  • The perfect choice for my small studio, my high expectations and my limited budget
The media could not be loaded. I recently added the Godox SL100D to the SL60W and SL60Bi that have been the workhorses in my small studio. I’ve been very happy with the 60 Watt Godox COB lights but chose the 100-Watt version to give me more options, such as for three-light portrait applications. As may be obvious the SL100D is a daylight, not a bi-color model. For use in my studio, I prefer a daylight color temperature baseline. And the SL100D provides that very accurately. Occasionally, of course, for creative reasons I’ll deliberately mix color temperatures, or employ RGB lights. And, as a bonus, the SL100D came with a very useful set of color gels that add some of those creative possibilities. But 5600K is my studio standard. If your work takes you to client locations, or other situations where you must match your lighting to existing fluorescents, or other sources, you might consider investing another $50 to get the SL100Bi. Otherwise, go for the combination of great performance and low cost, and grab an SL100D. The Godox SL series have proven to be reliable workhorses that are easy to control, whether from the back panel or by remote control. And, speaking of remote control, the SL100D can easily be controlled via the Godox light app on your phone, selecting which light is on, adjusting output level, and even controlling the 8 onboard special effects. But it now also comes with the RC-A6 remote control that was, previously, an optional accessory! Making quick adjustments to lighting in my studio has never been easier. Godox has always provided me with dependable lighting solutions. I like that I can depend upon the SL100D to provide accurate color rendition, an important feature when dealing with skin tones or for product photography. Another major plus, each of the Godox SL-series lights features a Bowens mount for compatibility with all my soft boxes, beauty dishes and strip boxes. The SL series lights are, as the prefix might indicate, designed to be studio lights. The Godox SL100D does not offer a battery option; it is AC-only but comes with a 15-foot heavy-duty AC Cord. The power cord simply plugs into a standard IEC connector on the back of the light. There’s no bulky power brick to have to deal with! I appreciate the simple AC powering for lights I plan to leave in the studio. Some have been critical of the stand adapter’s vertical rotation clutch mechanism which uses both a handle, to tighten or loosen the swivel action, and interlocking teeth to prevent unwanted slipping. I really like this design, as forward-heavy soft boxes can exert significant torque, but the combination of the locking teeth and the leverage offered by the handle eliminates concern over a light suddenly drooping and crashing to the floor. A feature I am glad to see is the umbrella mount integrated into the handle, something that is not provided in the 60W models. Another difference is in the plastic cover that attaches over the COB panel at the front of the light when transporting. The cap supplied with the SL100D is deeper than that provided with the 60W models. I’m assuming that is to keep plastic farther from a hot COB, should the light be stowed away immediately after use, before being allowed to cool. While the shallower depth of the caps on the front of the 60W models might make storing/transporting them a little easier, these are, again, studio lights. Mine will almost always be on stands, and only occasionally put on a shelf. So the different depths are not a concern. The SL100D is also a little longer than the 60W models which, again, might be a factor if being put in a road case, and no case is supplied. But these are… you guessed it, studio lights. I use the SL60W, SL60Bi and the newly added SL100D more for still photography than for video, some for portraiture, mostly, though, products, food and still life. But it is still important that the noise generated by the internal cooling fans not be heard in the soundtrack when creating videos. I’ll admit there are quieter fans on some LED lights. But I’ll also add that I seldom have trouble keeping the fan noise from being noticeable in my voice track. I attribute this to attention to just a few factors. First, I don’t use a light any closer to the mic than necessary to do the job. Second, I almost always have a softbox between the fan and the talent’s microphone. Third, I have my studio surfaces treated to avoid reflecting sound. Fourth, I ensure that mic placement is as close to the talker’s voice as practical, so that the voice has a chance to be so much louder than any ambient noise that the noise is not discerned or can simply be eliminated in my video editor. Finally, a word about construction quality. I have to say that I have been more than satisfied with the build quality of all my Godox products. Sometimes I think I’ve been overly concerned about whether parts of a product are metal or plastic. I’ve learned that a reputable manufacturer will typically use one or the other for a number of good reasons. It is also true that "plastic” is no longer the pejorative that it used to be. Shoot, some of the finest sports cars have plastic bodies. The truth is I often have trouble determining if some parts are metal or some sort of composite. My experience has been that Godox chooses to employ specific materials based on what best meets the requirements for such things as weight, durability, thermal properties and cost effectiveness, and I’ve come to appreciate their balance of construction quality, performance and value. There are, of course, good reasons to use battery-powered COB or LED panel lights, as there are also reasons to invest more and get higher-power lighting instruments. But, if your budget and/or your applications have you looking at lights in this power range, then the SL100D is certainly a great choice… a 5-star choice, in my experienced opinion. ... show more

  • Great Light for both photography and Videography
The media could not be loaded. Picked this light up almost a month ago and have been very happy with its performance. I’ve been using this mainly as a photography light with kids which is less disruptive than a flash with them, but also works great for video as well. Right off the bat the light feels like a quality built unit. Metal housing with a large aluminum heat sink. The Bowens mount is also made from aluminum. Glad that this light uses a bowens mount to use with all of My existing soft boxes. I saw a review that stated it was not compatible, which isn’t true. This unit worked fine with all of my Bowens mount accessories. What you get inside the box. The light itself, a bulb protector for storing, a reflector housing, a very long power cord, color gels, and a remote control. The light is extremely bright at full power and is adjustable in 1% increments from 1-100% brightness. The color temperature is none adjustable, fixed at 5600k which is neutral daylight temperature and works perfect. The included color gels allow you to change lighting color outputs as needed if you require. I was very happy to find that the power cord is very long. This is extremely useful in helping you position the light where it’s needed instead of being limited by cord length. The included remote is also a welcome addition that I didn’t think I would need but is very handy. You have the ability to change brightness as well as power the unit off from the remote. The cooling fan is very quiet on this unit and will not be noticeable if used for video. I am very happy with this purchase and will be purchasing a second light for my photo/video needs. ... show more

  • Works great
This little guy works really good. Lightweight and strong. It dishes out a lot of light, way beyond good enough for portrait photography. Good price as well.

  • Really bright and easy to use video light
The media could not be loaded. Godox 100 Watt video and photo light. Very bright and adjusts from 1 to 100% which is a huge plus. Daylight or 5600K color balance. I've used this on both video and photography shoots with snoots and softbox. Works great on anything that is bowens mount. Comes with the LED protection adapter for when you're not using the light and its stored. Remote control for turning on/off and brightness. Also different color gels. That's an added bonus. Build quality is very good. Fan noise is minimal, actually when shooting video and I'm next to the light with a lavalier mic on, you can't hear the fan noise in the video at all. Bluetooth is great, love the app for turning on and off as well as brightness levels and changing to special effect mode. Over all, I'm very happy with this light, thinking about getting a second. ... show more

  • Fantastic light for studio
Very happy with this. I have a rental studio and wanted a light that did not require a trigger and was not gear specific so all photographers could easily use it. Popped an 86in PLM on it and it works perfectly!

  • Super BRIGHT!!! very well made
The media could not be loaded. The GODOX SL100D is lit. It's amazingly bright but what I'm most impressed about is how quiet the fan is. You would think after hours of usage, this would be hot to the touch, but it's not. The light is extremely bright, stays cool to the touch, and is extremely well made. We use in our studio for spot light and we also bought a gobo attachment, sold separately that allows us to use it like a gobo projector to add texture to our photos. ... show more
