I've purchased a couple of toy trains now for Christmas for my grandkids. This one has plastic clips that keep the tracks aligned and joined so it can easily run on carpet around the Christmas tree. It has lots of smoke and would appear to be more durable given the amount of metal versus plastic used on the train. It can also be changed into several different configurations with lots of track. The track and train are easy for a child to assemble. The train looks great as it runs emitting realistic smoke. Having a rechargeable feature is excellent, otherwise batteries get exhausted fast. The remote is slow so that a child tends to give up on it. The train jumps the track too easily and rerailing the whole thing gets tedious. The major problem for me was that one straight was missing so the children could not build the interesting layout advertised for this level of train set. There is a learning curve to getting the train to associate with the controller. Forward reverse control is a good feature. Lot less track than the less expensive version without remote an uses a Lithium battery. Grand son thoroughly enjoyed playing with both.

Good value, trains are all metal and the steam feature works great and is a nice addition. The tracks are pretty easy to assemble for adults, but probably not for children under 7 or 8 as you have to put on small plastic clips to keep tracks from separating. You also have to be careful when putting the train on the tracks. If its not on perfectly, the train either wont run at all or wont run well. This can also be tricky for little ones. Also, its easy to knock the train off the tracks turning it on and off as it has not remote control. This can be frustrating for little ones (like my 4 yo). Basically, its a great train and can be used with smaller kids, they just need help. ... show more

Nice, well-built authentic looking train. Great price. The train works well and stays on track. The remote is a cheaply made device and pushing the buttons in correct sequence is confusing. The worst design part is the track side clips, they are too small and popoff. Already lost a few in the carpet, they don't provide any spares. I'll probably paint the clips 'orange' so I can find them. Overall, too complicated for under 5yr old, a nice train for older child 5yrs and up. I'd recommend it, 4 stars. ... show more
