  • I bought a new a day after I lost the first
This is a pretty nifty dictionary. It's use is intuitive. My favorite features so far are: 1- You can look up verbs (that you may have seen written) in conjugated form, and this dictionary will return the regular (infinitive??) form of the verb. Meaning, you don't have to guess what the regular form is. Por ejemplo, you can enter "vio" and it will return "ver" 2-You can choose what mode you want operate in English -> Spanish or Spanish -> English and every time you turn on your dictionary, it'll stay in that mode until you change it. 3-Further if you've typed in an English word for which you'd like to know the Spanish equivalent, but you're still in Spanish->English mode, you can press a button labelled "lang" for language, and it will switch you to English->Spanish mode without deleting what you've worked so hard to type. I haven't even read the instructions yet and it gets 4 stars. What happened to the other star? Well, the physical feel is kind of cheap feeling (compared to japanese dictionaries). Nor does it look particularly good. Lastly it'd be good to have a little lip on the lid to make opening this thing easier. Also, it'd be nice to be able pick exactly which conjugated form you'd like to look at instead of having to cycle through all of them. I don't think it's possible to go back to the previous one you looked at. But all of this may be possible, and may be in the instructions. ... show more

  • Good essential dictionary, not very sturdy
In general I like this device, very helpful in my studies. I use it constantly while watching TV, reading. You can get pretty much all regular vocabulary. Not much of the Mexican Spanish that often can be heard in the movies or telenovelas though, but I've already bought the regular Mexican Spanish dictionary for that. At first I was disapointed with the batteries - after less then 2 months have to be changed! I went to Radio Shack and was shocked - pretty expensive! But now I bought them in bulk, like 10 in a time, and it cost about $1 each, so no complaints there. My only beef with this dictionary now is that cover broked off on one side - I even haven't noticed when. So now I have to be very careful if I want to take it anywhere with me, so I mostly keep it at home next to the remote control for TV. ... show more

  • Vocabulary could be larger
This functions pretty much the same as my old Frankln 1440a. The on/off key was sticking so I opted to buy a new one hoping that the million words description might mean it had a larger vocabulary. As a somewhat advanced user, I find a lot of word just aren't in the machine and I have to resort to real dictionaries or online dictionaries. So that was disappointing. Otherwise, other that it being notably larger, it works the same. The larger size and keys actually took some getting used to. The trade off being that by having bigger keys, you have to reach more for them. It does fit in a man's shirt pocket but is a bit big for my hand so I worried about dropping it at first. But I've adapted quickly and love having it handy. I use the word list heavily to save and review new words. ... show more

  • Functional and Efficient
I use this handy-dandy little dictionary for a Spanish language translation exam class I'm taking (a graduate program requirement). Our language department is dictionary-specific (MUST use Merriam-Webster) so this electronic dictionary was perfect. The only issue I've had is with SOME verb translations - where the book dictionary offers multiple verb forms the electronic only offers one or two choices. Because Spanish can have SO MANY verb forms, this is kind of a pain. It's small, which would make it great for traveling, BUT it's also not the most substantial thing I've carried around. While my front cover is still attached, I can see how it might easily break if jostled or put with heavier items. Overall I'm super happy with this purchase - it's well worth it when facing a timed exam. ... show more

  • A Great Tool!
At first I was not so sure about this system. I hate complicated instructions (or so I perceived), so I just jumped in and followed the tutorial, then started using the dictionary system and simply played with it. Be aware that sometimes the buttons can stick when pressed on an edge. The screen will just flash, so just adjust the button back and the screen goes back to normal. Worth the little bit of extra time as you get used to it. The more you use it, the easier and faster it gets. Certainly faster than using a dictionary, and you get all the uses plus then you can "decline" the word to see related verb forms. You would need a cart to haul around a Spanish dictionary that contains all the words that this little electronic device has at your fingertips. This is a timesaver and a learning tool at a very fair price. ... show more

  • **Don't buy this if you are a serious Español Student**
I am majoring in Spanish in college. I needed something to help me with my homework. This is a good dictionary, but the verb conjugation is designed very badly. You have to hit a function key and an arrow key to move between tenses-then there is a little "page turning" symbol for 4 seconds. That means if I want to get to the subjective tense, it will take 40 seconds of watching that stupid little symbol turning "pages" and pressing buttons over and over. If I wanted to turn pages, I'd use the book. The long and the short is, I can conjugate verbs quicker with my 501 verbs book than this thing. When you enter a conjugated verb in, it does not translate it for you, it goes to the dictionary and gives you the infinitive. If you want to replace your dictionary, this will do ok, and buying the flash card makes it almost a PDA, but the card did not work right either. I'm not interested in buying any other Franklin products after this. ... show more
