Buy with confidence & worry free HGST Ultrastar HE8 delivers the hermetically sealed, helium hard drive, the Ultrastar He8 for massive scale-out environment. Why does helium make a difference? Helium has only one-seventh the density of air. Replacing air with helium inside a hard drive dramatically reduces the turbulence caused by the spinning disks, cuts power consumption and results in a lower temperature within the disk drive. The reduction in turbulence for the spinning disk allows HGST to deliver a seven-disk design in a traditiol 3. 5- inch form factor. In addition to being the world’s first helium-filled hard drive, HGST Ultrastar He6 is also the first hard drive in the industry to o er a 6-terabyte capacity. This design provides a 50 Percent capacity gain and still reduces the energy needed to run the drive by up to 23 Percent. HelioSeal Delivers Twice the Capacity Using One-Quarter Less Power One-third more capacity and 23 Percent lower energy consumption. Available today. That’s the power of helium. Delivering the industry’s leading capacity at 8TB, Ultrastar He8 is based on the widely accepted and proven HelioSeal platform. HelioSeal technology replaces air with helium inside the drive, reducing air turbulence and ebling 7Stac, a seven- disk design in a traditiol 3. 5- inch form factor. Ultrastar He8 goes beyond what any air-based HDD can do and seamlessly integrates into virtually any mainstream enterprise environment. Cooler and quieter with industry-leading power efficiency (Watts/TB) and no-compromise performance, the Ultrastar He8 lays

  • Refurbished enterprise > new consumer
I have had terrible, terrible luck with a major brand of hard drives that is seemingly always on the deepest discount during sales -- I won't name names but let's say "water fence" -- so to replace these crappy drives as they inevitably fail, I started looking into refurbished enterprise-grade drives, thinking the higher build quality might offset the fact that they're used. I have yet to be disappointed by HGST; I have bought a few now, and while they do show runtime in their logs, they also show excellent performance qualities, too. They are simply built to a higher standard than the drives that will no longer tempt me every Black Friday. If you are curious, I'd say it's worth the risk, as I've got at least 4 of these things running now with no trouble or even warning signs whatsoever. ... show more

  • Great deal
I have purchased 3 of these, 2 of which have been in moderate use for about a year. No issues so far, which is great, but I have not had to use the warranty and can't comment on the process. I will update this review if one of the drives fail. The hours on the drives were as advertised, with all the right around the 35k mark. They are a bit louder than a consumer drive, but if you're buying an enterprise-grade drive, you probably know that already (or at least do now :-). ... show more

  • Durable Drives but more on time than advertised
These drives are extremely well made. HGST focused on reliability, something many drive manufacturers today seem unfamiliar with. They are not quite as fast at short transfers or transferring lots of small files as newer models, but I have been using two of these drives for several years. On transfers of video files between two of these drives, I see a sustained 140MB/sec. They are not very quiet, and they take a bit to spin up after being idle for a while, but otherwise good drives. Lost one star for my one complaint which is that of the 3 that I have purchased, 2 had 5 years of on time, though only about 50 power cycles. ... show more

  • Not only a great drive, but a great warranty
I've ordered about 26 of these drives over the last couple of years. They have been fantastic in a Raid 6 moderate usage environment with low noise and reasonable heat generation (per spec). I have only had one drive fail in the 2 years, so had an opportunity to see whether the RMA process was going to be straightforward or painful. I'm pleased to report that (so far) it has been seamless. They asked for the drive details and the order, responded quickly with an RMA number and have been very responsive. I will likely buy more as time goes on. Very good deal and outstanding service. ... show more

  • Dissapointed!
I purchased this hard drive knowing that it was used (from a data center). I figured with a 5 year warranty and having HGST drives from 10 years ago still running great this would be a reasonable alternative to a new drive. I am very disappointed. The drive failed to work straight out of the box. I could hear a 'thud' noise as it was trying to initialize and run. I ran crystal disk info which gave the yellow 'caution' due to reallocated sectors count (see photo). Attempting to use Disc Management, it would not allow me to partition or format the drive. The drive was well packaged so I don't think it was damaged during shipping. I am disappointed that the drive would be sold with known problems. Either the data center would have known it was bad or the seller should have verified it's functionality before shipping it as a 'renewed' working drive. ... show more

  • Making a lot of noise
I think the HD is dying, and it started making noise just after 1 month. I might have had bad luck, I'll order again; it is a cheap experience

  • Still working after 2 years
I purchased 5 of these drives in December of 2022, almost 2 full years have gone by and not a problem with any of the drives has occurred. They were all installed in a Windows based media server and are operating 24/7. If you are looking for a reliable, high capacity drive, I highly recommend these, as they are a pretty good value for the money ... show more
