TL;DR: This is a great kit if you or someone you know wants to get started drawing, or if you're looking for a portable set. More experienced artists probably already have all these tools, if not better versions, but everything in here works and is of decent quality. You get a lot with this kit, including the roll-up holder it all comes in, and everything works/is pretty decent. You get a variety of drawing pencils, watercolor pencils, charcoal pencils, blenders, that metal holder thingy that comes with blenders that I still don't know how to use, a regular eraser, a kneaded eraser, a pencil sharpener, a flat brush, a water brush, and a craft knife. I tested them all out, as you can see in the pics. (Blending is not my forte, but you can at least see that it works!) For the watercolor pencil test (the last picture), I did a dry swatch and a wet swatch for each color, using the water brush to wet them. (The test was just done in a regular sketchbook, not one meant for watercolor.) The water brush doesn't come open, as far as I can tell, and the way you fill it is just holding it under the tap, bristles up. Then squeeze it when using it to get the water going. It's not the best water brush I've used, but it works. I also tested out the craft knife, which is retractable and worked well to cut through paper. Both erasers worked well, and so did the sharpener, which I used to sharpen the charcoal pencils. The kneaded eraser's difficult to get back into its loop once you've taken the plastic off of it, and I don't know why the strap on the outside of the holder has an extra snap at the end. (What is it for?!) The regular eraser and the sharpener also share a loop, and I would have expected them to each have their own loop. But also, they seem to stay in place well, so maybe there's a reason for it. These are tiny gripes and are my only complaints. This is a great starter set that's also really portable, and I recommend it to anyone who wants to get started with drawing. ... show more

I grabbed this to use as an "on the go" sketching set when I travel. It has just about everything you need to really get started with good pieces of art. The pencils are good quality, and you get a good variety of them. The included watercolor color pencils are actually really good quality! The pigments are rich, and adding just a little bit of water to them and they really come to life. It also comes with plenty of other tools to use for blending, erasing, and sharpening your other tools. Perfect starter kit for any budding artist. ... show more

I enjoyed trying this HOTCOLOR Drawing Pencils 38pcs Art Supplies set! The water color pencils are cheery muted shades. I colored up both wet and dry samples so you can see how both look (in the pic I shared). I wouldn’t use these without wetting them if I wanted vibrant color but they are quite nice and muted. Not bad at all. The watercolor paintbrush didn’t leak and held a reasonably good point. The pencil variety is terrific, loved that. Was so pleased to find the little sharpener (it was tucked under the elastic band so well I couldn’t see it there! The smudging stumps worked well with the three types of charcoal pencil. The regular paintbrush is flat tip not pointed like in the photo.:/ I was a little annoyed with this but it’s good for filling in color quickly so meh-ok. I got this to keep for on the go to entertain some middle graders whom I love. The travel water paintbrush is wonderful for on the go!! Biggest disappointment: The roll up case it’s all kept in is NOT proper cotton canvas. It’s a strange plastic-ish stuff that stinks of weird plastic stuff. Ugh. I’ll air it out, should be fine. This is a pretty terrific set otherwise. I wouldn’t spend much on it but it is a good starter or travel kit! I hope my photos and review help you make the best choice for your art supply needs! It seems like a good idea and comes with lots of stuff, but really none of it is all that good. The pencils are fine. The eraser is ok. The watercolor pencils are meh at best. I didn't expect those to be top quality for the price. But the roll that holds everything is the worst part. It's the thing that makes this set look cool in an online picture, but in reality it's a cheap vinyl/plastic canvas stuff that smells of chemicals, bordered by cheap fake vinyl/plastic leather-like material. It's just not nice to have nearby. It took me a while at first to figure out where the weird smell was coming from at my desk. That was two weeks ago and it still smells of chemical and still doesn't feel like anything quality. Better to keep everything in cheap box or pay up for something made of actual canvas and/or leather. This thing is functional, but unpleasant. ... show more

I like the way this rolls up, but when you snap the strap, there's a curios tail extending (photo 1). The only other use I could find for the strap snaps was to make a loop for hanging (photo 2). There are four snap pieces, and I cannot figure out what use to make of some of them. This rollup case, like some others I've seen, has elastic for holding the erasers and sharpener. Since the plastic eraser and sharpener share a strap, they tend to fall out. And while the kneaded eraser fits snugly while new, I know that it will shrink over time and the elastic will no longer hold it. Why don't they make a pouch to hold such things? The graphite and watercolor pencils work fine, but I found the charcoal pencils unsatisfactory. The charcoal is inconsistent, and even the soft one has hard spots in it. ... show more
