  • Absolute time saver!
Being a bit on the perfectionist side of the scale, it irritates me when screws are not evenly spaced or placed consistently. This jig was a huge time saver! Not only did I finish the deck quickly, it looks great. The spacing for joints was enough to prevent splitting the board edge. The field screws were quick and easy. I have used it on a couple of other non deck projects with similar results. ... show more

  • Suggested worarounds
This tool accurately spaces deck boards if you want 1/4” gaps. It’s biggest design flaw is that the jig is only ~5 1/4” long. But most decking—both pressure-treated and composite—is 5 1/2” wide. If you put two screws in each new board, this results in screws that are not evenly spaced on either side of the joint. The jig allows some twist so it doesn’t always fall square to the joists. The holes are wide enough to easily allow jig removal after screws are inserted. Work-arounds that worked for me: I wanted narrower joint spacing so I filed the spacer fork tongs down to 7/32”. I used a square along the side of the jig to make sure the first couple of rows were square and centered on the joist. I only used the screw holes closest to the handle. For each new deck board, i initially place only a single screw—the one closest to the previously-installed board—per joist. I also placed the second screw in the previously-installed board. The screw hole in the jig farthest from the handle was used to align with the screw installed on the prior pass to make sure the jig wasn’t twisted. This meant that I installed two screws per joist for each new board: one in the previously installed board, and one in the new board. I used AZEK capped polymer decking fastened with Cap-Tor head cote screws. These screws have a reverse thread near the top and make an exceptionally clean hole. I installed them down to 1/2” then removed the jig and finished inserting the screws. Be careful when initially placing the screw to make sure it’s centered within the jig’s outsize screw hole. With these work-arounds I got evenly-spaced gaps and clean, straight screw lines. Scews are equally spaced on the deck boards on both sides of each joint. And that’s the basis for the 4-star rating. ... show more

  • Not the best tool in my toolbox
Not exactly what I expected. If you are screwing your decking boards without drilling first, then I guess this tool would be ok...maybe. Your screws are going to be at a slightly different distance from the sides of your deck boards if you are using 5/4 x 6 (1 x 5 1/2) decking. I am drilling all of the holes through the decking first, like should be done to hold the decking tight to the joists. I am going to try and modify the tool to where I can at least use it for drilling the holes evenly. There should be more than one picture of this product showing the top, bottom, side view, and dimensions of the holes to the spacer. ... show more

  • it's bit expensive for plastic, but worked very well for me
It does seem a bit on the costly side for plastic, but I am glad I purchased it. I am re-decking a 30' x 20' deck with real 5/4" x 6" treated pine and am about 2/3 done. This tool has enabled me to have very nice even straight lines on my screws regardless of which way I look at the installed boards, lengthwise or widthwise. Because my real wood is still wet / heavy with preservative, I did not want to put any gap between the boards as I know that once they dry out I will end up with a nice 1/8" - 1/4" gap from shrinkage. The legs on this tool are designed to slide down over the joist so you could put in a gap and mark two board at the same time. However, as I did not want a gap, I just used the guide on one board at a time by just sliding it up against the single board I was installing. I used a sharpie marker to mark the drill holes over 4-5 joists at a time, and then came back and pre-drilled my holes and screwed the board down. I also purchased and used the Bow Wrench - and I have a left a very positive review for that tool also. In the past I had used a straight edge to mark screw holes - I found this to be much faster and much more accurate to get correct and straight screw holes. ... show more

  • I’m still in there air
While these did a good job as a screw down jig, it’s def not the best tool for large jobs.

  • Great idea, but need size options
This is a great way to space deck boards and guarantee alignment of the deck screws. After experimenting, we decided to space the boards with 10 penny nails. Of course this is not the dimension set by the Jig-a-Deck. So took a sander and ground down the plastic forks to correspond to 10 penny nails ... then works fine, except since the spines are now not sloped it moves around a bit, but can be easily aligned with the other screws. Doesn't seem like much, but there is a big difference between 8 penny, 10 penny, 1/8 inch and 1/4 inch! ... show more

  • If you are looking to install wooden decking yourself, this tool is a huge time saver.
I am so glad I came across this tool. I ordered it and during the time I waited for it's arrival, I installed 7 out of 19 Rows in 2 days. When the jig came, my wife and I completed the balance of the rows (12 rows) in 1 day. Neither of us knew anything about installing decks! I also purchased the spacers to use with the jig. It found it necessary to have a decking board bender. I used the one from Cam. Nice and simple. ... show more
