  • Tiny unit, a bit underbaked on software front
Got this on Black Friday for $155 (using the $20 coupon) and they even sent me 512G version, not 128G I paid for, neat! When I got the unit during the first boot - Windows crashed due to some sort of unassigned interrupt. But I did not really care since I planned to run it under Linux anyway. The bios on this thing is full of various developer options and seems to be fully unlocked which is really neat if you ar eof the tinkering type. But be careful! I saw there's an OS type setting and dared to select Linux there. This instantly rendered the whole thing unbootable, won't even finish POST or display anything! I had to take it apart in search of "bios reset" switch, but instead found that the battery is connected to the board with a (very stubborn) connector. Disconnecting the battery does reset the bios settings to default, yay! Next, I could not boot from a usb drive, if I plug my usb ethernet+hub combo - the unit won't even finish post too! If I just plug in keyboard and usb stick - the boot from usb stick hangs. I know that there's a bios update published on indiegogo page for usb stick booting, but my unit seems to be on a very recent bios version too (hard to tell if it's Nov 10th 2020 or Oct 11th 2020). Anyway I found if you go into the bios setup and select Adnvanced -> CSM and switch it to ENABLED and then reset the machine - both external usb boot works AND the external ethernet also works. I found a number of other suboptiomal bios settings (tpm off, acpi off, temperature sensor disabled, ...) that I had to carefully go over and ty to turn on (carefully, remembering the OS: Linux adventure). As is the unit runs in your OS without turning the fan even as the cpu temperature reaches 103C(!). It idles at about 60C for me. Attached are the pictures I took when taking the unit apart. It seems the motherboard has a space for EMMC storage (and there's support in the BIOS), so I plan to solder in some on-board storage and it'll be a bit more like the chewi larkbox (that does have onboard storage which does offer a bit more security). It is sort of amazing how small the unit is and it's way more powerful than a RaspberryPi and other such android boards when you don't need all the extra IO pins. ... show more

  • Manage Expectations, bout got an HTPC, was not great.
Size: 8GB+128GB/Intel Celeron J4125
So for basic web browsing, even YouTube viewing and productivity this thing is solid, however, i do not recommend using it with more than a 1080p display. I tried using this for an HTPC on a 4K TV and it struggled to render videos smoothly. It was pretty bad. I also did a clean install of windows and upgraded it to windows 11. I was successful, however windows update wasn't able to find all the drivers and such. GMK doesn't even have an official driver download page. They have their drivers hosted on google drive. They have them, listed in individual zips per part, and one massive batch zip with all the drivers for the mini pc. I recommend getting the all in one. The safest easiest way to get windows 11 would be to do an in place upgrade. I do not recommend doing a clean install. This is good for what it is. But it gets uncomfortably hot, has decent storage upgrade-ability. 8 gbs of ram is plenty for this machine at this price. The celeron is a true quad core part, not a dual core hyper threaded part. ... show more

  • I own 3 of these and are great NUCs
I bought two of these for the kids to replace the garbage laptops the school provided. They work perfect for their school work and even allows them to play Minecraft and other things too. The 3rd one is my home file/media server and is hooked up to a USB enclosure with 8tb of storage with 1000 music cds and almost 1000 blurays on it. All running Arch Linux. ... show more

  • No manual, nonexistent support
I gave two stars not actually having used it, but with decent specs, size, and being true to images. With no instructions, I did not know how to use it. I first Googled, then went to GMK site, but nothing. I sent email request to address I found at bottom of intro sheet, printed in tiny font. Took two days for curt reply, '. . . packed with product'. I replied that it was not. Took three more days for reply that contained suggested links to videos, but none to initial setup or .pdf manual. Five days with no manual that should have been packed in new, sealed package, but not, and still nothing. With that poor level of support, I returned it. Bill ... show more

  • Great Computer in a Tiny Box!
Update: 12/14/2020 - After two weeks of use, this compute cube just keeps humming along. I very happy with the purchase and would recommend to anyone wanting a second general use system. I bought this based on a couple of reviews I read, after researching the best small form factor to use as a second computer. After 48 hours of constant use, I can say this is a fantastic computer and great value. I wasn’t expecting much based on the small size and price point but I’m impressed with the build quality and overall user experience. While the fan noise is a little distracting, the ability to keep this compute cube cool under high stress is an one trade off...I am happy to make. So far I have thrown 4K videos, streaming uncompressed music, & NAS activities at the GMK NUC and it hasn’t missed a beat. ... show more

  • Overall a solid device.. a couple of caveats
Size: 8GB+512GB/Intel Celeron J4125
Overall this is a solid device.. I got one to use with a Linux OS for creating a retro gaming system (doing so with Windows was just too slow for this NUC). So far it's working very well.. but there's a couple of things users should be aware of if they try to use it for anything other than the Windows installation it came with. First.. you will need to update it to the latest BIOS and firmware updates BEFORE changing the OS away from Windows. The installers won't use anything but the Windows 10 version that the NUC comes with. Next.. you will need to turn OFF the temperature sensor for the fan. The automatic fan levels ONLY work when Windows is running. The result is that this will have the fan running full blast all the time.. but at least you won't burn up the NUC (as I nearly did). One final note: DO NOT USE THE POWER SUPPLY THAT CAME WITH THE NUC FOR ANYTHING OTHER THAN THE NUC. There's a USB-C port on this NUC for power only.. but it does NOT appear to adhere to proper USBC standards for power. I mistakenly plugged the power supply from this NUC into another piece of electronics and fried the electronics. Be warned. ... show more
