  • It's a plastic owl
It's a plastic owl. So, it pretty much lived up to my expectations of a plastic owl. If you are looking for a real owl, you will be disappointed.

  • So far so good! It is plastic
The media could not be loaded. So far so good! It is plastic, but it looks fairly sturdy. It's hollow with a plug in the bottom. You can weight it down by filling with rocks or sand if you choose. I mounted him to the rail of my back porch by drilling holes in the sides of the base and used zip ties. That way I can move him around easily if I wish. In the background you can see some bird-scaring wind spinners I bought first. Those were doing pretty good-- my porch rail had only only a few bird droppings instead of being covered after installing those. So this owl is my Phase 2 of warding off the robins that seem to be rather prolific this year. ... show more

  • Incredible Bird Deterent
My wife asked me to purchase a Bobble Headed Owl to discourage the Starlings that liked one side of our pool. Every morning the hose was used to flush of pool rail where the had gathered the evening before. You could count how many had gathered by the amount of large bird droppings which most had came to rest there. Unfortunately some had lightened when taking off and ended up in the center of the pool. Not only was this annoying but also unsanitary. I was apprehensive when ordering as I thought it was another gadget like the toy snakes which did not work at all. When it arrived my wife was excited and put it together with the weather vein inside placed on the back of the head. That was about a week ago and we have not had ONE bird dropping since. This Owl works 100%! ... show more

  • Look For The Wind Sail
Ok for the price! When you shake the Owl you hear a rattle inside which makes you think there’s a broken part, NOT SO - look further. Remove that annoying tapping and then probe into the body and you will find a plastic wind piece. It would be nice if they told you it was there but no such luck! This piece is critical because it fits into a slot in the Owls head and acts as a sail when the wind blows and turns the head! There are no instructions with this product and if it were not for sheer luck, I would not have found the plastic piece. Good luck! ... show more

  • Made the hawks stop thinking about chicken :)
We have free ranging chickens, and we had two hawks patrolling our pastures. The hawks were always there— on a fence line, in a tree, screeching to each other. There was one attempt made to take a chicken (unsuccessfully). I ordered this owl, set him on a fence line post....and I haven’t seen or heard a hawk since (it’s been about a week now). The owl does sometimes fall off the post, but it seems to work anyway. I pick him up and stick it in a different spot every day or two. I’m happy with the purchase! ... show more

  • YES!!! Finally something that keeps the birds away!
I was very skeptical that this would work. I caged my blueberry bushes which keeps the deer and other large critters away but for years I have been battling the birds who squeeze through the fencing and devour my precious blueberries. Even covering the entire cage in bird netting didn't help. The birds simply picked at it until they made a hole to enter and exit through. I decided to try the swivel headed owl hoping that it might at least lessen the damage being done. WOW! Was I surprised! This thing not only kept some birds away - it kept them all away for the entire blueberry season! I mounted two dowel rods, one on each side of my fencing and everyday I would move the owl from one rod to the other so that the birds wouldn't get used to it being in one stationary place. (the owl has a hole in the bottom that allows you to easily drop it onto a dowel rod). The day the owl arrived, I carried it to my garden but before mounting the owl, I had to chase three birds out of my enclosure. Once the owl went up, I never again found a bird inside. My blueberry harvest was at least 3 times what I have gotten in any previous year. This owl is one of my all time favorite garden purchases!!! It does not detect motion but instead has a rotating head that will sway and bobble in the wind. The owl is lightweight plastic and could be filled with rocks or sand but I found that perching it onto a dowel rod worked great. ... show more

  • Working Great So Far!
I bought this owl to scare the birds away from my new deck. My neighbor likes to feed the birds and my new deck was becoming the new bird bathroom. I read a lot of the reviews and I decided to buy a 2x2x8 pressure treated pole and some bungy cords. The pole fit into the hole on the bottom no problem. Next I bought some modeling clay. when I put the plastic fin on the back of the head, the resting position for the head was looking over the owl's back. I did not like that. I put the modeling clay under the chin in small amounts until the head came to rest facing to the owl's front. Day one, I put the owl on the pole and strapped the pole to the deck railing with the bungy cords. The owl looked great and the birds stayed away. There is always a breeze in my back yard and the owl's head was constantly turning back and forth like it was surveying the area. On day two, I moved the owl to a different place on the railing and then a huge thunderstorm rolled in. High winds and torrential downpour and the owl remained in place. The heavier winds turned the Owl on the pole and the head was spinning 360 degrees but the owl remained on the pole. Now it has been a week and still no birds. We have named the owl Oliver. I bring him in at night and in the morning I put him in different location on the Deck. Only once did a bird come to the deck railing. I think I had moved Oliver too far away from my neighbor's side of the deck. After one week, I would recommend using this owl. ... show more

  • Nice Realistic Owl: Instructions Please?
With 35mph+ steady winds, I immediately filled the base with driveway gravel. That kept it from blowing over. The head is advertised to swivel in wind. I saw NO movement of the head from wind, though it turns freely by hand. The owl included a small plastic half moon piece, which I had no clue what to do with? Next day I looked at back of head & saw a coin slot, like a bank. Obviously that plastic thingy inserts there & acts as a wind paddle. IF I only had simple instructions explaining this? One star off for that reason. ... show more
