Description

From Law Roach, award-winning celebrity stylist and the world’s only image architect, comes a groundbreaking guide to becoming your ultimate, confident self. Law Roach is the mastermind behind looks that have broken the Internet time and again—from Zendaya at the Met Gala to Anya Taylor-Joy at the Golden Globes, from Lewis Hamilton’s iconic streetwear to Céline Dion’s style renaissance. Nobody knows better than Law how to turn an outfit into a moment of fashion history. In a little over a decade, he’s gone from industry outsider to the most celebrated name in style, having been honored two consecutive years with the Hollywood Reporter’s prestigious Stylist of the Year award and receiving the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s inaugural Stylist Award in 2022. Now, for the first time ever, Law shares the secrets of his approach. With How to Build a Fashion Icon, he takes readers behind the scenes of his process and journey, revealing his tips, tricks, and most memorable styling moments to show readers how to live their most iconic and fashionable lives. Part self-help guide, part manifesto, this book guides readers step-by-step through that process, and along the way, Law weaves in personal anecdotes—from his childhood in the Southside of Chicago to the first time he styled Zendaya—with practical exercises to help readers cultivate the most essential feature of iconic style: confidence. • love it
arrived on time, in great condition. the advice is a little trite in places, but to be fair, there's only so much you can say to strangers en masse about confidence. i'd have loved pictures of the clothes law talks about wearing, in addition to the pictures of zendaya, but i get why zendaya is considered the safer bet. the book is great and i highly recommend it. ... show more

Law Roach takes us along on a mesmerizing journey through fashion to an ever evolving destination of unshakable confidence. He writes with a direct kindness, practicality and generosity I am changed by reading. Wow.

  • Expected more from the book
I was looking forward for reading this book but I couldn’t finish it. The book could have been written in few chapters and repeating the same concept over the chapters was redundant. Personally I did not learn anything new from it. I hope it just the first book that always is experimental and author’s future works will be better. ... show more

  • This Book Did What Needed to Be Done (IYKYK)
5 stars To quote the author, Law Roach "did what needed to be done" in this mash up of personal experiences, celebrity interactions, devotion to fashion, and boosted confidence. The nature of his public facing persona makes it difficult at times to think of Law Roach as independent from the people he dresses. Fans might know him because they know Zendaya always looks AMAZING and that he is responsible for this, for example. But there's a lot more to Law Roach than just a keen eye for fashion, an appreciation for distinct bodies (I was surprised in a good way by how he treats this subject both for himself and for his clients), and an understanding of his own talents. He comes through in this book with what was, for me, a totally unexpected motif: the importance of building confidence. I realized quickly that an incoming bias I had was that someone in this line of work would have very strong and maybe somewhat catty opinions about how bodies should look, and Law Roach reveals multiple instances in which he defies this notion. If he can appreciate your body and genuinely urge you to do the same, I think we must all listen and behave accordingly. Yes, it's fun to learn about his relationship to the famous folks he dresses, particularly his lengthy and charming tie to Zendaya, but Law Roach brings forward so much more here. I hope we get coffee table books, style guides, and many other kinds of content, but I have to say that I'm pleasantly surprised by the charm of this more straightforward effort, too. Law Roach is a true individual and an icon in his own right, and it turns out he has some pretty solid life advice, too. Crack this one immediately to learn more about that. ... show more

  • Uplifting!
A confidence booster, a builder- and frankly, a mirror. Although I am older, I can still see myself in Law, and I find his description of childhood quite familiar. Including the good and the not good. So, his book is a somewhat cathartic experience for me, and I don’t mind recalling certain aspects of my life as I read about his. I know how far I’ve come despite the odds, and I’m glad to have more guidance. What’s more, it is gratifying to read- and witness- in real time how far Law has come and where he’s going next! ... show more

  • Such a GENEROUS book!
I nearly forgot how much I ADORE and ADMIRE Law Roach… until I saw his hilarious IG reel hinting that a book was soon coming! I pre ordered the audio (with that infamous patient textured voice - I’d recognize in a dark room!) and am about to grab the hard copy as well! Law is such a generous, calming soul yet so fierce and calculated when it comes to style! This book is so good for the SPIRIT - as he reminds us all that we are nothing more than a confidence workout (or two, or ten) away from those fashion icons we admire. He holds the door open in an arena that is often gate kept and instills in us that we too are supposed to shine. I’m so grateful to Law (AND Zendaya for sharing her brother with us) for being vulnerable and strong in fashion and in life! ... show more

  • I was expecting way too much...
I thought this book was to give pointers on looking great from a celebrity stylist, but I all I heard was how he name dropped celebrities and how he made them look great. I pre ordered the book via Audible. Roach isn't the best orator when reading his book and I must say I was highly disappointed. Roach is not meant to teach...just show ... show more
