Description

The Fowler Shockproof stainless steel dial caliper has dial graduations of 0.001" or 0.02mm with 0.001" and 0.02mm accuracy, shockproof anti-backlash control, a sliding jaw with a lock, and a covered rack. This caliper is used for measuring inside dimensions (ID), outside dimensions (OD), depth, and step.Shockproof spring anti-backlash control with a heavy-duty spring offers increased accuracy over standard gear configurations. Backlash is the amount of clearance between mated gear teeth in the caliper controls that prevents the gear teeth from jamming. It is undesirable to have much backlash due to the lack of precision offered by the increased amount of play between gears. Certain gear designs can minimize or eliminate backlash; spring anti-backlash systems use a spring to add a compressive force, thereby minimizing backlash. This caliper has a knurled lock screw to hold the sliding jaw in position and help ensure a consistent measurement. A covered rack prevents dirt and debris from clogging the gear, and helps prevent measurement errors. A thumb-operated fine adjustment roller allows for one-handed use.The caliper measures 0.10" or 2mm per revolution of the dial. The dial has 0.001" or 0.02mm graduations, and the beam has engraved 0.1" or 1mm graduations. The hardened stainless steel components, including the bar, measuring surfaces, rack, gears, and depth rod, offer corrosion resistance, increased accuracy, and long life. Self-contained movement eliminates gear misalignment, while the dual pinion drive mechanism reduces wear on the rack and pinion. An adjustable dial enables setting zero. The hardened stainless steel is polished to a satin chrome finish, to help prevent glare. This caliper comes with a fitted case.Dial calipers are measuring instruments commonly used for inspection in manufacturing to provide the precise measurements of an object. A pair of jaws attached to a long beam with a marked scale is used to measure inside, outside, and step measurements in standard or metric units. An additional depth probe slides along the beam to take depth measurements. One jaw is fixed to the end of the scale, while the other jaw slides along it to take measurements. A circular dial indicator is fixed to the movable jaw on a toothed gear rack that transfers movement of the jaws to the dial needle. The base measurement is taken from the long beam, which provides the initial whole measurement in inches or centimeters, and added to the dial reading, which provides fractional measurements in inches or millimeters. A locking mechanism provides the ability to take differential measurements for determining the difference in measurements between two objects. Compared to digital calipers, dial calipers are more durable, but are more susceptible to shock damage and prone to getting dirt in the gears, which can cause accuracy problems. Vernier calipers are more durable than dial calipers because they do not have internal moving parts, but they can be more difficult to read. Dial calipers are commonly used in fields such as metalworking, mechanical engineering, machining, and carpentry. The Fred V. Fowler Company manufactures inspection and measurement instruments such as electronic indicators, calipers, bore gages, and digital scales. The company, founded in 1946, is headquartered in Newton, MA.What's in the Box?Fowler Shockproof dial caliperFitted case

  • Spot on
Size: 4" Color: White
I tested these with a few feeler gauges and they hit the mark on every one. Spot on accuracy and tight construction. Im comfortable trusting this caliper.

  • Good value for the money
Size: 12" Color: White
This 12” caliper works for my needs. I have had 0 issues with the accuracy even at larger dimensions.

  • Excellent Dial Caliper
Size: 0-150 mm Color: Yellow
This is a 150 mm dial caliper, made of stainless steel (no plastic parts that I can see), and with perfect accuracy. I chose dial calipers, because I see no reason to complicate things with a battery and an electronic readout when perfection is achieved with a simple needle and dial on a geared mechanism. This will never fail, and never require batteries! I have a dial caliper in fractions of an inch, another by Browne & Sharpe which has one-thousandthds of an inch, and this one in millimeters. I buy calipers with only one measurement system on the dial, because I'm not ever going to need fractions of an inch at the same time that I'm reading millimeters, and the same with thousandths of an inch. No need to try to put them all on the same dial. Just have a different caliper for each. This makes reading it very easy; your eyes do not have to sort out the meaningless information to find the answer. So, this is a single-readout measuring tool, in .02 millimeters, which is exactly what I wanted. It has a yellow dial, which I wanted to distinguish it from my other calipers. This makes it easy to identify, and the yellow is actually easy to read. The mechanism is smooth and silky. It could be by Browne & Sharpe, there is nothing cheap about it. I have accidentally dropped it 4 feet, and it seems unaffected by the drop, proving that it is indeed shockproof as labeled. This is a nice instrument, and I'm very pleased to have this. I don't know if Fowler merely put their name on an instrument made by someone else -- as appears to be the case -- but I commend them on selling a high-quality caliper that feels as good as any that I own, and I do own the best. ... show more

  • Works fine with one minor flaw
Size: 12" Color: White
My son needed these for his new job. These work just fine, but the blades are a tad short for his needs. They are at their limit for his needs. They work. That's what matters. He can always buy a high dollar set in the future if he desires.

  • Big win shouldn't have waited this long
Size: 4' Color: Black
I have wanted a 4" set for a long time they are twice as handy as I thought they would be I love them my only complaint is that the width of the scale bar is smaller than that of the 6" or 12" so my depth foot doesn't fit on the 4" version not a big deal but would have been nice
