Description

Anguished young lovers, fallen women, wanted criminals, and all manner of social castoffs: these are the disreputable denizens of the Hôtel du Nord, an atmospherically seedy boardinghouse on the bustling banks of the Canal Saint- Martin in Paris, whose lives collide in Marcel Carné’s bittersweet rhapsody of romance, betrayal, revelry, and violence. Featuring evocative production design by the famed Alexandre Trauner and a colorful ensemble cast of some of classical French cinema’s most illustrious stars—including Annabella, Louis Jouvet, and a divinely dissolute Arletty in one of her most iconic roles—poetic-realist jewel Hôtel du Nord is a sublime exemplar of Carné’s celebrated poetic realism, imbuing working-class lives and dramas with a touching nobility. • A haunting portrait of French life in Paris on the eve of World War II.
I'm a lifelong journalist who has written a lot about film over the years and only recently discovered that I had never seen Carne's Hotel du Nord. Since Criterion was releasing this wonderful Bluray version with lots of "extras," I was eager to buy a copy. And I want to recommend it to others, now. First, the "extras" are fascinating: One that I found especially helpful included extended excerpts from "newsreels" of the era that show France and Britain and Germany on the verge of war. Then, other documentary extras looked behind the scenes at how faithfully the production team recreated this little slice of a "neighborhood" canal-side street for the movie. In recent years, the original Hotel du Nord has been preserved as something of a minor national landmark in France, even though none of the film was shot on the actual street or at the real hotel. Everything was recreated to give the camera crew complete access to this cramped neighborhood for the duration of the production. I think that's a key aspect of this film to think about, because it's easy to steer clear of this movie if you learn that it opens with a young couple preparing to commit suicide in the hotel. This can seem like an incredible "downer" of a movie. However, I've now fallen in love with this film as an optimistic affirmation of life, produced on the eve of the cataclysm of World War II. What's so astonishing about the film is its hopefulness, despite the grim aspects of this tale. I was not alone in immediately recalling another classic I love from the '30s, Grand Hotel. People come. People go. Lives intersect, interact for a time and then these lives go on. That's the stated theme of Grand Hotel. The same is true here. I want to encourage other movie lovers to give this a shot. I'm delighted with it and I'm sure that I'll pull this off the shelf and likely watch it again in coming months. ... show more

  • A Truly French Classic Of 1930's Cinema!
While many Americans may not be familiar with Marcel Carné's Hôtel du Nord (1938) it is certainly a classic of the golden age of French cinema, and definitely worth knowing. The wild story of two suicidal lovers and the denizens of a sketchy Parisian boarding house enhanced with a touch of trademark French poetic realism is bit dark, but also very funny and entertaining- romantic even. Not as dark or violent as the director's gritty Port of Shadows, nor does the devil show up like in Les Visiteurs du Soir, but a bit creepier than the masterful operatic romance of Children Of Paradise. The always charming Arletty steals the film with her role as a hilariously malapropism prone street walker, though the entire cast gives the film its "at-mos-phere". The Criterion Collection Blu Ray picture looks very well restored and contains several interviews and documentaries on the director's career and making of the film. Also recommended Port Of Shadows, Pepé le Moko, Le Jour Se Lève. ... show more

  • An excellent film that I had never heard of before.
It is a French film and really draws you into the human stories of the characters involved. I didn’t know exactly what to expect when I ordered the film but I am very glad I did. Excellent on many levels.

  • Print is quite ordinary.
A very good film by Marcel Carne from 1938. Well worth seeing, but the Blu ray does not have a picture in anything resembling sharp register. Thus, the price seems excessive.

  • The best version of Marcel Carnes masterpiece of poetic realism released to date
This is the best version of Marcel Carnes masterpiece of poetic realism released to date. Hotel du Nord is the second release in his trilogy of ‘poetic realist’ films, including ‘Port of Shadows’ and ‘Daybreak’. It has less of the film noir tropes of the other two films in the trilogy as well as more of an ensemble feel as it explores many of the periphery characters in and around the hotel. Technically, this disc is superb. The video quality is much improved over my dvd copy which was not bad to begin with. The darker areas as well as the greyscale are are well defined and have lost the murkiness that was just inevitable with a lower resolution source. The most important part is that this blu-ray looks awesome on my 4k tv lol. The audio in the lossless French track is much healthier than on my dvd version as well with a more robust sound and without the crackle, hiss and fluctuations that plagues earlier releases of this title. The Criterion edition of Hotel du Nord is a must buy if you do not already have this masterwork of early French cinema in your library or if you would like a much improved version over every previous release. ... show more
