Description

Laying the foundation for a worry-free data center, HGST delivers capacity to conquer the data explosion – Ultrastar He12 HDD. Designed to handle workloads up to 550TB per year, the Ultrastar He12 HDD is the industry’s first 12TB drive and uses PMR technology to make it drop-in ready for any enterprise- capacity application or environment. The stable internal environment created by fourth-generation HelioSeal technology enables a new 8-disk design, increasing the capacity by 20% when compared to the 7-disk design of the prior generation. This highest capacity helium drive offers the lowest power profile in the industry to help data center architects meet eco-environmental goals and requirements. Targeted at 2.5M hours MTBF, the Ultrastar He12 HDD provides the highest reliability rating available of all HDDs on the market today by building on the successful design of its 10TB, 8TB and 6TB predecessors. Trust HGST and the Ultrastar He12 HDD to deliver more capacity, more efficiency, more reliability and more value to your data center. This drive includes a “Power Disable” feature which allows the host system to easily power cycle the drive to perform a hard reset. Ensure that your system will support this feature.

  • Working fine in Synology NAS
I bought a pair of 12TB refurbished drives without the power-down feature. The drives arrive in good condition and were exactly as described. One drive has about 33K hours on it. The other has about 39K hours of use. It's important to understand that you are buying used drives that were likely pulled from a data center server. There's nothing wrong with drives that have a reasonable amount of spin time on them as long as they were installed in a properly cooled environment as most professional data centers have. I ran SMART tests on both drives and both passed with no errors or problems. The bottom line is that I got two used drives for the price of one new one. That's a fair deal as long as you understand what you're buying. However, I strongly recommend you only use these in a 1+1 Synology SHR or standard RAID-5 setup to protect your data against a single drive failure. ... show more

  • Great value for Synology NAS, average age was under 3 years 30 power cycles, as described, Great!
Got 2 of these to backup in RAID 1 a 923+, running fine, not too loud, and box came with warranty information, card noting 5 year warranty, so should be good. Price is good and 5 year warranty is better than the 2 year warranty of the manufacturer recertified drives off serverpartdeals, and much cheaper, so all in all, just make sure you keep the warranty info and are using it only for NAS with redundancy and USB backups. Smart status returns no issues, power on time and power cycle have not been reset (unlike manufacturer recertified drives). ... show more

  • Works perfectly
My main concern was packaging and this drive was packaged perfectly. I'm very happy with its SMART test results. I've heard people complain about noise but I can barely notice it.

  • Make sure your Mobo or external drive bay is able to read "Power Disable" drives.
Good price to value. Make sure you check the hard drive health with any of those free bootable utilities before using. Better to send and replace the drive sooner than later. Thankfully mine (I ordered 2), has passed all the checks, though the life time being up and running made my jaw drop but then I remembered that these are data center drives, not consumer drive. So it was meant to be ran 24/7. So I look at it this way, if it was able to survive this long on a enterprise setting and passed on a health check, on a consumer level usage which will be less strenuous so by the time EOL of the drive, it'll be like as if I bought a retail consumer quality drive. BTW after format, you'll loose almost 1.8 GB of space. Not the fault of the drive maker, it's just how it is. Food for thought. FYI if your mobo doesn't take power disable drive, they do include a sata power connector that hooks up to your current connector to make the computer see the drive. ... show more

  • Works great. Requires adapter cable. Included
I did need the power cable adaptor to make the hard drive work. That was the only thing I didn’t like about the drive.

  • No write speeds posted ANYWHERE
Raid 10 setup with 4 drives. Max write speeds around 35mb Max read over 200mb Day one. So far so good. It's a hardware raid so if any failures happen I'll post (3/1/24)

  • Excellent Drives
I have been using Ultrastar drives in my NAS for years and the drives get a ton of use. I do eventually change them out for larger size but between that they get years of use without a single hiccup. I would recommend these to anyone who wants a dependable drive where you can install and forget. Unpaid review. ... show more
