  • Good for encouraging kids to read
Color: Rainbow Birds Cover
One of our kids got one as a gift and after seeing the independence that it gave him to read - we bought a second for our other child. They are easy to use, work well, battery life is good. The age recommendations for books is very simplistic and filters out tons of books. Searching for new books (not just taking the ones the algorithm gives you) is pretty difficult and time consuming. We tend to find book sat the library and share them with them. Once the free year is over I will be interested to see how much they actually use them. Be sure to wait and get them on sale. ... show more

  • Great for avid readers, but still room for improvement.
Color: Pink Cover
The Kindle Kids Edition is a perfect introduction to digital reading. It allows your avid reader to access electronic books without parental worry that they might go on a spending spree! Set up was fairly simple and similar to set up of the original Kindle. Upon turning on the device, you are prompted to sync the Kindle with a current Amazon Account. Once your Amazon Account is connected, you are brought to an Add Child Profile screen. This screen allows you to add multiple children to the device so that each can access and read their own preferred books. Once your child is loaded they are able to access Freetime Unlimited for 1 year without additional cost. Final set up before accessing the main page requires a parent password to lock your child out of your Amazon Kindle Account. This is a great feature that helps protect your account from single click purchasing and overspending! On the main screen in the child's account, there are multiple sections including Recent, Books You Might Like, Added For You, Characters and Themes, Discover, Top Picks, Popular Books, New Books, and On This Device. Each of these sections includes a variety of books with the option to view more. The recent section loads at the top of the page so your child can easily find books he or she has already accessed. One negative is the Added For You Section. These are books that parents are able to load from their account into their child's account. This is not on the main page and requires a swipe up. My daughter has commented that she wished these were at the top for easy access to new books she has asked for or we have purchased for her. There is also a search bar at the top of the Kids Kindle Screen which allows them to put in full titles or author's to search the unlimited books provided in Freetime. An alphabet pad pops up and the delay in typing is slightly annoying but it does the job. Moving back and forth between the kid's account and your personal account is easy. There are three dots located at the top right of the screen and one click provides the option to enter parental controls. Clicking this option prompts your password which moves you back to your main kindle account. From here, you can go to your home screen and access the Kindle Store. This is similar to the regular Kindle. It is linked to your account and you can purchase items with 1 click. While this should be a section your child can not access, in the event that he or she does get to your Kindle Account, I do wish there was an added password protection on the purchasing pages similar to Prime Movies when watching from your TV or personal device. While the purchasing option is easy, I did find moving these titles to my daughter's account to be more steps than I'd like. In order to do this, you need to access Freetime. On this page, before clicking your child's name, there is a pencil to the right. This next page allows you to add books from your account. You are also able to set daily goals, view progress, edit a profile, and delete a profile. When adding books, I did find that there was a lapse in carry over. I typically had to turn the kindle off and back on before seeing these books show up in her Added for You section. Not a huge deal but at first I thought I was doing something wrong as they were clicked as added in my account but not visible in hers. The additional feature I find great on the Kid's Kindle Edition is the Vocabulary Builder. Children are able to click a word and access the meaning of the word without losing their spot in the book they are reading. This is clearly helpful for your young reader who is building his or her vocabulary. Overall, I find this to be a great introduction to e-reading. Swiping through book pages is easy and my daughter loves that she can turn off the device and pick it back up on the page she left off on. Her only negative comment was that she wished there was some color. ... show more

  • Great for my 8 year old
Color: Rainbow Birds Cover
I was looking for something to substitute for her ipad (too many games, not enough education), This option is great for her reading skills. Hurrah!

  • Perfect for my 8yr old
Color: Space Station Cover
I can’t buy physical books fast enough for my 8yr old. He’s not a fan of the library bc he wants to keep books forever. He was very skeptical of a kindle and the possibility of “losing” books he loves but I showed him mine and he got excited. He loves it and we love it for him!

  • Perfect buy
Color: Pink Cover
Daughter loves it, and it works just as well as my paperwhite. I love that I can finally share kindle unlimited with my 11 year old, but I don’t have to worry about her having access to the books I read that aren’t for her age range.

  • Officially a Kindle Convert
Color: Blue Cover
This is the BEST. No more headaches from reading on my phone or the Fire. Though this is the kids version, 3 buttons turned that off and now it's simply a paperwhite. For the $40 Prime Day price tag its SUPER worth it. I highly recommend the paperwhite to anyone looking for the perfect accessory to their book collection ... show more

  • I’m not a kid, but I love this device!
Color: Space Station Cover
I bought this Kindle because it was cheaper than the “adult” version and I prefer the smaller size. It’s lightweight and very portable. It also comes with a cute case! The kid features can be turned off so that is basically functions like any normal Kindle. My only gripes are that the touch screen isn’t all that sensitive and the organization of books in your library could be better. But overall I’m really happy with this device and I’m glad that I went with this smaller version! ... show more
