesthetic. The TUNING PEGS are also gorgeous, a deep metal color almost like hematite – love them. And the backs came covered in removable plastic – this thing was packed with care to arrive flawless – so great. SIZE & FEEL. The graphic showed me how tall and wide it was, and I knew it was a standard full size dreadnaught style. I was hoping that, like some acoustic electric hybrids, the body might be a bit thinner, and it is but just 1/4 thinner body than my Lyon. So definitely full size. It has built in strap buttons, which is common but important. SOUND. It sounds fantastic, in both acoustic and electric. I knew this because the listing had a video of someone playing, and two reviews already had better players than I playing it, so you can hear the sound there. I can add this – I tuned it up, played out 20 minutes, then set it down for a few hours. With most guitars you would then need to tune it again, but it was perfectly in tune when I picked it up again! Then I left it all night, and when I got up on the morning to play it was 90% still in tune! Amazing – all my new guitars and ukuleles have needed excessive tuning over the first week. I couldn’t be more impressed with this. I tried it with two different small practice amps and it sounds great with my admittedly small repertoire. ACCESSORIES. This guitar came with a lot of accessories. I didn't need the extra strings because I like to put these really light strings on my guitars to make the action easier, but it's great that it came with extras. The pics are your usual celluloid pics - they are fine, thin pics – I got 2 yellows, 2 pinks, and a green. I always put monster grips on my pics - pics are slippery. :) The strap is very nice. Soft. The color is great and it feels really strong and well made. Usually when I buy a guitar the first thing I do is hunt for a new strap, but I love this one. It's flexible in the look, in that it feels a bit Southwest to match the horse branding, but also is bright and even has something of a 70s vibe to it with the brown and orange, and fits my more tropical preference with all the orange. And it looks great with that colorful soundhole rosette, which might be my fave thing about this guitar… I love a nice rosette. The capo is simple, with a built in bridge peg puller -fine. The cable works, and the buffing cloth is a nice touch. I’m glad it didn’t include a tuner because I’m amassing a collection of those. It did come with sandpaper, I assume to sand the fret ends, but my ends were already smooth so I didn’t need it. And it came with a hex to adjust the neck, which I hope never to have to do. I thought, from the picture, it might come with an action measuring tool, though that is not listed in the description, and it does not. The case is super nice. It has a beautiful horse logo on it and an outside pocket. But the cool thing is that inside it has a Velcro strap to hold the guitar neck in place – what a great touch that none of my other cases have! And let me say again how well packed this was – fretboard cover paper, padding, bag in a box in a box. Nice job, Horse! FUN DISCOVERY: When I ordered this I didn't know what the square "silicon mute" was. It arrived and I was intrigued so I looked it up. I learned something new that makes me happy! This is for practicing the guitar without disturbing others. And it's awesome! I practice while my son plays his video games and I love that I can do it quietly and not disturb him, but still play normally. It mutes the strings, even if you strum normally – love it. I rely on Amazon reviews to do my shopping, so I like my reviews to really be honest. And I'll be honest... I hunted for something to criticize about this guitar and found nothing. Okay, my wife pointed out one small spot on the side of the case where the stitching got doubled up and is a bit odd (see photo). That's it. That's all I could find. I'm just so excited to play this, and I love the case so much that now I want to take my guitar somewhere just to use the case. :D FINAL WORDS: If you are looking for an entry level or intermediate hybrid guitar, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a more beautiful looking and sounding instrument anywhere near this price point. It's going to be one of my faves to both play and display. ... show more
