I absolutely love these pencils and would definitely recommend them to anyone who has been using colored pencils for a while and wants to try something different. They have a harder lead than prismacolors and can be harder to blend since it takes more layers however they apply very smooth and beautifully. While prismacolors feel easier to use these polychromos look much better on paper in my opinion, than prismacolor. As someone whos been using prismacolor for years I really like and enjoy using the polychromos as well . I don't know if I would say prisma is better or worse but the polychromos feel more professional, and they seem to produce smoother looking blends. ... show more

I love these oil-based professional colored pencils. They glide on easily, have vibrant colors, and are easy to blend. The leads are long lasting. The applied color has good light-fastness. The set of sixty pencils gives you a good selection of colors, and with its superior blending capability, the color palette you can create is endless. Another bonus I find with the Faber Castel pencil line is that the colors are consistent across products. This means that the color names and pigments for the Polychromos oil pencils are the same as those for their Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils. The set, packaged in a metal tin, arrived in perfect shape. For those who are considering purchasing the wax-based Prismacolor Premier colored pencils, which cost less than the Polychromos, I'll provide a little comparison here, since I own both. There have been many complaints about product control with the Mexico-manufactured Prismacolors. Lead breakage is a problem, especially if you drop a pencil. This is because the lead is not glued to the wood. The barrels may be chipped or warped. The lead cores are sometimes off-center too. But in the German-manufactured Polychromos, quality control is excellent, the lead is attached firmly to the wood, and I have experienced no lead breakage or other anomalies. The Prismacolor pencils have softer leads than the Polychromos and wear down far faster. That being said, I enjoy using both brands of pencil. They both have bright colors, and they even blend together well. If I have to give any negative comment, it's that the Polychromos pencils (and the Prismacolors as well) have round barrels, so they roll around on a table easily. A hexagonal shape would have been better not only to control the roll but also to hold them more firmly. But that's such a minor complaint that it doesn't detract from my five-star rating. ... show more

I am no artist but I do love to all sorts of paper crafts. I got on the coloring book band wagon and have thoroughly enjoyed it. I purchased set after set of pencils starting with the basic Crayola brand type and finally arriving at Polychromos. Wow, if I had known better, I would have started with these exceptional pencils. When starting any new kinds of art, I research relentlessly. I love watching videos on YouTube so that I can become informed on techniques and products. I learned so much, and continue to learn. Most people were recommending Polychromos or Prismacolor. However, as much as people liked their Prismacolor they have a "defect" of sorts in that they break frequently. I never tried them but find that these Polychromos do not break......at all! They sharpen beautifully (I use a hand sharpener and electric and have great results with both). I have learned to lay down color in layers (see, I am not a trained artist) and this has been one of the best things I figured out. What amazing colors, fabulous shading and ease of use. I have some arthritis in my fingers and these pens have no drag at all making it comfortable for me to color for long periods of time. My only minor disappoint is the lack of some colors. I started with the 24 set put had no purples at all. I was ready to move up and settled on the 60 as I really did not "need" the 120. I have many more colors but still am lacking....this time the oranges. I went onto Dick Blick and immediately ordered single colors I feel are missing, i.e., flesh tones, etc. You won't be sorry ordering these. ... show more
