  • Well worth the wait...
Platform For Display: PlayStation 5 Edition: Standard
I really appreciate that FF7R isn't overly bogged down with trying to be a note-for-note remake of the original game. I say that as someone who still owns their original copy of the game for the PS1 and would not part with it despite no longer owning a PS1 to play it on. I love the new story elements and can't wait for it to continue. The combat is fun, although I sometimes longed for the older style, I can't dispute that the new style got my heart pumping and won me over before the end. The music is so good that I had to buy the soundtrack. Between the high dose of memberberries from familiar tracks to the shifting themes of the battle music (not to mention those boss fights... one word: J-E-N-O-V-A) I loved nearly all of it. Above all, the characters being fully voiced and well animated (along with everything else) made this a game I'd rank alongside Witcher 3. Some people may not like meandering around the slums with Aerith but I loved every minute of it. But I say that as someone who played the original game when I was younger, so I have an attachment to that character in particular that made every moment mean something more. I would not suggest that someone new to the story of FF7 would get the same thing out of the story of those character interactions. I would, however, suggest that anyone into story-driven RPGs give it a shot and hope that you enjoy it as much as I did. In the end, FF7R was the first game I had to own and play on the PS5 (I waited for it to come out on PC and lucked out on getting a PS5 mere weeks before it was released on PC - go figure) and in another 25 years, I may not have the PS5 but I'll still have my copy of FF7R for it. ... show more

  • FF7,let me count the ways I love you lol.
Platform For Display: PlayStation 5 Edition: Standard
First off, beautiful, beautiful graphics. Great soundtrack, cut scenes are like watching an actual movie. I felt super immersed. I mean there is no reason not to play it if you are a FF7 fan. However, I do understand that it could be polarizing for many FF7 purists/fans. Some things have been changed and modified from the original. Some people will like it, some will hate it. There are also new characters. (Will not go into it, bc spoilers.) Yuffie was missing in the first remake version. Now we have Yuffie. I played through both, still had a great time. -- While being a self proclaimed FF7 purist, I did have a few issues with things story wise, but this is a remake. So I'm cool with it and am interested to see where this is all going to go. However, there are several scenes I really missed and wished to see remade. There was a lot that I felt could've been done when going into the Slums. Wish there was more to do. Sometimes I kinda felt very linear when playing, you can't go anywhere you want. Will be turned back. A character will say something like, "Not there, dummy." And so on. So that area will be closed off, a minor annoyance for me. But I understand.. -- The summon cut scenes were great though! But, I really miss riding Chocobo's. (Sure that's coming up in part 2, hopefully). I mean, this game is massive. So I understand how some things will be changed or cut for budget reasons etc. But, still sad to know those things were omitted and will never see these scenes from beyond their polygon forms. -- Just my issue, but I still want to feel as if I'm playing the original. I don't have that feeling anymore, but am still glad to have something. Overall, it's an enjoyable and fun experience, the game is beautiful. Just kinda miss the old one. So I look at this as an alternate universe aside from the original. Expect things to be different! My only gripe is, I wish the whole game was released and not into bits and pieces. Back then, you had three discs and that was pretty much that. Wish it was still that way, but never going to happen. So all in all, a nice experience not quite like the original. I believe that 90's Squaresoft was lightening in a bottle, quite literally. However this is now and I am really looking forward to the next one. // DLC is a code!! Not on disc. The Yuffie part is not a lengthy marathon of gameplay,a few hours at most. But it does deliver, loved the soundtrack for it. ... show more

  • Not perfect, but still an overall great game
Platform For Display: PlayStation 5 Edition: Standard
Already have a copy on PC, but then I was able to snag a PS5 and had to get it to expand my library. It's a really great game. Story-wise, throw whatever you knew about the original PSX FFVII out the window (okay, maybe not all of it) because this one is its own, so please do not let that discourage you from enjoying the game. The characters also match their FFVII: AC counterparts in attitude, so there is consistency if you suddenly feel like watching the film after playing the game. Battle wise, it's an action RPG similar to KH and FFXV. You will want to learn when to switch characters. Don't just rely on Cloud to take on everyone. Will it make battles a little bit more hectic than it already is? Sure, but it'll make life easier for you. Especially when challenging hard mode. There are also a number of side quests to make the game feel non-linear, if only for a while. The game can be finished in about 28-30 hours, skipping cutscenes and all the text. Enemies don't get staggered after attacking them with just a few hits. Players need to first put them into a 'pressured' state, keep using actions that adds pressure, then will ultimately be staggered. Once staggered, enemies are vulnerable and take 160% additional damage from actions. This can be increased in excess of 300% once you get a hang of things, but enemies don't normally stay in that state too long. Larger enemies and bosses are even harder to presssure, so plan your actions wisely. Coming from PC, it's currently not possible to import and convert your previous saves to the PS5. There is an option to import your PS4 save > PS5 though. One thing I also miss from the PC version are the mods. ... show more
