  • Great book
Very informative and well written book. Buy this book and save yourself some money on setups

  • Good book
Some of the information in this book is pretty basic but it does a good job of describing how to setup the neck and string action. It also includes some paper rules to measure the neck. Really useful guide.
Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2024 by This bridge worked perfectly on my Vantage bass. It is a bit large but it covered the cavity left by the original bridge. Worth the money, it’s fantastic.

  • Good info
This really is a helpful book for people who want to learn to set-up their own guitars (I don't understand why more people don't, it's not rocket science). But my only 'negative' is that there is a lot of duplication with this and Erlewine's earlier book the Complete Player Repair Guide. If I had to pick only one, I would pick this one. I found it more useful for what I wanted which was setting up electric guitars. The other one is probably better for people who aspire to becoming a guitar repair tech and need want to work on both acoustics and electrics. Also almost anything you can need to know is available on the Web. Ron Kirn has a great tutorial on how he builds a guitar (and many, many helpful posts on TDPRI) and smbstressfest has a good series on building an electric guitar on YouTube. But either of Erlewine's books are good investments if the topic of guitar repair and setup interest you and you want the information in a book format. ... show more

  • Awesome book!
I still can't play worth a darned but as a amateur luthier, my friends and family are amazed at how well I can make their "piece of junk" guitars sounds awesome with the skills learned in this book. I had a half-body Takamine acoustic and an off-brand electric guitar that were hard to play and made me want to quit with sore fingers. The electric had a bad buzz on the high-e string that would never go away and was ruining my score on RockSmith PS3. This book gave me the skills to solve the problems! Although the book is titled for "Electric Guitar", many of the tools and techniques are applicable to acoustics as well. Highly recommend for anyone who 'hates' their guitars action. One of my "junk" electric guitars (purchased from a pawn shop and restrung) was so hated by friends and family for it's every-string-is-different height, action and playability that I almost threw it away. I used the techniques in this book and spent an afternoon completely re-tuned, corrected the intonation and re-strung it, adjusted the action and now that "junk" guitar is the go-to instrument for anyone who visits and wants to play! This book is a must-have for every guitarist! ... show more

  • An amazing bargain. If you want to set up your guitar, this is the book to buy.
I have been playing guitar for about 26 years at this point and have always wanted to know how to set up my guitars. It costs at least $40 to have it professionally done, but the thorough information in this book should be enough. Actually, way more than enough. A lot of other information is covered in this book, including Dan Erlewine's opinions on bridges, tremolos, how to evaluate a new guitar for damage and what needs to be done in a set up, and a lot more. The book even includes a DVD and pop out cardboard radius gauges to help with setup! For just over $20 new! I've been a fan of StewMac(Stewart MacDonald) for a long time. Dan Erlewine has written books for them and specializes in new product development, including designing new guitar tools. He's a definite master luthier, and his opinions are objective, formed through years of hands on experience. His writing style is also easy to follow, and there are good diagrams and photos to illustrate what he's talking about. I've done some work on guitars before including refinishing a guitar, rewiring a 1965 Fender Mustang, adjusting bridge heights and truss rods, but this book makes me realize how much more there is to know. I can't wait to use this information to set up my 60s Silvertone Jupiter and Harmony Bobkat. ... show more

  • My "Desert Island" Guitar Tuneup Book
A GREAT book that provides complete, solid, easy to understand guidance while you are messing with your guitar. It covers all kinds of issues in good, but not excessive detail. I have spent a few hours trying various fixes on old beat up guitars first, and nicer ones as I got some confidence, and every session seems to result in a better sound from the guitar I am working on. I have one guitar that I bought new, which was not set up by the box store it came from, and has always sounded worse than my $50 craigslist specials. Each repair session with the guitar and Mr Erlewine's book seems to upgrade the sound noticeably, and finally I can say that it sounds pretty decent. I have two other books on guitars which sometimes come in handy, but if I could only choose one of them, Dan's book would be the one I would immediately choose. I, and my guitars, thank you Mr. Erlewine. ... show more

  • Cut is incorrectly labeled
The neck radius cutout tools at the back of the book are mislabeled. The 7.5" is actually 10" and vice versa. You can see from the photos that more light shines through the arc of the incorrectly labeled 10" than on the one incorrectly labeled 7.25". I compared all the cutout sides with the same light test both on my desk and on the fretboard of my 12" radius Strat neck. It's very hard to tell the difference between the 9.5" radius cutout and the 10" cutout (and I don't have any guitar necks in those sizes to test them on), but as far as I can tell the are correctly labeled. ... show more
