  • EXTREMELY SATISIFIED WITH THIS MIXER.
I've been using KitchenAid products for years now and to be frank, have not been dissatisfied with one of them. The 5 Quart Artisan 325 volt model being reviewed here is no exception. We have quite a few friends and relatives who use this same model and without exception all are delighted with this machine. It is dependable, reliable, mixes well and we personally have had no problems with ours what-so-ever. It does the job we pay it to do and does it well. Our mixer goes through very frequent and heavy duty use. Now there are a couple of things to note here: First, this machine is quite heavy. This puppy weighs 22 pounds without the attachment and full mixing bowl. This is not an appliance you can easily move from place to place in the kitchen. Along the same line, this is not a small machine my any means. It does indeed need at least 1 square foot of working space. It should also be noted that when the head is tilted back, it adds another approximate 3 inches to the height. This is important if you have cabinets built in over your counter top you work at. We are fortunate to have a built in specialty bake center in our kitchen which has been designed to accommodate appliances such as this. Second, I cannot emphasis enough the need to thoroughly read and reread the instructions that come with this mixer! I read the majority of reviews on this mixer and I note that a goodly number of the negative reviews stem from the fact that the instructions had not been read. Please refer to the number one review here by Kathleen. She gives a wonderful procedure for adjusting the mixing tool using a dime as a measurement device while adjusting the mixing functions. She is spot on and here method she shares works! In addition, we have found that the service department at KitchenAid to be extremely helpful, not only for this product, but others also. Third, there seems to be a raging argument going on here as to whether or not this is an American made product. This mixed has "Made In America" stamped all over it. The assembly plant is located in Greenville, Ohio. Now I have no doubt what so ever that many of the "parts" to this machine are indeed made in other countries, China being the primary source. Folks who read my reviews will know that I am something of a fanatic (Actually, you could say I am sort of possessed) as to buying products made only in the U.S. when ever possible. But on the same note, I am also rather pragmatic and a bit of a realist. I would strongly suspect that right now, if everything in your home and care that had parts made in another country would suddenly vanish, you would end up without one electronic or motor driven device that worked and you home would be a pile of rubble. I don't like this but have to accept the fact that that is just the way it is. Fifth, every now and then you will indeed run across a "lemon" with any manufactured product. I note in the reviews here that this has obviously happened to some folks with this particular machine. On the other hand the vast majority of reviewers here have had no problems (me included). To be honest, that is one of several reasons I ordered this mixer from Amazon - if I should have happened to have received one of these "lemons" I feel very comfortable with Amazon's return policy. I have used this policy before and have found it to be efficient and hassle free. Sixth, I note that the vast majority of negative reviews on this product date back several years. I note that the vast majority of newer reviews are all favorable. Perhaps KitchenAid was having problems at one time in the past. As far as the machine setting in our bake center as I write this, I have absolutely no complaints and am delighted. Seventh, I note that a number of the more negative reviews here reference machines that do not have the 325 Watt motor. I am not sure of the reason for this but I hardly think that a mixer with a smaller motor should be compared to this machine. Power makes a difference in this sort of appliance. Eighth, I note that many have compared this product to that of Hobart. Folks, I have no doubt what so ever that Hobart is probably a better machine. On the other hand I do not have the inclination or need for a mixer that runs into thousands of dollars. Granted, I am cheap, I admit that, but I simply cannot justify the cost of one of the high priced "professional" machines. Clean-up for this mixer is extremely easy. As I am the chief cleaner-upper in our household, this is important to me. The machine is quite simple to use - simple to the point that a small child could quite easily use it with minimal directions. This is an extremely attractive appliance and if we did not have an enclosed bake center, we would not hesitate to have this one setting on our counter top. Bottom line is that we are completely happy with this product. It does the job we paid for it to do. Others quite well may have had bad experiences with it, but ours have been all positive. • Eleven and a Half Years Later and Still Going Strong. Stellar Machine!
I purchased this 5-qt. KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer in December 2006. Eleven years and eight months later, mine is still going strong. Then and now, it is performing at top speeds as if brand new. To the delight of family and friends alike, over the past decade, I've made thousands of bread loaves, muffins, cakes, cookies, and other scrumptious baked treats. Hundred of pounds of meringue, whipped cream, bases, batters, and fillings. Countless sheets of fresh pasta. Endless bowls of dips, creams, frostings, and sauces. You name it, my mixer has done it and I still I LOVE it to this day! As a professional chef who has had the privilege of working in many high-end kitchens and patisseries with fancy equipment, I've used the industrial sized mixers that are as big as a horse and weigh tons. If the durability and capability of one of those behemoths could be equated to a domestic tabletop stand mixer, this machine is it - or at least my machine has been. Of course, it isn't surprising that my mixer has lasted this long since KitchenAid has a stellar reputation on its own. However let's be honest, part of the reason mine and others like it continue to perform without slowing down or without any hiccups is because I care for my machine at all times: before, during, and after each use. FOR EXAMPLE / TIPS FOR NOVICES: 1. When making bread dough, depending on how dense the bread will be, I measure out my recipe in two halves, mixing it in two separate batches so that the machine does not over exert, or over heat, and also so that my 5-qt. mixing bowl does not over flow. I personally love working with bread dough by hand so I almost always dump out the dough and finish kneading it by hand on my marble counter-top. Another important thing to consider is NOT to fill the mixing bowl so much that the dough creeps up the lip of the dough hook and eventually creeps far up the machine itself. This will inevitably happen when there is too much product being mixed inside the bowl at one time. 2. No matter what I'm intending to mix, I ALWAYS start at the "stir" speed setting and gradually increase THE speed in small increments. This allows ingredients inside the bowl to mix evenly, and uniformly. This also helps the wire whisk, flat-beater, or dough hook to efficiently work and mold around the ingredients inside the bowl. 3. I NEVER adjust my speed setting beyond speed 2 when making bread dough. This is one of the biggest mistakes anyone can make. If you don't remember anything else in my review, remember NOT to go past speed 2 when making bread dough. Your machine will overheat unnecessarily and this over time will aid in its early destruction. 4. Whenever possible and as warranted, I mix ingredients that are already at room temperature. Softened butter instead of frozen butter, for example. (Of course, if you are making whipped cream, the heavy cream should be ice cold, not warm) When my baked goods call for almonds, walnuts, peanuts, etc., I roughly chop them rather than adding them as whole pieces into my batter. Or better yet, I usually fold them into the batter by hand using a heavy duty spatula. Remember that your own hands are tools as well, use them when it makes sense. Yes, your mixer is meant to do the heavy work for you, but help it along the way. 5. I wash my mixing bowl and flat-beater/wire whisk/dough hook immediately after use; I also ALWAYS clean the surface of my machine with a soapy sponge, making sure to clean all dried or caked-on ingredients that splashed out onto the outside surface of the machine. I also always check all moving parts of the mixer, ensuring no ingredients have splattered into small grooves. Since my particular artisan mixer is textured grey (rather than the standard smooth gloss) and is a tilt head, I also check to ensure nothing is rusting, and I make extra certain that no parts are loose. With all the precautions I've taken over years, I'm still using all the original attachments that my mixer came with, including the original splash guard, plus, I thankfully have not had to replace any parts. Not even the delicate spring that is wrapped around the flat-beater prong. Years ago, I had thought of reviewing my mixer after using if for three years, then after five years, but reviewing it now after eleven years seems much more relevant and a better testament to it's quality. I can't vouch for other people's machines but mine is still top notch. No complaints and I absolutely love it. Money well invested that has paid for itself ten times over. Recommended. ... show more

  • A kitchen Appliance you will only buy once.
Absolutely a great Mixer, really well made and easy to use. Unlike so many small appliances this will be a one time purchase. Spend the money on this high quality mixer and you will pass it on to your kids. Controls and operation are straight forward and intuitive. I would strongly recommend adding the KitchenAide Shedder package for all sorts of additional usage of this great product. Packaging was great and the item is very well protected. Although not a criticism this is a serious appliance and weighs enough to warrant some thought as to where it will be stored, and how often it will be used. It is good looking enough to live out on the countertop but will take up a square foot of space. I am not paid nor do I receive and compensation for my reviews. ... show more
