  • dead batteries upon arrival
Used exact product for years and wanted an exact replacement. Unit did not work at first and I found a corroded battery. I am keeping the item, I do not think the corroded battery will affect life of unit, but I want this problem recorded. You count sent me two new batteries if you would like.

  • Expect to be frustrated
I thought an electronic dictionary would be a convenient way to quickly find the meanings of unfamiliar words I encountered while reading (especially Wilber Smith novels). I purchased this device and have been cursing it to the point of flinging it in the trash. Lid hard to open. Buttons difficult to operate. Function logic cumbersome. But, that's just the beginning. The very first word I looked up wasn't in the dictionary, so the device displays "corrections" and then offers several unrelated words that are contained in its feeble memory. At least half of words I've looked up are not contained it this little piece of crap. I pulled it back out of the trash a will give it to my 7 year old grand daughter, maybe she'll find some use for it. ... show more

  • Mom's Choice
I got this for my dear mother, who uses it daily with her newspaper crossword puzzle. Her original 460A finally quit working after years of almost daily use (I bought it at Barnes & Noble at least ten years ago), and it was almost like she had lost her best friend or something. She has a couple of other of these electronic dictionary's, but she doesn't like them as well. Anyway, I picked this one up used for about $30 for Mother's Day, it arrived on-time, works well, and mom couldn't be more pleased. This unit came in good condition, as advertised. I would use this seller again, thanks. ... show more

  • Ancient technology and a difficult to read screen
In the mid-1970's, I purchased a Franklin Merriam-Webster electronic dictionary/thesaurus. It lasted until the end of 2020, some 45 years. That's the way products used to be made. The latest version of the Franklin Merriam-Webster electronic dictionary/thesaurus made, of course, in China, is a trinket compared to the 1970's version. The older version was about the size of a three-bar soap box. It was sturdy, had a presence on a desk, was easy to use and filled with synonyms. The current model, like virtually every current electronic gadget, is slightly larger than palm-size. It's screen is a greenish charcoal and the lettering appears to be a sort of navy blue, making it difficult to read except under bright light. The keyboard features teardrop-size characters which are resistant to soft touch and easily prone to error when typing-in word choices. I'm trying to think of something positive to write about this device, but am coming up short. It is flimsy and overpriced with dark, hard-to-read lettering and technology dating back to the previous electronic dictionary/thesaurus iteration but lacking the size, functionality, ease of use and overall attractiveness of the 1970's model. And I am 100% certain this delicate toy will not last 5 years, let alone 45. I can use the same paperback thesaurus I employed in college just as quickly as I can power-on, type in and wait for this unimpressive contraption to deliver a limited number of synonyms. Bottom Line: Skip this product. It is cheap, tawdry, outdated, hard-to-read, slow to use, with a very restricted thesaurus and a cursory set of definitions. All relevant factors considered, I value this item at approximately $25. Look elsewhere for an electronic dictionary/thesaurus device. ... show more

  • It's a great product!
This is a great product, especially at such a low price. The best feature for me was the list of SAT words and flashcards. It was more efficient than making index cards or studying definitions from a regualar dictionary. The time it takes to define a word is fairly quick as well. Some definitions include funny etymologies toward the end that really help the word stick. There are a few drawbacks to the product. For instance, the screen doesn't light up, the word list can't hold more than 40 words, and the buttons sometimes tend to be unresponsive. Still, for about $30, you get more than you'd expect. At least if you're in high school. If you're an adult, then a dictionary with a larger word capacity would be a better buy. I definitely recommend it! :) ... show more

  • Small and easy to use
Just needed a dictionary/thesaurus and while this one is a little smaller than I had hoped, it does what I need it to and the price was reasonable. It came quickly and in very good condition.
