The pics show install on top of bed frame which creates a gap under the mattress. Several others complained about this and added books or blanket in the gap to keep their mattress from sagging. We installed it under the frame and added zip ties for extra security. So far so good. Also, we had to raise the bed frame one notch to allow some room to lower the bar. Highly recommend! I had to install it a little differently than instructed however. When installed directly under the mattress, you can totally feel the bars underneath and it was very uncomfortable. I raised my son's crib frame up one level and then installed the bars under the frame rather than over it. Now he can't feel the bars at all and it still works perfectly. It is solid, secure and isn't budging. My son rolls around in his sleep and this keeps him from falling out of bed yet leaves enough space at the ends to get out of bed safely by himself. Assembling the rail was not entirely intuitive, but the instructions were helpful in completing setup. When assembled, it's surprisingly difficult to open the rail on its hinges, as if the cloth part resists the rail being lowered. This could be intentional, but it feels like something was put together wrong, even though it appears to be correct. The locks don't easily pop into place when the rail is returned to the up position - usually one or both have to be pushed a little to help them into the slots. Installing the rail, as others have mentioned, presents an issue: the round bars caused massive lumps in the mattress, so much so that either end of the mattress would push down under a small amount of pressure (note: the mattress is a rather expensive Simmons Crib mattress). I opted to move the mattress up one position and install the crib rails on the underside of the spring frame, using strong zip ties to hold the crib rail tight to the frame at the front and the provided hardware to hold it at the back (pictured). Regarding the design, a decent strength flat strip of metal instead of the round metal tubes would prevent this issue. With that said, the crib rail seems to be fairly high quality and decently built. I'm confident it was a good choice, it's just not perfect in design. Our little one would not sleep in his crib until my husband took the front of it off. I guess he felt as though he was caged in and that was not going to work for him. So, my husband took off the front and applied the Hiccapop Toddler Bed Rail; we haven't had sleep this good since his birth 13-months ago...yes, he slept with us. He now sleeps in his room, in his bed without any fussing and crying all through the night. Sometimes he gets out of his bed on his own and crawls into our room, but at least we know that he isn't rolling off the bed and hitting the floor in the middle of the night hurting himself. ... show more

If you're like my family and have a toddler is ready for a bed but seems to do cartwheels in her sleep you are probably looking for a rail to keep her from falling out. I first tried to find the rail that actually went with the bed, but not only could I not find the one the wooden crib rails were all around $100. Not wanting to pay that much for something I'm only going to need for about a year I went looking on Amazon for an alternative. This rail by hiccapop is great! Not only is it much cheaper than the wooden rails I actually like how it functions better. You can put it in the middle of the bed, as opposed to the wooden rails that have to be screwed into a side. My toddler can get out either end she chooses. I also like that this rail comes with a lever system so you can actually fold the rail down. Also it appears to be more comfortable than a wooden rail would be as I often find my toddler's head against it when I peak in. The only thing I don't like about the rail is that it has these metal bars to help it stay in place that go under the mattress. It seems like this might make sleeping uncomfortable, although my toddler hasn't complained. Due to this I gave it only 4 stars. If there was a way you could attach these bars to the bottom I think it would be a better design. Otherwise, this rail is perfect. ... show more

    • GREAT PURCHASE FOR OUR TODDLER!

Our sleep trainer recommended this for our 2-year old that just recently began climbing out of his crib (boo!) and moved up to a toddler bed. The rail piece that came with the toddler bed was very short and would provide more coverage she said. Well, we were apprehensive especially my husband who was worried about the bars under the mattress being uncomfortable for our "big" kid. Turns out he LOVES it and so do we. It makes him feel more secure (like his crib) but he can get out of bed easily still which makes him feel like a big boy.     • Fairly Easy To Install - Extremely Hard to Lower

We purchased this because the actual wooden rails for our convertible crib (Sorrelle Vista Elite with Changer) are sold out everywhere online (now that Toys R Us is out of business). They're also $125! So we opted for this. It works good. It's somewhat tricky to put together. The instructions take some studying. But after a bit it made sense. It's straight-forward on how to install on the frame of the bed. The issue is LOWERING the guard. It's almost impossible. I still haven't been able to do it. You have to pull up on both sides simultaneously but the tricky part is there's nothing to weigh the guard down as you do this so the entire mattress pulls up with it. You have to have an adult sitting on the mattress to put the correct torque/force on the rail to "lift it" out of the secure locking hinge. Very tricky. It's good for safety and security as there's no way that rail is lowering on it's own, but it's difficult to use. ... show more

I loved the idea of this, but I returned it right away. When I went to install it, the mattress no longer sits flush with the crib mattress platform and the mattress is floating with no support. Was very disappointed.
