  • Runs great, powerful, quiet!
The media could not be loaded. I got the 12 HP. I put gear oil in the lower unit. You must do this. Many bad reviews are due to ignorance of outboard engine setup. I ran the motor with 32:1 gas at low idle for 30 min, then 1/4 speed for 30 minutes in a trash can at home. It took 15 pulls to get the gas primed up, but then it ran good. The next day we took it on my 1442 jon boat to the river. I am following the tohatsu break in guidelines: 30 min low idle 30 min 1/4 > idle 2nd hour half throttle or lower with 1 minutes full throttle every 10. 3rd and 4th hours 2 min full throttle every 10 minutes and 3/4 throttle. After 8 hours run it like you stole it After the first tank of gas mixed at 32:1 use 50:1 fuel ratio. My engine came with a 6.3 gallon gas tank and nice long hose. It came with a tool kit 2 extra nice looking spark plugs, an emergency rope starter, and an extra water impeller and lower unit gasket. This engine seems to push the boat around a bit faster than my game fisher 9.9hp. I had thought the 12hp rating might be an exaggeration, but I'm convinced that it is true after testing. The good: 1. After my initial startup, this thing started on 1 easy half pull of the rope. Even on our first river run, it started with the slightest pull of the rope. 2. The engine came with a gas tank. A nicer tank than I expected. And a really nice fuel line and bulb. It uses the same connector as my OMC motors. 3. It came with extra spark plugs, emergency tool kit and water impeller and gasket. 4. Full English manual. My manual is detailed and all English. No other languages. 5. It's QUIET!! Way quieter than any of my other outboards in a long time. Gonna be great for birding on the river. 6. It ran good. 7. The stickers peel off really easy. I plan to put my own graphic on the cowling, and the stickers came right off. The BAD 1. The number one thing I don't like is there is no off switch. You must yank the kill switch out to stop the engine. You could choke it out if you wanted, but then you run risk of flooding the engine. This will be an easy thing to add, with little effort, but it is a bit annoying that it is this way. 2. You can't lock the engine in a downward position. It's as if the motor is always in shallow mode, where it lifts up if in high thrust reverse. This isn't too bad or even an issue in regular use, but I like the motor to be locked in place in my application, and it rides better on the trailer that way. (No bouncing around) 3. Some parts seem a bit fragile compared to major brands. The mount screw handles are light feeling plastic. The engine mount seems a bit light. The pull handle light weight. I can see these things breaking in a season of rough handling, but, none of these things are a big deal to replace. The money you save is way worth a few chincy fittings. I'm thrilled with the engine. I believe it will last me for a while after taking the proper care to break it in properly. See the video of my daughter running it around. ... show more

  • Runs great, love it
Our motor came right on time, well packaged. Directions made sense, and we got it on our boat and ready to run, no problem. Runs great, gets us up the river where we wanted to go, starts easy. No complaints at all.

  • JUNK
Do not buy it’s not worth the money if the seller returns my money I will take back the review. It has not ran since day 1 it left me stranded on the lake and had to swim with the boat back.

  • Great deal and customer service
Four starts for the engine but customer service of this seller made it a 5 start product. The engine wasn’t issue free. The first week or so and 10 hours break in process was flawless. You have to read the manual for this, fill lower unit with good gear oil and run at reduced speed up to full throttle over 10 hours. Failure to do so will mean a failed engine. Now on to the issues after break in the engine started to run funny then it died. Nothing could get it to start. Luckily a buddy works for a marina was able to get mechanic to look at it for me. Turns out it was the CDI ignition system or kill switch grounding it out. Anyway I contacted seller and they promptly stood behind their product. They offered to send a replacement for exchange or maybe pay for parts and repairs. Knowing the hassle of sending this thing back and also not wanting to run engine in limp mode for another 10 hour break in period I had them speak to mechanic. They worked it out and two days later I was back in business. Some will have you believe the engine should have no problems at 10 hours but growing up on the water I have seen plenty of big name outboards destroy themselves before this mark too. They are not Mercury or Johnson quality but it runs on second pull every time. Pushes my little 16 ft soft inflatable at 15 mph. We were on lake today for about 8 hours and not one issue. My brother bought his the same time as me and we usually meet on the lake with our boats together after about 30 hours, he has no issues. I would say this is a great deal for the price point and even better customer service. ... show more
