Description

This quality honey comes from the pristine wilderness of South-Western Tasmania. Every summer the bees are taken into the rainforest where they find the white flower of the Leatherwood Tree. The honey they produce from the leatherwood nectar has a very distinctive spicy aroma and a strong piquant flavor that is highly sought after by connoisseurs of honey the world over. Unlike many other honeys, this honey has not been filtered or heated, so it comes to you just as it is found in the rainforest; the pure, natural flavors intact, and a fine candied texture.

Definitely one of the more bizarre single source honeys I've tried. As described, the honey is extremely floral. The smell advertises what’s going in the flavor: tropical flowers. I've been to Hawaii and experienced the intoxicating aroma of plumeria and the orchids from which leis are made. And this is exactly what the honey smells and tastes like. The honey is sweet, delicious and (dare I repeat myself) tropically floral. I love it but then again I desire strongly-flavored, exotic single source honeys so this product is not for those who prefer a light honey. I got some as a gift once, and could not believe the wonderful floral taste. The white blossoms on the leatherwood trees grow only on this Island. It's remarkable to me I even get to buy such a unique, and special honey.

We really like this honey but we only put it on one thing and that is the final coating on our Smoked Salmon right after it comes out of the smokehouse while it’s still warm!!! It adds an amazing finishing flavor to the smoked Salmon.

{Summary@Bottom if you find my review long-winded} File this honey under the "I'm actually glad I bought it and can share something unique with people, but I wouldn't put it on monthly subscription" category. When you first open and smell it, there's a deep strong strange fruity aroma coming from the can. After two spoonfuls, it's smooth upfront but I also noticed an unusual aftertaste. It's definitely unfamiliar but not entirely unpleasant. It's like the Tasmanian devil took a basket of berries and honey into a woodworking shop, did his thing, collected the aftermath, reduced it on the stove and put it in a can. I really cant put my finger on, but it's fruity, woody(maybe smokey?) and kinda chemically. It's also got a very slight graininess(crystallization) to it. Since I don't typically eat honey by itself(normally), I decided to dump it into my late night Jif jar and give it the old college try. This product just didnt taste right in the 50/50 mix of PB/H. maybe the salt in the PB really accentuated those underlying flavors for me, but It was not a good match. To be fair(Insert awful Letterkenny joke here), I also did this with some 16+ Manuka, and that PB/H combo just didnt taste good either. To continue being "fairrrrr", 16+ Manuka I have at home has a much much stronger flavor up front and they are really different altogether, but both just do not work with PB for me. I really like the little "Paint" can it comes in. It would make a nice gift for someone who likes it's unique nature and will try a different take on something as universally established as honey. with regard to value, I don't see many honeys from Australia costing less than a $1.50US/oz, so really this appears to be in line with similar regional products. I mean, if you are minding the budget why are you buying imported honey to begin with unless you are looking for a new flavor? Buying honey local to where you live will always be more affordable. Besides, have you really ever bought honey that was soooo spectacularly better than any other?(If you say sourwood, I'll have to concede because I havent tried it yet) Long Winded Summary: It's definitely a smooth honey upfront with a completely unfamiliar aftertaste to me that doesnt seem to harmonize with a salty PB like Jif. I just dont think this is some defective, exorbitantly expensive product. It really appears to be an exotic, regional item that may not be your cup of tea, but worth trying once and may just float the boat of someone you know. Think about Manuka honey. It's readily available where I live in Texas, and I think it has an even more assertive flavor than this variety. ... show more
