Description

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER"Lucid and wrenching...Forward puts [Wambach's] achievement in context with painful and beautiful candor." —NPR"Forward is the powerful story of an athlete who has inspired girls all over the world to believe in themselves." —Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook COO, New York Times Bestselling author of Lean In “This is the best memoir I’ve read by an athlete since Andre Agassi’s Open.” —Adam Grant, Wharton professor and New York Times bestselling author of Originals and Give and TakeAbby Wambach has always pushed the limits of what is possible. At age seven she was put on the boys’ soccer team. At age thirty-five she would become the highest goal scorer—male or female—in the history of soccer, capturing the nation’s heart with her team’s 2015 World Cup Championship. Called an inspiration and “badass” by President Obama, Abby has become a fierce advocate for women’s rights and equal opportunity, pushing to translate the success of her team to the real world. As she reveals in this searching memoir, Abby’s professional success often masked her inner struggle to reconcile the various parts of herself: ferocious competitor, daughter, leader, wife. With stunning candor, Abby shares her inspiring and often brutal journey from girl in Rochester, New York, to world-class athlete. Far more than a sports memoir, Forward is gripping tale of resilience and redemption—and a reminder that heroism is, above all, about embracing life’s challenges with fearlessness and heart. • GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I did not know what to expect when I ordered this book. I know I love soccer, love Abby Wambach and her air of IDGAF, and her wild play for so many years. I also figured that would have to add up to a great story - how did she get there? what was the US Women's locker room like? I did not know she played for the Gators (boo! Go Seminoles!) The best parts of the book were the open and frank very introspective insights into her life. It read like a novel, chock full of raw emotion, sports action, and team camaraderie. Love the writing style, felt like it was directed at me, a nearly middle-aged straight white guy who likes to stand out from normal without piercings, hi-glo hair, or ostentatious shows to claim my presence. Thanks for that. The biggest lesson I gained from the book is that we all make mistakes, and we have to learn how to adapt and improve ourselves from them. If I were still a teacher (speaking of past mistakes), I would d\grade it a 9/10. An A-. Excellent for a first publication. I look forward to more because there is definitely not an ending to this memoir. ... show more

  • The perfect story for those of us who know we'll never be perfect(but strive to be more so)
This book is written by a champion. Wambach is the best forward we've had since(perhaps even including) Mia Hamm. But that's not the message of this fine memoir. This is a story about an impressive, but imperfect, human being, who has lived a life trying hard to earn love from herself and others. Among her successes and failures, her happy times, and her low points, Abby explains her realization that love is not something one has to earn. Though hard work and dreams are key precious, self-love is not just for the best among us. It is our birthright. Your failures and shortcomings do not define you. We are all imperfect. What matters is that we learn from our mistakes, strive to be better, and love ourselves(and others) along the way. No book explains this better than Forward. ... show more

  • a good read
Probably a 3.75, but gave it 4 for the honesty. I enjoyed Abby as a player, and my own kiddo’s tenacity in her soccer games reminds me of Abby. I’m a gator, and I love that connection. But the honesty about her life was refreshing - I don’t know what I was expecting, but this book wasn’t it, but in a good way. I’m glad I read it. ... show more

  • More of a memoir on overcoming addiction than soccer
Not what I was expecting but so much better. Yes, Abby recounts how she became a great soccer player but that is a background story to how she has overcome feelings of being unloved and unlovable and the resulting addiction. Her voice is authentic and brave revealing emotional lows that we would never have guessed behind her soccer triumphs. It’s a fast and easy read and I would recommend for 15+ as it does deal with sexual experiences, drugs, and alcohol. The sexual experiences are coming of age stories and are doubly valuable for illustrating how Abby navigated owning her lesbian identity. ... show more

  • Touching and honest
This book is an honest portrayal of winning, losing, and everything in between. Abby was such a phenomenal athlete yet she struggled with her own self love. She is someone who puts it all on the table yet takes responsibility for her actions. A true hero in my mind. I appreciate her candid outlook and I think she is courageous for being so real. Amazing story and an even more amazing person. Loved this book!! ... show more

  • Honest and raw - not what I expected
As a soccer player myself, I expected to read this book and become inspired and encouraged, but instead was completely caught off guard by the life of Abby. I just had no idea, so I had to soak it all in. Kudos to her for being so open about her journey, and I hope she continues to flourish in the post soccer era of her life ... show more

  • Pulled me right in
I don't watch/play soccer, so I was worried I would get bogged down in replays of the games, bored with rules I don't know etc. But this was truly a beautiful memoir, and soccer was a piece, and that was the point. A human told her story and I was captivated immediately, along on this roller coaster, and barely put it down before finishing. Inspiring but in a humanizing way. Celebrities and other stars are humans with depth and nuance like anyone else. And it's good to know that confidence is not continuous, sometimes none of us know what the hell we are doing, but we are doing it anyway. ... show more

  • Fascinating Story about a Soccer Player on the Edge
I have never played team sports. I don't watch team sports. I don't even watch the Olympics because I choose to forego TV. So I didn't know anything about Abby Wambach until I opened this book. If a soccer superstar can write well enough to interest a woman with no sports background whatsoever, she has done her job. Although the details of the games she played didn't interest me as much as the details of her personal life, they weren't a total loss for me. She was able to convince me that soccer is a complicated game as well as a dangerous game! I learned a lot. Her personal stories of her love life (she is homosexual although she had one male in her life) and her substance-abuse issues were interesting to me. Just as so many superstars in this world lose their selves somewhat while pursuing their dreams (think Elvis Presley), Abby Wambach's love-hate relationship with soccer complicates her personal life. Now that she has retired from soccer, she is busy creating a new life for herself while recovering from alcoholism and drug addiction. I wish her the best in her new life. ... show more
