  • What a great design! Works as advertised!
Size: Standard(50-300hp) Style Name: No Fins
Shipping was fast. Installation was easy. I installed this on my boat, a 22' cuddy cabin with an OMC 4.3L V6 I/O. My boat idled almost 3mph (GPS speed) which is too fast for walleye fishing on Lake Erie. I previously dragged either a bucket or anchor sock to get the boat slowed. The drag from the ballast often pulled the autopilot off heading requiring more attention at the helm. With the EasyTroller trolling plate, the boat slowed to less than 1mph giving me the range in the troll speeds I use (1-2.5mph) The plate cuts prop efficiency, slowing the boat. This design doesn't interfere with directional control and autopilot response is much improved. I clamped the plate onto the outdrive, then drilled holes through the fin. I fastened the cord to a stainless steel L bracket that I attached at the back of the boat. A handle for the cord is not included so I appropriated a plastic handle from an old weed wacker. As a reminder that the trolling plate is down, I place a red sock over the throttle. This stays on the throttle when the plate is in the down position, even when the boat is on the trailer. My first time out with the EasyTroller, I forgot to set the plate in the up position before launching the boat and struggled for a second to figure out why I didn't have very much thrust as I was pulling away from the dock. With the sock, I've yet to have another mishap with the plate. This plate makes trolling much easier and faster to setup now that I don't have to deal with adding drag to the boat to get it slowed. Prop wash and cavitation interference appear near the surface on the fish finder but the effects begin to disappear below 5ft. ... show more

  • I'm excited to write this review
Size: Standard (50-300 HP) Style Name: With Fins
Received my Easy Troller on Wednesday 7/10/19 Installed it 7/13 Reason why I bought this product my 50Hp Merc Big Foot i just bought would only troll down to 3.5 to 3.8 MPH a bit fast for my style of trolling .Reading the reviews by previous posters had all the right answers 35 years as a Tool and Die maker I was impressed just how well this product is made. Sturdy great finish well thought of product. Installation took around 20 minutes simple, Drill a few clamps two 1/2 wrenches. Then the test at idle my boat was running 3.7 MPH . I pulled the cable the plate lowered just as designed and my speed dropped to 1.3 MPH I actually had to give it more throttle. Boat handling was perfect. When I was done trolling I pulled cable gave a little throttle the plate returned to where it belonged and off I went full speed . I bought the one 50 hp to 300 hp with the fins the price at the time was the same ... show more

  • Well Made, Easy to Install.
Size: Short (30-45 HP) Style Name: No Fins
This is a well made product, and works as advertised. It slowed my 16 foot boat low trolling speed from 3.8 to 1.6 mph. My only gripe is that it takes a lot of power to increase the trolling speed, and it adds a lot of drag at higher speeds. It took 4 mph off of my max speed. I am going to try to trim it down a bit since I only need a minimum trolling speed of 2.5 mph, and would like to get closer to my old max speed. Still a better choice than a kicker motor for me. ... show more

  • Great product! Excellent customer service!
Size: Standard (50-300 HP) Style Name: With Fins
I have a 21' bayliner capri with an I/0 240hp engine For years I primarily used it as a ski boat and to pull the kids tubing. I love to fish, but certainly could not troll with this boat. I decided to try the EasyTroller plate. It worked perfectly and I am thrilled to now be able to troll for Kokanee and Rainbow trout. Lowered troll speed from 2.5-3 mph to 1-1.5 mph. However, I did put the plate under unfair stress a couple times on the lake one day. I put it in the up position to move locations on the lake and hit it hard (24-30 mph) and made several sharp turns. The third time I did this, when I went to put it back in the down position to begin trolling, the lower section of the plate was just gone. The company responded quickly and professionally and sent me the parts to replace (lower plate and pins, no charge) and I was able to fix it myself. Now, when I want to use the boat for a day of skiing/tubing, I simply remove the four bolts and take the plate off - no problem! I would highly recommend this trolling plate and the company that sold it thru Amazon! ... show more

  • It works, but cumbersome to use.
Size: Standard(50-300hp) Style Name: No Fins
This seems built of strong aluminum and it does slow me down considerably. Without it, I get about 3.8 MPH at slowest speed on my Vovlo Penta 4.3GL. With it, I can slow it down to about 1.5. My trolling motor will hit 1.8, so I am now fully covered, with the Kamloop rainbows I target at 2.5-3MPH successfully now. So, it does what it is supposed to, but the spring and or design to pop it back up is cumbersome. It worked the first couple trips, but after that you have to trim up the out drive and manually pull up the plate with your hands. I imagine I will build a pole that aids, since water is getting cold now and I am not to keen on getting wet when air temps are in the 20s-30s and water temps 40s. Maybe I will contact the company for replacement, but it seems like a limitation in how the spring reacts. Ultimately this does work for what it is supposed to, but it does take some feathering of throttle to get the speed perfect. Gas usage is fine, but I am concerned with the noise and disturbance from my large motor is impacting fish. I use downriggers and boards, but still have the concern. So, I will likely shell out the extra expense and start to work towards a kicker motor depending on what I see through spring on this. ... show more

  • Happy Troller
A couple years ago I purchased another trolling plate that was made of some kind of plastic. Worked well untill I forgot about it and put the boat in revirse. At that point it flexed and was pulled into the prop snapping it off. Waisting 130 bucks. That will not happen with this unit. This is built with idiots in mind. Very sturdy and well built. If you forget to raise this one you just wont move fast. I know, cause I did it again first time out with this one. no problems what so ever. My engine is a big 5.7 at idle it was running at about 3.2 mph. With the Easy Troller dropped down to 1.3 actually had to add throttle. Very happy with this unit ... show more
