  • DON’T DO IT!!!!!
I gave it 1 star just to acknowledge the effort that went into creating this product. Look I’m not a guy who turns my nose up to non-alcoholic beverages. I can enjoy a Budweiser Zero or other non-alcoholic beer. So when I saw this product advertised, out of curiosity I bought a bottle. After all why not? Lemme tell you all about this. First off, as soon as you pull the cork out, the aroma is a slap in the face to all bourbons everywhere. It smells like the aftertaste of vomit in your mouth. So right out the gate things weren’t looking good. But I was committed to trying it out so I dug in and prepared myself. I put a large ball in my glass and poured this over it. I let it settle for a few minutes before taking a sip. Oh my god it was bad. I can’t put it any other way. It begins with a familiar oak taste but a second after hitting my tongue, there was that vomit taste again with a prune finish. I had to force it down because I didn’t want to be wasteful. A week later I thought I would give it another try. But after a few sips I gave up. I poured out the glass and poured the rest of the bottle down the sink. The whole kitchen smelled like vomit and prunes for about a half hour afterward. I wouldn’t recommend this for anyone. If you’re looking for a non-alcoholic bourbon, this ain’t it. In fact you may just have to face reality. Because I have zero faith in these products now. I’ll be sticking with the real thing and only the real thing from now on. I had hoped to dabble with creating a non-alcoholic Old Fashioned with this, but I think I’ll go back to experimenting with iced tea to find that proper fix. And I’ll stick with my Woodford, Buffalo Trace, and Bulleitt for myself. I normally don’t leave reviews for products on here. I just buy my stuff and mind my own business. But I can’t in good conscience stay silent. If you’re reading this, trust me. It’s not worth it. Find something else. ... show more

  • A new king of non-alcoholic whiskeys?
This spiritless whiskey is surprisingly good. I’m very impressed. Is it indistinguishable from a real whiskey? No. But it reminds me of a friend who can convincingly substitute cauliflower for potatoes. The lingering sensation in the nasal cavities and throat is more reminiscent of real whiskey than any other mocktail I’ve tried so far. Like all of these, it’s much better with a mixer. However, use a much lower ratio than you would in a real cocktail, as these tend to lose their effect with too much added. I’m a bit worried about the shelf life. For the price, I would want this to last a long time. The label suggests a much shorter shelf life than is what would be most useful. Everyone who tasted it knowing it is non-alcoholic was impressed, but said they could tell it wasn’t real. However, those who I poured a drink for and let them believe it was real was fooled. Most reactions liked the taste but was confused as to which brand it was. After finding out the truth, everyone agreed the effect was even more convincing after a couple drinks when no longer focused on describing it. Really looking forward to future Free Spirits products. A sample pack of airline bottles would be great, but they need more than one drink’s worth of each for your senses to grow a suspension of disbelief. Hoping for some Rums, a Canadian Rye, and even a scotch! If they have a mailing list. I want on it. ... show more

  • Liquid Ashtray Misery
TLDR save your money. If you like the feeling of being punched in the throat with pepper and enjoy drinking whole cigars instead of smoking them, this is for you. My fiancé and I were hopeful that we had found a way to share a drink together. He doesn’t drink anymore but liked the idea of sharing a drink with me with a taste-a-like. Unfortunately this is not pleasant in any way and we are keeping it as a prank drink. Or the ultimate bad drink in a drink roulette. The first notes when swished in your mouth simulate some of the fruity and corn notes of bourbon, which is quite pleasant. But then, when you swallow, you get hit in the throat with a capsaicin ash tray. A flavor that then infects the rest of your mouth. I’m guessing this is to simulate the “burn” of bourbon, but I have never had a bourbon burn me as bad as this. Not even the unrefined and unfiltered kinds. I’m honestly disappointed because I was so hopeful for this to be good, and somewhat comparable to the pleasant tasting notes of bourbon. But the attempt to (poorly) simulate the alcohol burn misses the mark and ruins the experience. ... show more

  • Good for making mock tails
Works well when mixed Free Spirits Vermouth and Spirit of Milano. 1 part each. It makes a nice mock tail. I don’t think it tastes so good in its own. If you want a little alcohol, you can use real sweet vermouth.

  • Not what I expected
I should have paid more attention to the other reviews. This "bourbon" alternative is not great. The taste is not there yet, the attempt at "spice" is overdone and pretty hot, and I will likely not have another sip of this bottle. That being said, when I reached out to the company, they were very responsive and accommodating, far more than I would have ever expected. Hopefully, their continued efforts at "heat" and similar flavor are fruitful. ... show more

  • Worth a try
Pretty squarely a three. Not good, but I didn’t find it gross either. I probably won't buy it again. I just thought it would be worth a try. I like the ritual of making a cocktail in the evening and it’s satisfied that itch. The cocktail tasted OK. It was a little hot as others said. But I think that’s what you’re going for, that alcohol burn right? Something has to replace it. The NA beers taste way better. If you’re just looking to cut down your alcohol, I think that’s a better way to go. ... show more
