Wow. What a difference flats make. I'm a middle aged mountain biker with far more enthusiasm than skill. Used to race back when the kids were small, and have been on clipless offroad for over 25 years. A month ago on a technical uphill I slow-rolled when I couldn't unclip. I was inches away from shoulder surgery from a broken scapula (the pointy rock did a number on the rest of my shoulder). Can't do this at my age. Took the plunge after reading the reviews. Verdict? I love these. Amazing grip, no impact on climbing or putting power to the pedal throughout my normal range of motion. But when you drop your saddle and put weight on these, they grip like. . .well, like stealth rubber on flat pedals with pins. Which is to say amazing. I'm cleaning sections I dared not ride before because I can bail out. Had to adjust my saddle to ride a little lower but that is about it. What don't I like? I was a terrible bunnyhopper, and these did me no favors. Manuals take a bit more finesse (to me at least). And you have to be mindful when you slam your foot on the pedal because these don't slide around. To reposition you need to lift the foot - that is how well they grip. Can't wait to go back to my nemesis climb to either clean it, or walk it, but not crash. Sizing is a little tight - more like a road cycling shoe really. Size 1/2 up if you like roomy toes. How much did I like them? Got my wife a pair (along with some nice flats with pins- check out a separate review). She had a smile at minute one of the ride. The shoes took her from "avid roadie but timid MTB rider on clipless" to "hey, let me try THAT again!". We ride MTB together a lot more now - because of these shoes!! - and that is worth any price. FWIW, I'm getting the winter version to survive the next 3 months on my fatbike. Nuff said. If you're on the fence, just pull the trigger. You will not be disappointed. ... show more

The shoes run much smaller than indicated and didn't fit me at all, despite all my other shoes of the same size fitting fine. The right shoe had exposed plastic in the toe box that would irritate my big toe even if the shoes fit correctly. To top it all off, the seller charged a 15% restocking fee PLUS return shipping (that was supposed to be cost-free according to Amazon's return page). ... show more

I've long debated getting a pair having tried to make due with athletic shoes or my clipless (SPD) setup which I do not like at all for technical terrain. The Five Ten Freeriders are in my opinion as good as most claim. Having a background in BMX into my 20s I was no stranger to a skate style shoe for flat pedals and despite pushing 50 still like the cool look but the likes of Vans or DC shoes just didn't perform well for mtn. biking. My feet are older now lol and need some support and comfort. The Freeriders are comfortable, supportive is questionable unless changing the insole for better arch support but still pretty good. The comments on stiffness some mention may be their experience but in mine I do get some flex and can feel the pedal per say so after a long, technical ride my feet are a little fatigued at the end of the day but overall they're still far stiffer than athletic shoes. The grip is superb but not so much as to be unable to reposition the foot. Hitting mild jumps or a rocky, rooty downhill section is no longer a concern over my feet sliding or bouncing off the pedal. Some mentioned the ridiculous long fat laces, yeah I agree and for a short while shortened them and simply heat shrink tubed the cut end in a pinch. The fat laces look of some skate shoes didn't appeal to me either. I've since switched to the Expand (elastic laces) as I really like the fit of them having the elastic lock laces on my hikers/trail runners. Making this switch made me love the shoes even more given they hold the shoe snug but still expand as your feet swell after a long day to alleviate hot or sore spots from tight laces and best of all no laces to tuck or dangling to catch the chainring or branches/brush on the trail. They're quality made shoes and I've no doubt they will hold up well (a little steep in price though so they better hold up well). All in all I'm sold. I like and find them comfortable enough I even where them to the office time to time (casual environment working on a Univeristy campus). ... show more

To be honest, I’m irritated!” And I’m not one to complain much about this type of stuff but... Decent product but too small and arrived 3 days late. Needs returned or exchanged. It appears an exchange is not an option. The shoes need to be returned for a refund. In order to return them, I’m getting hit back for a return fee of somewhere between $5-6. Wait, what? It’s costing me $5-6 to try on a pair of shoes? That’s annoying, to say the least. So, it’s easy to say, I won’t be buying these again. Buyers beware if they don’t fit...it’ll cost ya!     • If you've been using non-dedicated shoes for flat pedal riding, these can definitely up your game.
These shoes were my first pair of actual bike shoes for mountainbiking with flat pedals. I'd ridden with clip-ins for 20 some years prior to switching to flats after getting my e-bike. I looked at and read lots of reviews before deciding on this particular brand and style. This shoe is well-made, comfortable, and sticks to the pedals with the precise amount of tenacity necessary. The price is nominal for this type of shoe, and reviewers often noted they could get 3-4 years of service from them. As I'm older, and likely not as tough on equipment as most of the reviwers I looked at, I expect these shoes will last me longer than that. Also, I got the tan color as it doesn't show the dirt I collect on them while riding. Definitely recommend these shoes. ... show more
