  • You must understand that it is only Chapter 1
I don't think this film gets enough credit; perhaps there's a gap in expectation. Granted there are places where it can be melodramatic. The dialogue in certain scenes are a bit lengthy but in a way that doesn't lack for weight. The characters are less complex than they are extremely vivid, which I suspect will change as new chapters are added and the canvas is rolled out more completely. While the film does run long, you're only just being introduced and that's made clear throughout and at the end of the film. The circumstances are unflinchingly brutal and the setting cold and endless. You and the characters are left in the great wide open, completely isolated and cocooned in despair. Horizon is a hearty mix of the westward expansion dream trope intertwined with the stark reality of peril and an often failing struggle for survival. What may result from the multiple chapters of Horizon is a completely new way of telling a story. You just couldn't do this justice in a 2 hour run time. I'd guess that the production team's goal was to immerse the viewer to a new depth of experience. For my part, I'll be patient and hope that Costner's vision for this story is as grand as it's priming up to be. Either way I'm very much looking forward to seeing it played out, and hope and pray it doesn't become some kind of sanctimonious lecture from a continuously preachy Hollywood. From what I've seen so far, I think not. If Dances With Wolves gave us one or two evocative dimensions about the 19th century West, Horizon promises to go much further, and to do so with as much purpose. It's curious to see how Costner and the production team have been at odds with the industry. I could care less if the film makes a dime, the art so far has been self-redeeming. ... show more

  • Awsome movie
I missed the movie when it came out on theatres. I was reluctant to purchase but, I’m kostner fan so i purchased it. I was dissapointed. Definitely recommend it. I hope he decides to move forward with next chapter.

  • A potentially good movie
This is one of those movies that covers several times and locations and had to knit it together. You know this because the promotional videos say so, not so much from the movie itself. It might have worked better if Costner had someone narrate the movie, maybe in part from the Apache and in part from the settlers. He could have filled in details that take too long to explain on film. You almost need clearly defined 'Chapters'. He could probably recut the movie and do a voice over narration and re-release it to make the story unravel smoother. Not sure what happened at the end of the movie without narration. When you have to go to Wikipedia to read the plot, you know the movie failed somewhere. Fortunately the price was cheap to rent it. ... show more

  • better than expected
I liked the stories, quality and videography of the movie. I got about 1/4 into it and restarted, this helped me get a better understanding of what the story was. It follows several families through their journey westward, this is why I was having difficulty following at first. I was expecting something more like Dances With Wolves, or 1883 which followed 1 family or tribe, but Horizon follows several different families and stories. You have to pay attention, trust me and back it up or restart and you'll understand it better. We watched it twice and enjoyed it much better the 2nd time. I wish we had bought it rather than rent as I know I'll want to rewatch Chapter 1 again before chapter 2 comes out. ... show more

  • Great start to a series of films
Hoping for the next 2 chapters to be released soon I'm almost gonna have to watch the first one again so I can catch up, they are taking to long to release the others and that sucks, but all and all great film and good job Kevin!!

  • I appreciate the art of sharing history!
I found the vantage point in every scene to be as intimate as possible. The viewer decides how to feel in each turn of life of that time and realizing every character's limited resources to self preservation.

  • Beautifully Shot, Poorly Edited
Costner is a master when it comes to capturing shots in western films. Horizon is no exception. This movie fails in the storyline. This movie jumps from pre-Civil War to somewhere during the Civil War. It never explicitly says this, but there are clues throughout the movie which the viewer should not have to figure out on their own. Following several plot lines, Horizon does not explain how, or whether, these paths will ever merge. Trying to tell multiple divergent stories, Horizon fails across all plot lines as too much information is missing and the viewer never gets to know any characters well enough to care what happens to them. The last five minutes lost Horizon its third star, as it inexplicably goes into an unexplained montage of random scenes which I can only assume is a poorly inserted trailer for the 2nd Chapter. When Horizon came out, I hated that I missed it in theatres as I assumed that like Dances With Wolves, there are some movies that are just better on the big screen. Having now seen it at rental prices by streaming, I did not miss anything. I will likely watch the 2nd Chapter, but if it appears anything like the 1st Chapter I will wait for streaming. ... show more

  • They spent some money on this, but it ain't no "The Postman"
Unlike 98% of hollyweird I actually like ole Kevin. He seems like a pretty good dude that ain't into that puffy stuff if you catch my drift. So I support him and his work. The cinematography is right up there with Dune. Really cool period correct scenes, but the switching back in forth between characters and different time periods got a little confusing. Since I have 1/16th warrior Cherokee blood in my veins, I can appreciate the Apache and their fight against the invading pale faces. I'm not one of "those" people that use the word colonist... I just appreciate the historically correct context of both sides. Costner is definitely a learned man that actually reads books. Nice. Hopefully Chapter 2/3/4? will be better once they're past this "setting the stage" part. But again, it's no Waterworld. Speaking of that classic gem... Costner if you're reading this we want another Postman and another Waterworld. Call netflix, it would make a mint. ... show more
