Description

In late-'50s Pittsburgh, middle-aged trashman and one-time Negro Leaguer Troy Maxson (Denzel Washington) remained bitter that he never got his shot... and his lingering resentments might drive a wedge between him and the teenage son (Jovan Adepo) with a legitimate shot at a football scholarship. Washington directs and reprises his Tony-winning performance; August Wilson adapted his Pulitzer Prize-winning play for the screen. Viola Davis, Mykelti Williamson, Russell Hornsby, Saniyya Sidney also star.

  • Awesome movie
I watched this movie when it was originally released. And although it is outstanding, I didn't like it. I thought there was waaaay too much dialog and that it dragged on. Just watched it again and wow just wow. I still think Troy is a mean man. But boy do I get him. He was all about surviving for himself and his family. Given his childhood he wasn't taught any better. But he did the best he knew how and was a better parent then his. His drive, determination, even his wisdom reminds me of the hard working fathers of the 60s and 70s who were denied many opportunities but never threw in the towel and walked away or buried themselves in alcohol 24/7. My dad was a very kind man, but I see so much of him on Troy's character. Thank You Denzel for bringing this story to the big screen.. ... show more

  • A wonderful movie for everyone
I show this film to my literature students every spring. It's a great example of complex characters who change - or don't - in very realistic ways and in a very realistic environment. Denzel Washington is absolutely magnificent.

  • Acting was over the top
I love Denzel Washington and every movie I have seen up to Fences. While he is in my opinion one of the best actors in the business today. I must admit his acting was obnoxious and over the top in Fences. I felt horrible watching the movie. I almost turned it off several times. However I stayed the course and finished it to the end. The ending greatly helps the movie. I would give the move a 5 out of 10 because of the other actors. Maybe Denzel was supposed to be that horrible in the movie. It just threw me for a loop. Watch it and make up your own mind. ... show more

  • POWERFUL
This movie will draw you in and make you work at understanding all of the characters. A job well done by the director and all of the actors. Without giving anything away the scene with Viola Davis in a state of upset was riveting!

  • Bitterness Has A Face...
Ah, Denzel Washington and Viola Davis. They played off of each other greatly. This movie transports you back to this time and place quickly without the backdrop being drab, still or dull. The neighborhood is very much alive. The kids playing in the streets, passersby along the side of the house as Troy and Bono take several swigs of liquor in the backyard. Troy Maxon is a bitter curmudgeon that once had big dreams of playing professional baseball. And is haunted by said dreams as well as his feelings about his brother Gabriel's head injury from the war that has left him with the mind of a child. Troy comes from the cloth of a man being a man. Who owns up to his responsibilities and and has little to no time to show love, affection or compassion to his wife and sons. Rose Maxon beautifully portrayed by Davis is his committed and dutiful wife who has long accepted her husband for who and what he is. Things come to a head one day where Troy and Rose square off as ugly truths are revealed. This is a film not to pass up. It makes you think as your eyes are locked on each character. There's not much scenery, but the words make up for it. This film is chock full with reality. You might possibly see yourself or someone in your family. August Wilson dug deep for this one. Great story with words that hit harder than Troy Maxon's bat. ... show more
