Description

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER"Lucid and wrenching...Forward puts [Wambach's] achievement in context with painful and beautiful candor." —NPR"Forward is the powerful story of an athlete who has inspired girls all over the world to believe in themselves." —Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook COO, New York Times Bestselling author of Lean In “This is the best memoir I’ve read by an athlete since Andre Agassi’s Open.” —Adam Grant, Wharton professor and New York Times bestselling author of Originals and Give and TakeAbby Wambach has always pushed the limits of what is possible. At age seven she was put on the boys’ soccer team. At age thirty-five she would become the highest goal scorer—male or female—in the history of soccer, capturing the nation’s heart with her team’s 2015 World Cup Championship. Called an inspiration and “badass” by President Obama, Abby has become a fierce advocate for women’s rights and equal opportunity, pushing to translate the success of her team to the real world. As she reveals in this searching memoir, Abby’s professional success often masked her inner struggle to reconcile the various parts of herself: ferocious competitor, daughter, leader, wife. With stunning candor, Abby shares her inspiring and often brutal journey from girl in Rochester, New York, to world-class athlete. Far more than a sports memoir, Forward is gripping tale of resilience and redemption—and a reminder that heroism is, above all, about embracing life’s challenges with fearlessness and heart. • Touching and honest
This book is an honest portrayal of winning, losing, and everything in between. Abby was such a phenomenal athlete yet she struggled with her own self love. She is someone who puts it all on the table yet takes responsibility for her actions. A true hero in my mind. I appreciate her candid outlook and I think she is courageous for being so real. Amazing story and an even more amazing person. Loved this book!! ... show more

  • GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I did not know what to expect when I ordered this book. I know I love soccer, love Abby Wambach and her air of IDGAF, and her wild play for so many years. I also figured that would have to add up to a great story - how did she get there? what was the US Women's locker room like? I did not know she played for the Gators (boo! Go Seminoles!) The best parts of the book were the open and frank very introspective insights into her life. It read like a novel, chock full of raw emotion, sports action, and team camaraderie. Love the writing style, felt like it was directed at me, a nearly middle-aged straight white guy who likes to stand out from normal without piercings, hi-glo hair, or ostentatious shows to claim my presence. Thanks for that. The biggest lesson I gained from the book is that we all make mistakes, and we have to learn how to adapt and improve ourselves from them. If I were still a teacher (speaking of past mistakes), I would d\grade it a 9/10. An A-. Excellent for a first publication. I look forward to more because there is definitely not an ending to this memoir. ... show more

  • a good read
Probably a 3.75, but gave it 4 for the honesty. I enjoyed Abby as a player, and my own kiddo’s tenacity in her soccer games reminds me of Abby. I’m a gator, and I love that connection. But the honesty about her life was refreshing - I don’t know what I was expecting, but this book wasn’t it, but in a good way. I’m glad I read it. ... show more

  • A beautifully raw, humble and enlightening book
I couldn't put this book down. If you think you know Abby Wambach, you should probably think again. The outspoken and tough exterior is only a small facet of her being. She writes this book with incredible honesty and vulnerability, clearly with an intention to inspire others by showing that it's ok to be insecure, imperfect while at the same time being a powerhouse. You're always evolving and its the journey that is the most beautiful part. I highly recommend you read, especially for those that may take their children's sports a bit too seriously (you know who you are)! ... show more

  • The perfect story for those of us who know we'll never be perfect(but strive to be more so)
This book is written by a champion. Wambach is the best forward we've had since(perhaps even including) Mia Hamm. But that's not the message of this fine memoir. This is a story about an impressive, but imperfect, human being, who has lived a life trying hard to earn love from herself and others. Among her successes and failures, her happy times, and her low points, Abby explains her realization that love is not something one has to earn. Though hard work and dreams are key precious, self-love is not just for the best among us. It is our birthright. Your failures and shortcomings do not define you. We are all imperfect. What matters is that we learn from our mistakes, strive to be better, and love ourselves(and others) along the way. No book explains this better than Forward. ... show more

  • Not for young readers
I purchased this book for my 11 year old daughter as she is a huge fan of the women's National team. A few chapters in she told me that she felt uncomfortable with some of the content, so I asked her to stop reading until I had a chance to read it myself. While the book is very engaging and Abby has many life lessons to share, I believe the content in this book is not appropriate for young readers. I would rate this book for mature audiences. ... show more

  • Not your typical athlete's memoir, a brave autopsy of the cost of deeply rooted insecurity
Often Abby Wambach's accomplishments on the soccer pitch were astonishing: the record number of goals, two Olympic gold medals, her huge role in building interest in women's professional soccer in the U.S. But in this book she courageously reveals the emotional pain she experienced as her fame grew. Scarred by her youthful traumas over being "different" at a time when being a lesbian was hugely unacceptable in her affluent, conservative, Catholic surroundings, she parlayed her athletic talent into an inspiring success story on the world stage. But privately she drowned the pain of rejection, self-doubt, and grisly injuries with vodka and pain pills as her career and, soon after, her marriage ended. More inspiring than her unequalled on-field accomplisments, however, is the less visible story of the significant impact of her advocacy for equal pay and opportunitied for women, plus protection for abused women and children. Abby Wambach's story inspires on many levels. ... show more

  • irresponsible behavior and bad language abound
I imagine it took courage to write and release this book. As a soccer fan--and player for over 30 years--I would not have guessed that she suffered from addiction. Clearly, many professional athletes and famous people are plagued by similar afflictions, so I'm not sure why I was surprised to read how extreme the problems became. She is a bit narcissistic--maybe all famous people are. She certainly has an opportunity to contribute to the world of soccer differently in retirement and it would be interesting to read a follow up book if she does. BE WARNED: For those of you with daughters who play soccer, I would suggest you read the book FIRST. Sex, drugs, alcohol, irresponsible behavior and bad language abound. Its not offensive in any way-I think it was rather authentically portrayed--but its certainly not appropriate for my 10 year old. My daughter and I will see Abby at a speaking event and book signing--I'm glad I read the book ahead of time and will save it until my daughter is a bit older. It does have some good messages along with the brutal honesty. ... show more
