  • My Cadillac of Knee Scooters!
Style: Walker
I just had my 6th ankle surgery yesterday. I ordered this scooter before my surgery to compare with the el-cheapo scooter that I bought used from a friend and I used after surgery #5. I hated that thing. I have rented and purchased. Renting cost ~$200 per month. That calculates to: (6 weeks = 300)+(4 weeks = 200)+(6 weeks = 300)+(6 weeks = 300)+(el-cheapo = 75) = $1,175 I spent on scooters that had short turn radius, poor breaking and difficulty changing surfaces. I was fed up! I decided to buy this scooter and have a side by side comparison. All of my previous scooters were a rip off in comparison to the Knee Rover Hybrid (KRH). Of course, I had no idea I would have 6 surgeries over 7.5 years. Let’s talk about some qualities: KNEE IRRITATION: All knee scooters are going to make your knee sore. You can add padding but it will still hurt your knee. Our knees are not meant to carry our weight that way. Compare with crutches and maybe you will feel better about your knee. In my side by side comparison, my knee hurt dramatically less than the KRH compared to el-cheapo. ASSEMBLY: I am a 55 yo woman with a trick ankle. I could not have assembled this by myself because I can not get low enough to doe what is needed. My husband did the assembly. For him it was easy. This is why I gave assembly a 4. STEERING: the Knee Rover has amazing steering because the axle works like a car and it’s turning radius is amazing! I’m easily navigating around the house without picking it up by the handle bars or making 9-point turns just to corner a hall. I find it very easy to steer a set around with. El-cheapo will be donated as soon as we can set to the donation center! SURFACE CHANGES: We have tile and hardwood with a variety of rugs. ALL previous scooters required me to lift the front tires to change from a hard floor to a rug. Not the Knee Rover Hybrid. It takes these surface challenges beautifully and easily. Zero effort on me. WHEELS / TIRES: most scooters have wheels reminiscent of giant in-line skate wheels. Fine, but, once you know the difference between wheels and the tires on the Knee Rover, you will never go back to wheels again! The front tires did not come fully inflated. We have a bicycle pump so it was no big deal. If you order one of these, add a bike pump if you don’t already have one in the garage. TURNING / STABILITY: First, if you are using ANY knee scooter, you are using it because you were previously hurt. This is not a toy and you should be in control at all times. If you turn to sharp or are going too fast or are just getting used to your meds, you could get hurt on ANY scooter if you don’t stay in control. With that said, I am finding the Knee Rover to be stable, mostly because of the width of the front tires and 2 rear wheels. Also, I am not a cornering speed demon. It turns really well for me. BRAKING: This thing has real brakes. All of the other scooters I used had brakes similar to what you find on a wheel chair lock. You know, the piece of bent metal that pushes against the wheel to make it stop. Not here. These are real brakes and I find them very easy to operate and feel significantly more secure and in control than on any other scooter! SUMMARY: Yes, the price tag feels high at first. But you get what you pay for. Get it BEFORE surgery if you can so you can practice on it and get used to how to maneuver. I wish I had not wasted money over the years and had found this one first. ... show more

  • Just what I need
Style: Walker
I am scheduled for an ankle fusion in about a month. I will be non weight bearing on my right ankle for up to three months. I tried the economy model Knee Rover at the physical therapy office. I got my scooter now so I can get accustomed to it and make sure I have everything worked out before my surgery. I was very unsure about which model scooter to order, so I called Knee Rover’s customer service number. The operator took my number and said I would get a call back. I received a call from a very nice man in about an hour and a half. He was very patient and answered all of my questions. He recommended that I get the hybrid model because I have a loose gravel driveway with a slightly steep incline. I also need a scooter that has a single brake on the left side. All of the pictures I saw had the brake mounted on the right. The customer service agent assured me that it would be easy to take the brake lever off and shift it to the left handlebar. He told me that the park brake button would then be on the bottom, but would work fine. I changed it over and it does work fine. I never felt pressured to buy a more expensive scooter. The scooter was very easy to assemble. I watched a couple of YouTube videos and followed the directions. Now for the scooter itself. The tie rod turning mechanism is very stable. It is definitely worth the extra money. The economy scooter turned the whole front axle. That worked ok, but felt a little tippy when it was turned all the way. The big tires on the front handle our gravel driveway very well. I have wood floors with low pile area rugs in the house, and the scooter handles the transitions without any hesitation. I don’t even notice the change. Thresholds are also no problem. The only slight problem I have had is going over an extension cord that is in a safety channel. That is a pretty big bump and it slides a little on the floor. The back wheels hang up on it sometimes. I am going to reroute the cord over the top to get it out of the way. The turning radius is pretty wide. I asked the customer service agent about the turning radius and he said it is that way on purpose to preserve the stability of the scooter. When I am in a tight corner, I just stand on my good leg and lift the front a little to swing it over. That works very well. The brakes work very well. The parking brake holds the scooter in a stable position. I had no problems with it moving at all as I leaned on it from several different angles while making a tuna salad. The basket is very handy, but it is kind of small. A little bigger from front to back would be more useful. The knee cushion is quite firm. I haven’t decided if I will add extra padding. Overall, I am very pleased with my scooter. It is definitely better than crutches or a walker. The only thing it won’t handle is stairs. I will update my review after I have had my surgery. ... show more
