  • NOT sealed cartridge bearings!!!
OK, I asked this question before buying this headset and apparently people don't know what they're talking about, which is what I figure most of the time anyway. As is pretty regular with both the q & a and the reviews on here lately, and for a few years now, they are not worth even reading or participating in anymore because they are littered with erroneous information and opinions... And we all know what opinions smell like so, I will clarify at least this one for some people and hopefully they get to read mine before all the rest of you BSrs who'd be best to just keep your traps shut when you don't know! This headset is NOT, I repeat NOT sealed cartridge bearings! It is IS indeed caged ball bearings, albeit with useless plastic dust retainers. I have included some pictures and for those of you who don't know what you're talking about, take a good look at them because they look absolutely nothing like sealed cartridge bearings! So before you go confusing others or giving wrong information, take a good long look at the photos because they are photos of CAGED BALL BEARINGS!!! I was going to return it but I wanted my bike for the weekend and figured this HS would at least be better than the old one that was worn out, but I'm not so sure of that. This was the most difficult to install of all headsets and I've done many and I also have the right tools. The cups were a pain to get pressed in, they kept going out of alignment. The bottom one was much more difficult than the top, it was as if it were out of round and a smidge large in diameter. Most I've done go together fairly smoothly and I can usually do both cups with the same press but this one I had to do them one at a time after fiddling around with trying to get them both to go. I noticed the top one was being a bit more cooperative so I got that one seated first. The bottom one was still giving me a hard time so once I got a bit of tension with the press, I tapped the side that didn't want to go with a mallet a few times before giving it a good whack out of frustration. That smartened it up but it still went in pretty hard for the rest of the press. I hope it didn't screw up my head tube. So after finally getting it all together, there's quite a bit of play in it and I tried several times with different size spacers to no avail. The play in this new FSA HS is more than was in my old worn out one. So I've ordered the one I should have in the first place, CC 40 series like the last one that lasted over 3 years and this one goes in the trash. Don't waste your money, put another $20 with it and get the right stuff. ... show more

  • QUALITY COMPONENT AT GREAT PRICE! RECOMMEND! (Just definitely confirm your specs match!)
Worked PERFECTLY for my 03 Trek. For me it was fairly easy to install, and even without the relevant special tools, but just be aware that without said specialty tools (technically 3. A tool to remove "cups," a tool to press in the "cups," though can easily make your own with long bolt, wide washers, and a nut, and a tool for seating bearing race on fork), unless you're fairly mechanically inclined and have access to variety of tools, possibly enlist help or take to shop. And use grease/lube to aid in pressing if you do attempt yourself. Great product! GREAT VALUE! DEFINITELY RECOMMEND, if you have 1 1/8" steerer tube, non-tapered, and bearings of relevant size (can't remember the number at present). I wasn't 100% on my steering tube width. As it's older, I feared it was 1". But the bearing sizes matched mine, so went for it assuming my steer tube WAS 1 1/8" and yup, like I said, perfection! ... show more

  • good basic headset or good for parts
Basic Headset This is super basic, I did like the over-sized bottom bearings and cup, but the top cup assembly was only so so. I didn't like the way that the wedge was kind of exposed. my almost 20 year old aheadset seemed to have a better design, and the cup and top cap still looked to be in good shape, so I used the new bearings, cleaned up the old cup and cap and reused the top half of the headset. I still give this 4 stars because the parts do look to be decent quality, and I needed new bottom bearings, and crown race. these parts alone would have cost more than the entire set from FSA. So, in short, if you are looking for something cheap that will do the trick, this will work. If you need only a few parts, this would be good for parts, but I think if you want a nice looking headset you may want to consider something that costs a little more.. ... show more

  • Not as great a deal as you might think
The model name of this headset gives the impression that this unit can take a pounding and then some but in reality I don't think this is anything more than a basic 1-1/8" threadless headset; the only exception is that lower balls are slightly larger than the upper balls. This headset is not sealed very well and the split plastic centering cone sits just slightly proud of the rest of the upper assembly and is uncovered which makes a nice spot for the ingress of water into the unit. Recommend using plenty of waterproof/marine grade grease with this headset. The bearing race surfaces are not polished, they are black like the rest of the unit. Assembly and adjustment was quick and easy (I have a professional headset press) but the unit does not feel all that smooth....and I had the head tube of my frame properly "faced" prior to installing....perhaps with some use it will smooth itself out. The unit I received came with all the parts pictured and the only thing that separates it from other FSA Hammer Headsets is that the "Hammer" emblem is not present on either of the bearing cups. Perhaps this is older stock and current stock has the emblem...or perhaps I received a lower grade headset...for the price I paid it was not worth the hassle to figure out or send back...and the parts match visually with pictures of the "Hammer" headset that I pulled up on google images. For the price , I am sure this headset will get the job done...but for how long? If/when it fails I will shop for a better model. If you are looking for a basic headset for not much money this one is just as good as any...maybe better than some, maybe not. If using in wet weather/environment such as a daily commuter in the rain or wet and muddy trail riding, then perhaps it would be better to find a different headset that is sealed a bit better. ... show more
