Description

When you're ready to start your next oil painting, pick up Shiva pianistic artist colors instead of a brush. Manufactured in the united states, paintstiks are ideal for sketching and outlining, Shiva pianistic artist colors are refined linseed oil blended with a quality pigment and solidified into a convenient stick form. Paintstiks can be spread or blended and used in conjunction with conventional oil paint. There are no unpleasant odors or fumes, so you can virtually paint anywhere, at any time, on almost any surface from paper to panel to fabric. Paintstiks are “self-sealing”. That is, they form a protective film so the color won't rub off or dry out. Yet they always stay moist and fresh, providing an indefinite shelf life because they reseal in 24 hours. This film is easily removed by peeling it away with a paper towel, or rubbing it off gently. It can also be removed by carefully paring it with a knife (it can be sharpened to a point in this matter). When the stick has begun to wear to the edge of the sleeve, simply loosen the sleeve from the oil stick at the seam, open the sleeve and push the stick forward. Press the sleeve around the oil stick again and repeat the peeling process as needed. Remember that Shiva pianistic artist colors are oil color, the same as tube oils, so all the same techniques, mediums and surfaces can be used including varnishes. Paintstiks are available in 55 professional colors, 22 iridescent and 12 student colors.

I use these oil paint sticks for both drawing and painting, and what I like is the freedom that comes with knowing that their basically oil paint, and can be used on everything regular oil paint can be used on, without the mess, and without having to use those toxic mediums.

    • Not for those who want instantanoeus results; great if you're patient
These sticks are shorter and narrower than the "artists" style -- so, that means for me they were great to experiment with. The color run the gamut of the crayola 8-pack of crayons, with a few others to help blend for new colors. Might be me, but the blending was not as easy as seen on YouTube tutorials. These are HARD sticks (even after peeling off their skins). So, a palette knife (or something similar that bends and holds it hard shape) is an essential -- as are muscles and patience. The colors can be blended. Don't expect it to take just a minute. Once blended though, they work beautifully and depending on what method you use to apply them, they are beautiful and don't detract from the drape of the fabric. ... show more

I am new to oil painting, and I find that this is a great addition to any oil paint set. The application is very smooth and buttery, and they are so much fun to play with. You can also cut a small piece off and use a palette knife to mix with an oil medium, such as walnut oil (I use M. Graham Walnut Alkyd Medium) and it will come out just like regular oil paint! These are great to use on days when I want to do an oil painting, but am too lazy to get all my supplies out, so with these I can do a full oil painting very easily and quickly. these work well but are not as convenient as I expected. They are made of oil paint so with each use the film that covers the point needs to be removed and they take longer to dry than I expected.
