  • So simple to install, even a plumber can do it!
Color: Coffee Material Type: Polyester Blend
Not a good pic since it was taken for something else but you get the idea. This blind set was well-packaged with 4-7' sections of uni-strut run along the inside of the long sides of the box to prevent damage. Everything arrived safely in 2 boxes. I ordered the blind to be installed with the motor in front, on the left side with a leftside stack. To mount the motor in front, use the 2nd set of holes on the brackets(4 provided, each with 2-bolt-on sections). When they are in your hand, this will make sense. Instructions are illustrations, few words but the install could not have gone easier, even for someone who doesn't do this kind of stuff well. I HATE anything "wood" related. We don't get along. Plumbing, concrete.....no prob but replacing deck boards causes me angst(lol). This blind set was up in an hour...only b/c I'm so slow and didn't want to damage anything. I mounted the brackets directly above and resting on the casing and bam, snapped the blind rail into place. Well designed wide plate system allows you to actually screw in the screws while holding the bracket! They even provided a separate extension cord getting me to the floor-mounted receptacle! Overall......I ordered this on 12/11 or 12, Afterward, Customer service reached out to confirm and question each part of my order....THANK GOD they did! They saved me from making a mistake AND they even built mine different than what is offered on their listing. They were very accommodating and friendly! it arrived 1 month from my original order date after being fabricated to my specifications, on the other side of the Earth, I'm good with that! Operation "out of the box" is nearly perfect with only the open/close buttons on the remote being backwards. One-Touch open or close. This is some James Bond stuff. When already open with the slats slanted, touching "close" will cause the slats to square up, then the stack will slide till closed then automatically close the slats. Moves quietly and smoothly and the slats don't sway when it's moving!!! Much faster than my wireless window shade b/c it's plug-in and not battery, and it's just as smooth! I really like this blind, the quality of the slats, the operation and even how they designed the install- it was well thought-out and made to be simple. The talented level of PROACTIVE Customer Service added a lot of value as well. FYI- my order was roughly 470 bucks for this blind with the options I selected, not cheap but absolutely worth it! ... show more

  • Great Blinds; Great Value; Great Customer Service
Color: Coffee Material Type: Polyester Blend
I ordered two automated vertical blinds, each blind spanning 8' wide windows, and I am very happy with the result. From date of my order through Amazon to receiving the blinds at my home took a little less than three weeks. The blinds arrived with all parts needed to install. I also ordered and received a multi-blind remote control which works flawlessly allowing me to control both blinds simultaneously or singularly. The customer service was as good as I've ever had with an on-line order. Graywind company reps, through e-mail exchanges, assisted me in determining measurements for the blinds and later, installation of the blinds. The email exchanges were dynamic with the norm being "24 hour or less turn-a-round" for answers to my questions. The emails were clear and easy to understand. Once I started installing the blinds Graywind guidance was more important than ever. With their "24 hour turn-a-round or less" answers to my emails the installation of both blinds went smoothly. The timeliness of the responses to my questions was not guaranteed in their ad that I saw and never stated in an email but it was the key aspect of the company/customer relationship that fostered my confidence that Graywind was ensuring I got what I wanted and what I got worked as I expected. If there were any surprises in this entire transaction from ordering to finished installation the surprises were always very positive ones. Bottom line: I got exactly what I wanted, installed them easily, and it was a very reasonable price. By the way, I had never installed a blind before. When I need blinds again, I will certainly get them from Graywind! ... show more

  • overall nice shade but with some minor issues
Color: Dimout Waffle White Material Type: 2 - Hardwired Smart Motor
Overall nice product and nice shade but with some issues. There are very few consumer options for fully automated AC powered motors that integrate with Alexa over wifi. If you have nearby AC power, this is a huge upgrade over battery powered shades. Main complaint-- Valence fascia shows wrinkles from the factory. Installing the fascia is difficult since fabric is bonded to a plastic backer with adhesive at the edges that prevents sliding into the track or adjustment. The plastic backer telegraphs wrinkles and waves no matter how much effort you spend flattening it into the track. This is particularly visible at night under room lighting. If you experience this problem, the solution is to strip the fabric from the rigid backing tape and then adhere it directly to the valence track using 3M Super 77 Spray adhesive (special glue that won't wet or alter fabric color). Major installation consideration-- If you have a large fixture that is center opening, expect the rod to arrive in two pieces. I highly recommend hanging the halves separately and joining them at the center only after both halves are clipped into the wall brackets. The center attachment is plastic and any bending or flex while jostling into place will surely damage it and the gears it protects. Also, don't forget the small metal drive shaft insert when securing the two halves. Color/texture tips-- The waffle pattern is probably closest in texture to a traditional old school cloth vertical. I recommend you order the sample pack and blue tape samples to your glass so you can see what they look like backlit. I found the beige in the sample pack to be unexpectedly yellow when backlit. We opted for weighted bottoms which are performing without movement in close proximity to floor vents with a 1" gap to the floor. Sizing considerations-- When ordering, they tell you that the total stack is 1/6 the total width, with half on each side if it is center opening. On my large fixture (183" wide), the actual stack exceeded 1/6 by 6". I should have added 1/6 + 6" to my total width. If width is mission critical to avoid obstructing your views, confirm suggested width + stack with customer service. If you order outside mount, the height you specify is bang on what is shipped. Brackets clamp over top of fixture with the top of bracket approx 1/4" above fixture height when planning bracket mount location. Bracket mounting holes are awkwardly placed near the corner and inside the reinforced web. Access to fasteners is challenging. I normally like to use hex head sheet metal screws as they do not strip out but there is not enough space with these brackets. I would recommend using a good stud finder and mounting these brackets into studs instead of the included sheet rock anchors that are prone to pull-out. When mounting, you must press the backside of the rod into a spring loaded plastic clip and then rotate the front up into the cleat. This force alone could tear out weak drywall anchors. Installation will require a minimum of two people. Packaging-- The vanes themselves are rolled up and were perfectly straight after installation with the weighted ends. They came with weights and chains already attached. They still need to be manually clipped into the fixture. With a large fixture, it is helpful to have a helper hold the cluster of vanes up off the floor to reduce the weight while the installer clips each vane one at a time. They included two spares that were not secured with the beads at the bottom. Do not accidentally clip in one of the spares or you will make a lot of extra work for yourself. Operation-- the blind is not as smart as I'd have hoped but there are some work-arounds. In the Gray Wind app, rotation is assigned a value 0-100 with 50 being perpendicular at 90 degrees to the glass and 0 or 100 flat (parallel) to the glass. The fixture motor does not automatically return to what should be the default vane rotation of 50 (perpendicular to glass) before opening or closing. Whether using the remote or the app, the blind will stupidly close or open in whatever rotation the vanes were left in. This potentially can bind up the plastic gears and permanently damage the blind if it is opened or closed with the vanes rotated fully flat (0 or 100). I would have expected a smart vertical to automatically return rotation to 50 before safely shifting the motor to open or close. The remote has arrows for open, arrows for close, an arrow to rotate clockwise, and arrow to rotate counter clockwise, and pause buttons. Since it does not return to 50 by default, you must hit the correct rotation arrow and then manually hit pause when it looks about perpendicular to the glass. Expect to fumble with these buttons. Then you can hit the desired close or open button. The simple act of opening or closing the fixture will take a minimum of 3 button presses on the remote. Automation-- For automation, you need to install the Gray Wind app on your phone. The app walks you through the process to pair the fixture. Plug it in and use a pencil to press the Select 2 button on the motor for 5 seconds until the blue light blinks indicating pairing mode. If you have separate SSIDs for 2.4 and 5ghz, make sure your phone is on the same SSID as your 2.4ghz devices. Input the login for your home network and the fixture is now paired to the Gray Wind app. Go into Alexa and add/enable the Gray Wind Skill. You can do the same for Google Home. Immediately you will notice that the Gray Wind app has the same limitations as the remote. It has a button for open and a button for close. If pressing these buttons in the app results in the reverse of what you are expecting, i.e., pressing close actually opens the shade, click the 3 ellipses and change the setting on motor direction to backwards. I had this issue with my center opening shade with motor on right side. These controls are one size fits all. I suspect if you have the motor on the left side, it may work with the default direction. If you have a motor on the right, you need to specify the motor direction as backwards. These buttons will stupidly open or close the blind regardless of the vane position. Closing or opening a vertical when the vanes are flat to the glass risks damage to the plastic gears and the motor. As a work around, you can create scenes for open blind and close blind. Click scenes and the + button. Select if button option then select then control blind. Name the scene something different than the name you gave the fixture to prevent confusion in Alexa voice. I named the fixture livingroom blind. I named my scenes "close blind" and "open blind." You will want to program and name the scene "close blind" to include the following routine-- rotate 50, action close, motor direction back (if motor is on right hand side of fixture), + time delay 25s (time how long it takes you specific fixture to close), action rotate 0 (or 100 if you prefer). Test the scene to make sure it works correctly. If it is taking forever for your delayed rotation, confirm you zeroed out the minutes column which has a default of 1 before adding seconds. The time delay of 25s was for a 183" wide fixture. Time your fixture closing and replace the 25s with your result. Follow the same steps to program a scene for "open blind" with the following routine-- rotate 50, + time delay 5 seconds (to allow it to rotate fully before triggering opening motor), open, motor direction back (right hand motor mount). You may need to go into the Alexa app and disable/re-enable the Gray Wind skill in order for Alexa to add the new routines to its library. Operation using Alexa Voice is not intuitive. If you simply say "Alexa open [name assigned to the device in the Gray Wind App, e.g., Livingroom Blind]," it will open with no regard for vane rotation risking damage to the blind. The same is true for vocal close command. If you say "Alexa rotate 50 [name assigned to the device in the Gray Wind App, e.g., Livingroom Blind]" it will say function not supported. I tried using set value and other words to indicate rotation but none worked. I recommend using custom scenes to control basic functions. In order to execute a Gray Wind scene in Alexa, you need to add the word "run" to your verbal phrase. In my case, I have two scenes: "open blind" and "close blind." The voice command for operation is "Alexa, run open blind" or "Alexa, run close blind." This does work. You can label this as needed but you want words that are distinct enough to avoid Alexa confusing them. You also want names for the scenes that are distinct from whatever name you gave the blind as a device when you added it to the Gray Wind app. It is possible to create weather triggered scenes in the Gray Wind app. For example, you can configure the blinds to close 2 hours before sunset on a condition of sunny weather. This of course is driven by cloud based data so what it actually does may depend on whatever weather service they use to pull data from. I will note too that it misidentifies my city based on automated location services. Note that time of sunset assumes no terrain so your local sunset may require an offset if you are trying to program the blinds to re-open automatically after sunset. If Gray Wind is reading this, hopefully they can implement improvements to streamline install and operation of this device. I suspect that the motor and controls build on a platform for roller shades which is why the operation of the vane position in concert with opening and closing seems like an afterthought. ... show more
