This Kuretake-Gansai Tambi Watercolour set is filled with traditional Japanese watercolours for professional artists and crafters alike. These extra large pans (4.5 x 2.5cm) are ideal for sketching, illustration, sumi-e, manga, calligraphy and more. The range includes a good selection of vivid colours with creamy consistencies.Apply a wet brush to the pans to activate the colours. Gansai pans may exhibit cracking due to extreme dryness or appear rough in texture due to tiny air bubbles, however neither of these traits affect their quality. These paints are BEAUTIFUL, pigmented, and easy to use! I've never used watercolor paint before, at least not since I was a young child playing with children's paints, and these are very intuitive to me. The paints are a little gummy, "gluey" if you will, which I've heard is a trait specific to Gansai paint. "Gansai" isn't a brand name or the name of the line these paints are sold in, but rather Gansai refers to a specific type of Japanese water-activated paints, which are made with things like natural gums, animal hide glue, starches, glycerin, honey, and/or sugar to bind the pigments together, rather than Western watercolors which are bound together usually only by Gum Arabic. Being bound the way that they are, Gansai paint tends to be thicker, "gluey"-er, and more opaque than Western watercolor. Some have called Gansai a hybrid between western style watercolor and gouache paint, which I can't verify because I don't have much experience with either, but I do think that this Gansai seems richer than the watercolor I remember from my childhood, and I like it very very much. Inside the lid of these paints' box is a blank chart where you can swatch your paints, so that you can easily check what they look like in use rather than needing to guess based on their darker in-pan appearances. On my swatches, I've used one coat of paint inside the shown rectangle, and two coats of paint inside only the squares shown, so that you can see how the paint builds up. My swatches were achieved after one brief dip of the brush into water, and from there directly into the pans of paint. Don't worry about putting your wet brush into the paint pans, because the pans dry fairly quickly, without any ill consequences from the water. The box of paint arrived in a regular brown Amazon bubble mailer, and they were completely fine, even with me having ordered one-day shipping which surely made the shipping process a little rougher on my package to get them to me quickly. There is one minor, almost invisible smudge on the box's lid, which I personally don't mind but know that some people may. I imagined it happened in the Amazon warehouse, but ultimately I can't know for sure. As for how these paints smell, I sadly can't say because I'm very sick with a head-cold at the moment and can't smell anything, but the paints are very pleasant to use and to look at, and are almost as good as medicine at helping me to feel better! Lol, these couldn't have come into my life at a better time. Finally, I'd like to address another reviewer's concern with the fact that these paints aren't vegan; Gansai paints are traditionally made using animal hide glue, which is acquired by boiling fish and animal skins to extract collagen for use in glue. There are vegan alternatives to Kuretake's "Tambi" line of Gansai paints, which use glycerin in place of animal hide glue, so if animal hide glue is a deal-breaker for you, there are alternatives available. I've also heard that gouache paints, which are bound with gum arabic, are a good alternative. Overall, I could not possibly be happier with these paints if I tried! Quality: They are very pigmented and easy to work with. When I used cheaper watercolors, the resulting painting would be covered in a chalky residue from the paints. The Kuretake watercolors do not leave residue, and the paint does not fade much over time. One gripe I have with this product is that when the paint is applied over another layer of paint, a dark ring of the color will appear on the edges of where the paint is applied. Usually, this is fixed with some blending, but it can be bothersome. Price: These are a great deal. As mentioned above, there can be some blending issues—however, for thirteen dollars, they mix new colors fairly well and they come in large pans, so they don’t run out easy. So far the only color I cannot create with these twelve colors is turquoise. Durability: The box the colors come in is not the sturdiest, but so far it has not broken or failed on me in any way. I travel with my watercolors, and none have broken in the box when I take them with me. Each color has its own individual tray, and they can be taken out with ease. I find this a great for convenience. For example, if an artist wanted to paint a tree outside and only needed red, green, and blue, each color pops out so they can be taken outside, without bringing the entire kit. ... show more

I love the colors here. I am not professional but at this stage, I tried so many brands! I can tell these are more vibrant and layer so well. If I could justify to buy the huge one, I will. I want even more colors! These were identified by an online artist. I’m not sure if they are student grade or professional- but they outdo any of the level I got at the craft store in level one or 2. I really see the hype of watercolor and filling in sketches now. I was using cheap paint and now I won’t- these are satisfying. I do recommend. ... show more

It was a gift, so I really can't speak for the person who received it, but I actually bought one for myself a while back and have been using the set a lot. It did take a bit to learn how to use it since it is not the same composition as European watercolors. Gansai Tambi is uniquely Japanese. I suggest looking at some U-tube videos for some explanations. I have no complaints...colors are bright and medium spreads nicely. Definitely used watercolor paper for best results. ... show more

You will never be disappointed with this watercolor set! New or experienced at watercolor, this is an affordable alternative to other big brands with a big price tag. I’d highly recommend. I’ve bought myself the larger palette a while back, and just got this one for my friend as a gift and we both love ours to death and use them frequently.     • Looking Forward to Working With These Watercolors!
I received mine within a few days of ordering and already love them. I was considering the larger set, but didn’t want to get bogged down with too many color choices, so this set was ultimately the best buy. I have just enough colors that are highly pigmented and beautiful. I love the box they come in and I love that you can take the pans out of the tray. I watched one review video that was hesitant about the 12 color set because of the colors’ mixablity (or lack thereof) but I would have to disagree so far. You can make a lot of great warms, cools, and neutrals from mixing only two colors together. ... show more

Fun set. Nice colors and they mix easily. Granulation is pleasantly more than I would have expected from a set like this. I have no idea if these are lightfast so I’ll be using these for quick sketches and such. Once empty I’ll fill with my artist quality paint. Really enjoying the oversized pans.
