  • More consistent than my Chemex
I was a big fan of my Chemex 6-cup carafe, but I was having issues with the filters getting clogged and slowing down the water flow. I tried different grinds sizes with my Hario Mini-Slim manual and even shaking the grinds through a mesh strainer to get out the fines, but it was getting difficult to achieve consistent results. It seemed like the way that most of the filter was directly up against flat glass was concentrating the water flow just through the bottom of the filter. I would have to lift up the filter mid-pour to help get it flowing again. A friend had picked up the Kalita Wave 155, and I loved the small durable & portable design, but the thing I noticed while testing it out is how smoothly water flowed through even using my same grinder. He ended up buying me one as a thank you for a favor I did, and I carried it back and forth between work and home. Then I finally saw the Wave Style and realized I hadn't used my Chemex at home in over a month. I like having a carafe to serve from at home, in case I have guests, but had obviously lost confidence in the Chemex, so I went for it and couldn't be happier. Thanks to the wavey design of the filters, it stays off the sides of the glass funnel, and allows for a good flow of water. So far I haven't to worry about the fines clogging it up at all. Plus if you happen to own the Chemex lid from Tanors, it still fits the Wave Style perfectly. The only issue I have with the Style is the extra parts. With the Chemex it's just the wood wrap handle, carafe, and filter, so at the end, you could just lift out the filter, pour your coffee, rinse and be done. Wave Style has a plastic wrap handle (can be removed, but it's a little tough), a glass filter holder, and a wire frame to keep the filter holder from touching the carafe. It's tough to get the filter out, so I usually just pull out the entire glass holder to dump the grinds, but I worry one day I'm going to drop that. It'd be nice if the frame and filter holder were one metal piece (for instance just remove the bottom from the Wave 185), or if the metal frame would hold the glass filter holder while you dumped out the filter. At any rate, I've become a big fan of the Kalita Wave system, and I've been really happy with the Wave Style. If you're a fan of the Chemex, or need to replace it, give the Style a try. ... show more

  • Catch a Wave and Hang Ten!
I have been roasting my own coffee beans and doing "craft" coffee brewing for years. I get excited about the latest and greatest innovations in the coffee preparation world, but try not to jump on the band wagon just because of hype. After weeks of research, I decided to try the Wave before I tried the Hario V60. I was especially drawn to this setup because of the all-in-one dripper and decanter. When you have a collection of coffee brewing devices like myself, simplification is sometimes a blessing! While I have not been able to completely exhaust and try every scenario possible (brown vs white filters), this Wave vs the metal 185, I can tell you that it definitely brews a better and more complex cup of coffee compared to a Melitta pour over, an Aeropress (I've tried dozens of prep methods with this thing), and a Capresso Coffeteam Therm! These are all of the devices I currently have and use, but not including the several that I have "archived" in storage. Since I am not new to the world of pour over coffee, there was very little learning curve with this device. I already have a top notch scale and a Bonavita goose neck variable kettle so I am able to get consistent bean weights, water temperature and pour control to reduce error. I am only three weeks in to my brewing process with this device and so far it has yet to let me down. My one concern is that since the dripper is glass and flat sided, does it produce a different cup compared to the metal Wave with "ribbed" sides? I'll have to make a purchase and find out! If you are considering this unit as your first in the world of pour over coffee, please do yourself a favor and skip it! Seriously, do not spend the money on this brewer until you know what you are doing and can confidently produce a consistent cup using other much cheaper pour over units (Melitta). Only then will you truly understand and appreciate the complexity of this brewer. ... show more

  • 1st cup is 100% sublime. One caveat to note...
After using this Kalita Wave-style carafe/brewer a few times I give it 4 stars because: Does it make the best coffee you can imagine? Yes. Is it beautiful? Yes. Does it clean easily? Yes. Is it reasonably sturdy for glass? Yes. Is it fairly priced for all the aforementioned? Yes. That 5th star eludes me because: Does it keep that 2nd cup of coffee hot for 5 minutes while you drink your 1st? No. You have a lukewarm cup awaiting you (note that I use barely-settled boiling water). I just think it would be relatively simple to make this unit double-walled for better insulation. I imagine those inclined to search and find the Kalita reputation for top-tier coffee, and who make that deal with themselves to lock into specialty filters, might pay a tad more for that double wall. So now I’m searching for yet another part of the system to pour into right away for insulation. That first cup tho? Seriously remarkable. BTW, if you're new to pour over, plan on tossing out your 1st batch or 2 till you've nailed your best timing and ground size, so might keep it to one cup to save your beans. ... show more

  • Nice pour over but small and pretty thin.
Nice little pour over. It's a little thin and unsubstantial. It is small. I made a 300 gram pot and the wave just held enough water for it so even though the carafe is capable of holding more the wave is a little too small to brew that much coffee. But I do like it however it'll just be for brewing a single, healthy sized cup of coffee. Also, there is no way this thing survived more than a few months never breaking but as long as the carafe doesn't break I'll be ready to purchase a plastic or metal wave replacement. ... show more

  • Pour over beginners must have
This is the perfect starter kit for pour over coffee. From the first cup I made the brew was delicious. It really showcases the flavor you are missing from a traditional drip coffee maker. Having the carafe paired to the dripper makes storage a lot easier. Only 1 slight complaint is the white color. Water gets trapped behind it when you rinse the carafe so it needs to be removed each time. Otherwise a perfect and reasonably priced solution ... show more
