This kit seemed to be decent quality. I am always concerned that 2 hinges are enough for a shadow box style gate, but these seemed to do well. Lay everything out with your lumber so you can see how it will go together, measure twice and cut once. The gate should be about 1.5" narrower than your opening width...this will allow 3/4" on each side for clearance of your posts. Don't make the gate the exact size of the opening, it won't work. Take your time so that you get it right. I drilled pilot holes during assembly and install so that there was no wood splitting, this is important as you will be very frustrated if you took the time to cut the wood and then split it out putting it together. It takes seconds to add a pilot hole first, just do it As I've learned from these kits, the screws they provide are trash and some will strip out almost guaranteed. I threw the included screws straight into the trash and used my own outdoor screws with a good bite on them and strong torx head for good grip to put everything together. Attaching the new gate to the post should really have 2 people or some kind of contraption to help you hold the gate in place and screw it into the post. I had some help fortunately. I got it screwed into the post, again with my own quality screws. Toy relief the hinges supported the weight pretty easily. This is about a 46" gate opening, enough to.drive my 42" deck riding mower through. Then I ttached a sold separate gate latch to the gate, again using pilot holes and my own screws. Everything operates, calling it done. I'll have two more gates to replace in the spring and will use this kit for both of them since it worked so well. ... show more

Really good product, strong and stable helps a lot and saves a lot of headache. There are reviews here that posted a picture and commented that the iron is not straight. It's not a problem once you put the screws in the right place and aligns!

I just built three gates using these, and it went fairly well. One more to go. I think the bracket set looks nice and complements the rustic rough-cut wood I used. The braces include extensions to which you screw your 2x lumber, and those provides much-needed additional strengthening. Unfortunately, this useful design feature requires one to build with 2x material, such as 2x4 for verticals, 2x6 for horizontals. If this is your plan, make sure you get very straight lumber and cut precise right angles. For greater torsion resistance and because I chose to sandwich PVC mesh to hide staples and edges, I chose to go with 1x6 and 1x4 with offset lap joints. You might see the problem here. The braces are designed to fit against the edges and ends of the lumber, and my offset lap joints get in the way. Again, this is not an issue if you go with standard 2x lumber. I ended up cutting off the bracket extensions and using the brackets more or less as designed. Also, because my rough-hewn lumber is close to 4" wide (versus 3.5" for kiln-dried store-bought lumber) I needed to cut off the hinges from their integral brackets and mount those separately. Again it does work, and requires a metal-cutting blade, a vise, some patience, and some spray paint touchup. Why go to this trouble? These brackets look the part, seem sturdy, and cost about a fifth of hinges and braced L brackets bought separately. A couple additional negs if you're using 1x lumber like I did: several of the pre-drilled mounting holes are difficult to use as designed, because they sit somewhat centered in the bracket, which means you must drive screws at angles to avoid putting a screw between your lumber. This issue is a non-issue if you use 2x4 or 2x6 lumber, as are the metal modifications. Certain pre-drilled mounting holes also are difficult to access as well, if you plan to attach mesh fencing with no edges showing (e.g., sandwiched). A couple sizes of screwdriver bit extensions help, and I also opted to use GRK torx screws to replace the supplied Philips screws that would otherwise likely strip out. ... show more

    • Effective but tricky to get perfect.
Purchased to make a door on my greenhouse. Very sturdy. Only a few glitches. There are a few weld "bumps" that will require you to round off the corresponding edges on your 2x4s, to get it to seat flush. Additionally, a couple of the welds aren't done at perfect right angles, but easily remedied by using a couple woodworking clamps to manipulate into position before driving the screws. The provided screws seem fine for using on the wider 2x4 surface, where depth is limited to 1.5", but I'd suggest using 2" exterior deck screws at the other locations. End result is a very sturdy door that doesn't sag at all..... You just need some basic handyman skills to get it perfect. Note:. For anyone else making a door, this set will leave a 3/4" open gap between the door & jamb on the hinge side. Fortunately, in my case, a thicker door stop trim on the interior will solve the issue. ... show more
